there's a skill called "gourmet", or something like that, where if you eat something, it benefits you for 20 real life minutes

also, while the game is pretty straightforward, make sure to read monster info in the compendium thing, because it can tell you their weakness/how to beat it, so you'll save yourself some time.

lastly, make sure to make as many of the portions, oils, etc., because as long as you have ingredients, you'll automatically replenish them whenever you rest.

you're welcome.

like I said, the game is pretty straightforward, and wants you to enjoy as much of it as you can, but there are some smaller things you might end up missing.

I've noticed after the first area, there are some questionmarks that are way too tough for your level. So don't feel bad if you can't clear the entire map.

Play on the hardest difficulty. Loot everything. Take your time doing quests, there are a few where you have to really keep your eyes and ears open for clues.

Oh also the Witcher games aren't Canon to the books (the TV series is an adaptation of the books) but they do continue the story from where the books end. You won't be totally lost jumping in to 3, it was advertised as an entry into the series, but there are some important things explained in the first two that you might need to read up on.

I mean it's usefulness drops off by mid game when you have more healing potions, tons of food items in general, and are better at playing. So it could he a point towards a more useful skill.

But of course, you can hit midgame and just reset all your skills anyway so you might as well take it and then get rid of it when it isn't useful anymore.

That's my biggest tip, BTW. Don't worry about playing optimally for character builds. Mess around see what combat style/armor style works best for you. Once you get to Novigrad you can reset your skills and then optimize around what you have found most fun by that point.

Also don't get too attached to any particular armor or weapons as you'll get a ton of them. Eventually Witcher gear will start to outclass all other gear anyway. I really would waste resources/money crafting any gear that isn't Witcher gear. Same with buying gear.

Oh that is a food point. Witcher 3 is the first game of the series to really lean on the books. You don't need to read them and and game does a good job of filling in the relevant backstory, but it will absolutely spoil a few major things from the book/TV series if that matters to you.

Probably because it makes the game too easy and on that note play on the second highest difficulty at the least unless you just want to roflstomp everything

Hoard everything. Dismantle pretty much anything labelled as junk into parts for gear.

Play Gwent. Seriously, play gwent. At first it will seem kind of sucky and you'll feel it's a useless distraction from the main game but it has real game consequences to losing and also you will eventually learn that gwent is almost more fun than the actual game

Isn't dismantling gonna cost me a lot of money? Also Gwent was so boring, is there a cheese strat or something I can do to just reap the benefit?

  • Buy saddlebags to carry more
  • Buy repair kits instead of getting gouged by blacksmiths' repair prices
  • Random chests around the world can give you recipes. Some are hidden; some are underwater.
  • In Gwent, the Nilfgaardian deck is great for hand advantage thanks to all its spies
  • Pay attention to quest XP recommendations. Going too high over them makes the XP gains trash.

Northern deck is good, but vulnerable since so much of it relies on siege cards. Nilfgaardian deck is more varied and has more spies. It's pretty much easy mode.

Fuck I could be forgetting now, it's been a while, but I seemed to remember I dismantled all junk because it's cheap to do so, and sold all weapons and armour.

Gwent oddly becomes really fun once you start collecting the big cards. Like you become a gwent master and go around flouncing all the town.

You don't have to play it, it's just a few cutscenes and stuff. Personally I hate the idea of geralt losing a game of cards and having some smug asshole gloat about it in the cutscene.

Some merchants also sometimes sells cards, but you have to play to win the best ones.

Yeah I've understood that the best cards are rewards of various Gwent quest lines but right now I just feel like my deck is too weak to even beat those stupid quests. And I figured, merchants sell like 4-5 cards max. If I want to, say, build a whole Nilfgaardian deck out of nothing, do I just have to keep fighting the same merchant over and over until he drops his whole deck?

You only get a card the first time you defeat someone. After that point, they just give you random crafting materials or something.

Most times, the card you get is random, though, so you can save before you play them and just save scum until you get good cards. That might make the process of assembling a good deck faster.

Yeah, a common Gwent strategy is to force someone to use as many cards as possible round 1, knowing you'll lose it but sweep the next two rounds. Or blow a bunch of spy cards round 1 so you have a bunch of cards for the next two rounds.

Certain cards, mostly in the Northern Realms or Nilfgard decks, when played get played on the opponents side and add to their score, but allow you to draw two more cards. In most cases the benefit of two more cards offsets whatever points you might have given the opponent, especially if you are just gonna throw round 1 anyway.

Spy cards are cards you can play that get added to your opponent's strength, but allow you to draw 2 cards into your hand. They're important because they allow you to get and maintain hand advantage.

As an example, in the Northern deck you begin the game with, Prince Stennis is a spy card

Just remember that spies go into the opponent's graveyard after a round ends or they're destroyed. This means they can play your own spies against you and get free cards in the next round, which kinda sucks. Nilfgaard has a ruler trait (???) that lets you play a card from the opponent's graveyard, so reusing your own spies is why I always pick that over Northern Realms.

I just started to get the hang of this card game thing now. Feels like as long as I get a good hand with my current Northern deck, I'll be fine. But I'm curious to actually try to set up a monster or scoia'tael deck once I have enough cards. I really dig that ability that lets them summon all their copies.

Best regular quest for me so far was probably the whole Rat Tower thing. That had me so scared that I went along with the ghost's wishes even though I knew it was evil because I didn't dare fight it.

If you're getting to get into Gwent though, check every vendor for cards. A lot of good ones are sold there. If you want every card you'll need to track them down eventually.
