Akira Toriyama clearly gives less of a crap than ever. How do you have all the time/resources in the world to carefully craft a story, only to somehow produce something with even more plot holes, less creativity, weak stakes, etc.? At least when he wrote Z, he was improvising all the time on a super tight schedule lol

Isn't that what all manga/anime artists do? Hayao Miyazaki famously relies on an animation team to do the majority of the actual animation.

Toriyama used to do the majority of work himself. He has an extremely distinct art style.

Dragon Ball may very well be the greatest example of nostalgia and brand familiarity keeping a series afloat. There's no way the current series would have been successful as a new and original idea.

On what basis should DB not be expected to have at least decent writing? No one's saying it has to be masterful -- just that it shouldn't be shite.

I don't expect Saturday morning kids shows to have great writing honestly. It's a plus if they do but I don't expect it to be a must-have.

Apparently, even one of Toriyama's editors recently called the series a hollow piece of work that offers nothing of substance. He was shockingly honest about viewing DB as just a product meant to print paper lol

I love Dragonball, but it has long outlived it's relevance.

Toriyama is a smart business man. If I made a series I don't give a shit about anymore, I absolutely would sell its soul to the devil to get that $$$$.

With that said, I'm glad he is going with the lighter tone for Dragon Ball Super but what ends up happening is that there's just no tension anymore in the series. It definately out lived it relevancy, but at least it's not Simpson bad.

From what I hear about Akira Toriyama, he comes off by someone who does whatever his boss tells him to do.

Could have ended after the

1. Pilaf Saga. Basic journey.
2. Piccolo Saga. Goku is the strongest person on Earth. Implied to succeed Kami.
3. Frieza Saga. Goku became the strongest person in the universe. Died fighting on an exploding planet.
4. Cell Saga. Gohan surpasses Goku, most of their friends, and their strongest enemies combined.
5. Buu Saga. Goku returns from the dead and helps defeat a Godkiller.
6. Shadow Dragons Saga. Goku and Shenron leave for 100 years. The reappearance of Shenron is accompanied by the reappearance of Son Goku.
7. Dragon Ball Online. Goku and Vegeta in their old age fight one last battle in an uninhabited section of the universe.

Dragon Ball Super should have taken place in one of two eras.

1. After End of Z. Goku still misses Bulma's birthday party due to training Uub. Beerus still crashes the party looking for SSJG. Nothing really has to change.
2. After GT, post-100 year time skip. Beerus appears before Goku Jr and Vegeta Jr inquiring about SSJG. The closest they can think of is Goku, but he's dead so they wish Shenron will help. The rest goes down just as BoG except with mostly new characters.

I just view all forms of Dragon Ball as different universes. Most simple categorization is

1. Original manga run
2. Original anime run including filler, films, OVA, and GT
3. Anything from previous works that contradict the timeline as well as other media like licensed games and Dragon Ball Super

I was going to change to died avenging his home planet, but I thought Goku didn't care about saiyans. He was fighting for his friends fam.

Goku was unnecessary after the Frieza fight. Kill him on Namek for good and the story has more merit.

I have a lot of nostalgia for Dragon Ball, but lets be real: the series in general aint that great. The storytelling is clumsy and riddled with plot holes/inconsistencies/retcons, and most of the characters are just depressing wastes of potential. The action is exciting at times, but not nearly enough to ignore the shortcomings. Most of us like Dragon Ball because we have a soft spot for it, from growing up with it. Theres comfort in the familiar.
