Nicholson had played crazy before, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and The Shinning. Ledger did something completely out of character and it was so well done, he nailed it. I just love all of Jacks craziness. And his over exaggerated tools of destruction were great. Not real world, which is what TDK was going for and I appreciate that. His hand buzzer fire starter, boxing glove projectile, his final parade!!!

Hamill has done the best non live action Joker IMO. Romero was before my time and while I got to enjoy his performance, it was just out of my time. Adam West wasnt MY BATMAN, so Im ignorantly bias.

I like Nicholson better. He's more like the classic Joker with the crazy purple suit and gadgets and gimmicks and such that I like better. I don't mind his gangster backstory either. I prefer it to say him being a failed comedian or something like that. I don't feel like it's just Jack Nicholson being Jack Nicholson. Even if it was, I'd be fine with it because Jack is awesome.

The thing that gets me is that it took four decades to give the Joker a name: Jack Napier. It was a reminder that Jack Nicholson was the Joker, a tribute to the recently deceased Alan "Alfred" Napier, and a play on the word Jackanape. The name was reaffirmed in The Animated Series in the Batman on Trial episode where Batman's lawyer spoke the aliases of Batman's foes.

Then they did away with it.

The recent movie completely gives the Joker a new name: Arthur Fleck. A name which doesn't even have any meaning now since Affleck is no longer Batman.

It's kinda cool, kinda cheap, that Joker doesn't have an origin.

But it's crazy they were able to get to such a point where they could consistently defend a lack of origin.
