Are you surprised the new pic of Trudeau in blackface didn't hurt him again with voters this time before the election?

49 y/o Justin Trudeau beamed on stage as his Liberal Party survived Canada's snap election but with virtually the same amount of seats if not 3-5 seats more than the last election but still short of a majority as he will need to rely on the NDP once again, to pass his agenda.

Erin O'Toole's Conservative party may have lost because of vote splitting with the CPP but the final weeks of his campaign that was dogged by Alberta's Premier Jason Kenney who has been lambasted for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic that has put the healthcare system in shambles and at capacity with patients piling up with the disease and is now forced to place vaccine passports and asking Trudeau and other provinces for help of which he did not want to do. O'Toole tried everything to separate from his relation but the clip of him praising Kenney for reopening the province and getting rid of all masks and restrictions was a huge mistake.

In a last ditch attempt by the Conservatives, just one day before voting day, Trudeau's blackface scandal returned to the voters when a new picture of him in blackface and a turban at a Arabia themed party in 2001 returned to the headlines to have voters remember of his racist past failed to materialize. The first pictures of him in blackface occurred in the 2019 campaign as well but voters did not punish him as harshly and the Liberals returned to power in 2019 with 155 seats.

At the start of the campaign, it was seemingly obvious that Erin O'Toole was going to be the next Prime Minister of Canada but his pivot to the middle and social liberal stance turned off voters and his future as leader will now be in question.

The results suggest little change will happen as they will continue to spend on social issues that the NDP has been calling for including pharmacare and childcare racking and conservatives will continue to call it a huge debt that Generation Z will pay for

Are you surprised the blackface scandal didn't hurt Trudeau again this time?

He already apologized and voters already forgave him for it. Who was actually expecting a second round of the same attack to work this time?

...he does a LOT of blackface. Like a suspiciously high amount. An even once is a little questionable, but you can say, "Oh, well, it was just once..." but... jfc.

Despite people online reacting impulsively, I think most people have enough common sense to know that there is a big difference between someone making themselves look darkskinned as a costume that isnt trying to be poor taste or they are doing an impersonation of a specific individual, and people who do it in bad faith to mock and perpetuate negative stereotypes against ethnic groups.

How exactly does one do this in good taste?

by just acting like themself or the specific character they are dressed as, not in a stereotypical manner

for example, in my personal opinion, I dont think thered be anything wrong with a kid admiring black panther and wanting to look like Tchalla for halloween and run around saying Wakanda forever or whatever

I also dont think stuff like Jimmy Kimmels old impression of Carl Malone is bad either

I'm gonna be the Prime Minister! My mom told me I was an 'african medicine man'. no clue what the hell she was on; I felt uncomfortable and thought her trying to spraypaint the clown wig black to be embarrassing.

I totally black faced myself on Halloween back in like 2003, I wanted to be the color black. I had somehow never heard of blackface. Like charcoal black so thats what I did. I went to a party with my black friend who thought it was HILARIOUS. The other people at the party had all sorts of reactions and conversations were had.

All in all it was a pretty great party everyone got way too drunk and we played waterfalls

While that seems kinda fucked up, at least that was your mom doing it and you either didn't have much say or didn't know better. This was a grown adult man who should know better doing it.

There *might* be (and I can't think of any) a very few instances where changing your skin color to that of another race (where it's being done for the effect of race) for a costume might be acceptable, and neither example of one of them.

I will admit that he went really dark for an Aladdin type costume. I mean in all the depictions Ive ever seen of Arabian characters they have lighter skin tones. I guess part of that could be an issue with portrayals by western culture but really for an Aladdin costume I dont think a white person would need to color their skin at all.

I'd still say this was in poor taste, but the key difference is in how he reacted to it. When somebody who's done blackface in the past apologizes for it and generally acts in a manner that indicates they recognize it was wrong and they are more sensitive to the issue now, forgiving them is reasonable. When somebody who's done blackface in the past starts going on about their "right to free expression" and "snowflake cancel culture" and "fascist political correctness" without ever actually admitting it was in poor taste or apologizing for it, there's not much reason to forgive them for it.

I mean what do you expect when the majority of Canada is white?

Then again, I wonder how many minorities actually take offense to this or if its just whites upset on the behalf of them?

When the first photo surfaced, there were a number of minority-representing groups that officially condemned it. They were generally satisfied by his apology, though. Pretty much the only people that made a big deal out of it past the initial uproar were conservative-leaning folks that saw it as an opportunity to try to discredit him in the then-upcoming election (the vast majority of whom either have not cared or outright supported others in similar situations), which obviously didn't work very well.
