I don't think most other missing persons has a person of interest doe...most of dem just disappear without a trace while dey were out alone, at least from all I've read and heard about. Gabby had her bf with her and he came back alone without her, so i don't understand why people more upset with her case getting more attention den dey are upset with laundrie. It makes no sense tbh

Honestly? I think a lot of Americans dislike or outright hate white Americans (and probably white people from other countries despite never interacting with them). So whenever it seems white people are treated better or just different it has to become a race thing.

Americans care when a white girl goes missing. Americans care when a white girl is crying. The news of this woman's disappearance simply would not have gotten as big as it did if she was any other color because women of color go missing quite often and nobody cares.

Gabby had a lot of contributing factors that kept her in the news cycle...

* Tons of social media pics and video that the news could rotate.
* Video of a police encounter with her and her killer.
* A readily identifiable villain.
* A case that was unfolding on both sides of the country.
* A Columbo style mystery where you know who done it, the mystery is proving how they did it.

All of this. The story was the murder mystery not the disappearance.

There's always going to be stories that grab national attention for whatever reason while other similar stories do not. The whole Missing White Woman phenomenon is real and well-documented, but people act like there aren't dozens of other missing white women who also are not getting the national attention Gabby got.

I believe it's something worth talking about in our culture, I just think using a specific missing person/murder case to get on your soap box and talk about how nobody cares about PoC is the wrong way to do it.

Also to make it clear, people aren't mad at other people for caring about the case. They're mad about the media coverage, so I don't understand why people outside of media are getting personally offended. And they're not saying to cover her case less, they're saying why not give the same amount of coverage to the other cases as well.

These true crime stories are their own monster. This story is enticing af for that branch of the media.

You mean the shows where the premise was showing HOW the detectives figured it out, which doesn't apply to this case? Also, Monk wouldn't be considered a mystery show. It's a comedy by definition. And Columbo is a drama, not a mystery series. Want to try again?

Having never seen either of those, I can't comment.

I read those articles on CNN and there were something like 800 missing black/brown/native american women in the last few years in the entire state and none of them received the media attention that this case did.

Seems pretty reasonable to think about the underlying systemic issues with how we report on missing persons.

It's a also incredibly long and still going I think. At least the Japanese version is. They dubbed relatively few episodes in English.

This case really isn't a case of missing white woman syndrome.

This lady was a YouTuber and very heavily documented her experiences. Internet sleuths were the ones who made this a story and are responsible for it all going viral. Mainstream media jumped on the bandwagon after the story got big mostly to call it missing white woman syndrome.

It's a combination of Missing White Woman syndrome + social media cancer. If she wasn't young & pretty, she wouldn't have had as much of a social media presence in the first place and she wouldn't be as strong of a pull for a headline story.

Yeah the vast majority of people who go missing get no media attention. This includes white women. The vast majority of missing white women get no media attention.

It isn't every single missing white girl getting media attention. It is a very small percentage of missing white women who do.

the same media that spoon feeds controversy, hate and misinformation are the same ones who would complain about this to create, controversy, and vitriol yet do nothing about it.

that in turns makes individuals blame other people who have zero fucking say what missing person reports get attention.

so blame the media - not the people who are just consuming what is chosen to be broadcast.
