I'm gonna assume this is just FC and go 7/10.

Sets up everything well for the trilogy and certainly ends with some intrigue, but there's a whole lotta nothing happening for long stretches of this one.

I think if you want to combine them the sensible way to do it is by combining 1 and 2 while leaving 3 separate.

I never played Fire Emblem Fates but it also seems like something like what we did with that might also work here? I don't know. I don't think the scenarios are analogous but it seems like the same approach works regardless.

It is true that the first 2 games are basically the same story though and in fact were originally planned to be released as 1 game.

Okay. Taken as a whole, all three games together tell a 10/10 story.

However, FC on its own I'd give a 7. Amazing world building and characterization, but it can be quite boring at points.

I would just count it as the first game. They work as standalone games.

I'll give Trails FC an 8/10. Does a great job of world building and characterization, with a great twist at the end.

Yeah I agree they work as standalones; I was just saying I think there's arguments either way. Anyway assuming this is just FC (the first game) I'll give it a 9/10.

I don't quite think the newer games live up to the legacy, but really the storytelling in this series is head-and-shoulders above any other jrpgs I know of and probably any other genre as well. The characters change in compelling ways over the course of the series. The characters all have clear goals which shape how they interact with the party and the things they say. The worldbuilding is both detailed and relevant. Just great stuff all around. I'll probably save more specifics for whenever we rate the other 2 Sky games, but yeah.

Anyways, nominate Trails in the Sky SC and Trails in the Sky The 3rd, in case nobody has done that yet.

I might dock it for a bit of a slow start but once it gets going it goes. It manages to build up an incredible world while at the same time mostly having a self-contained main plot which is pretty impressive IMO.

9/10 for the first game. The series as a whole gets a 10. The first game by itself is good, but really shines when paired with the series and in particular the 2nd game.

I think the Tales games I've played handle specifically cast chemistry better than the Trails series on average (though the best Trails games are probably comparable). If we're talking about "characters" as a general thing though I think Trails is better, and the plot and worldbuilding side of things is definitely much better.

Trails FC is mostly world building and setting up the events for SC. It is solid but the pacing can be a little too slow which is usually the case with all first games in the Trails series.

The main story is good, the main cast is mostly good, Estelle is great, and the side cast is mostly great too. The main weaknesses are the villains everyone being hypnotized sucks and Richard's sexism as a motive is dumb and that I really don't like any of the Joshua x Estelle shipping in this game. I don't think the ending is that great either (though it leads to the awesome SC prologue, so that's something).

My Trails hot take is that I think Sky FC has both the best pacing and the best ending in the series. (at least up through Cold Steel 4 which is as far as I've played)

Sky FC ending easily one of the highlight scenes of the series for me.
