I'll just do a repost from another topic.

It was good. Not great, but good. I wish it was a miniseries though. There was too much there crammed into two hours. Overall the acting was good to spectacular. Lots of misdirections, which is fine. It did make me feel wanting more. My only problem is some continuity issues, because the timeline got fucked up, but eh.

Spoilers

I like how it was Junior who was behind Dickie's death. Junior always was a sensitive and petty person. I also like how Dickie being a junkie was actually a rumor started by Livia especially when those pills were for her.

I like how David Chase was old man DiMeo. Cool cameo.

I also don't like how they dropped major tv show spoilers at the very start. I think it's fair to say that this movie is going to be many people's first entry into the franchise and will watch the show afterwards, to have such a major thing spoiled right off the bat kind of ruins a major character

I cautiously recommended friends who wanted to get into Sopranos to watch this movie. They were /butthurt/ about the spoilers. What a braindead move this was.

David Chase was also a background character that Paulie tried to acknowledge at the Italian cafe

I have yet to watch the Sopranos tv show or this movie (I definitely plan to in the future), but its hard to believe that that a prequel movie is capable of spoiling the TV show? Is that for real??

Unfortunately yes, if you watch the first couple of minutes you will be spoiled with a massive plot point from the TV series.

Eh, it was alright. They kind of tried to cram too many plotlines in for a movie IMO. And honestly most of them never really went anywhere. At least no where interesting. The plot with Giuseppina felt like a giant nothing imo and the contention between Dickie and Harold never really crescendos into a satisfying climax.

Even the plotline of Dickie's relationship with Tony never really went anywhere.

The only interesting plot point of the whole film was that Junior was responsible for Dickie's death

so yeah, trying my best to be objective and not compare it to a show it was almost certainly never gonna live up to. It was just an alright, maybe slightly above average crime drama.

I didn't really think about that, but yeah, seems silly. Didn't even really add anything to the movie other than a familiar voice.

I just finished the movie. I enjoyed it, but one question I had was about Dickies killer.

I havent watched the Sopranos in years, but wasnt there an episode where Tony reveals to Christopher that a police officer shot his dad? And Chris breaks in his house after his retirement party to kill him? Am I remembering that correctly?

Yeah, but it was always left ambiguous whether or not tony was telling the truth. Even Chris expressed some doubts.

The movie never identified the shooter but it would make sense that Junior would contract someone outside of the Mafia, like a crooked cop, since Dickie was a made guy.

Finally watched it. Wasn't bad. Could have been a bit better, but eh. Should have indeed been a miniseries though. Or maybe there'll be another movie.
Livia and Tony were so good. The callbacks were fun.

I didn't know Silvio was older than Tony though, I thought they were childhood friends and thus roughly the same age. Also Dickie being killed on Juniors orders was pretty cool.
I would have liked to see more of Tony, but this wasn't his story, so yeah.

Timeline definitely got fucked up. He was said to be a part of young Tony's crew. He and Tony would be shooed away when they'd try to peak into the room where the executive game was held and was in on the card game robbery. It makes no sense that he's older and already established in the movie.

I liked how it was Junior that had Dickie killed too. Some people rag on it, forgetting that Junior always a sensitive and petty man who has killed over slights made against him.

Yeah it's weird. I'm imagining the robbery of Feech's game, with a young Tony and Jackie who were trying to come up in that world, and then also an already established Silvio, who didn't need to prove anything? It would only be a risk for him.
Doesn't make sense, but ok.

That's what I like about it so much. Dickie didn't got killed because he went to war, or because of the awful things he did like killing his father or goomar. He got killed because he laughed at Junior once when he slipped on some stairs. Such a Junior thing to have someone killed over.
Tony going into that life is Juniors fault. I liked that as well.
