The stakes just kept building, the threat level kept jumping, and new forms were being busted out left and right. I still remember thinking I cant stop watching this, its so good when the episode where Cell first revealed himself ended (him stepping out of the shadows to confront Piccolo). And the Japanese version of Gohans SSJ2 confrontation is my favorite moment in the entire anime. But going through everything again recently, I think the Freeza Saga is my favorite. There are so many moving parts occurring at the same time, alliances and betrayals, Vegeta is at his absolute peak as a character by acting as a wild card going against all sides, and it feels like a true climax for the series when Goku fights Freeza. It was the first time I didn't know what was going on in the series. All these different characters were one-upping each other and Cell just kept upping the ante. It was also the first time that it really seemed like they couldn't stop the bad guy and everyone in the world was going to die. I also had a nightmare about Cell.
