You have hundreds of gallons of water waiting for one pissed off cat to come and to flood your house

Massive back problems from sleeping on it

Extremely difficult to move once filled

But for some reason they were popular with boomers for decades

The equivalent of the tide pod challenge? I don't know about that. I would say playing with liquid mercury in science class or something, or smoking in hospitals.

In the 90s my mom had a water bed, she never had issues with it. We even had like 8 cats at once and never a pop, and most slept with her.

Drowning?
Maybe the super rare and unfortunate occurance, but generally no. It would flow to the floor, you would wake up, etc.

I had to patch mine growing up a couple times but never felt like it would be possible to drown.

As to the topic, no fucking chance. Inconvenience and the possibility of a bad back is not the same as eating a cleaning agent.

That wasn't from drowning, it was from being face down on the surface of the bed. Or at least that's how I read it.

X Challenges are popularized by social media that gets developed and invested in by boomers and millennials... today's kids are exposed to a global form of peer pressure never before seen in history, and now you boomers and millennials are making fun of those kids getting exploited by what your generation has profited from.

My parents had a waterbed like 40 years ago. Fast forward quite some time after they got divorced, and I was given the waterbed, since it was a cheaper option than buying a whole new bed. It was a neat novelty to have for a bit, but overall, the support isnt there, and it can get really warm at night, since underneath the covers, its essentially a rubber bladder that holds the water. And your own body heat will make that thing hot.

I never had one, but people that had them say they were very comfortable (more comfortable than memory foam even). I'd imagine, since they're designed for people to sleep on, that they don't pop easily.

Also if you fart while sitting on one it sounds crazy

I had one growing up. Was very comfortable, never broke, and the other thing everyone's overlooking is that most of them also could heat the water (and of course, water holds heat very well), but yeah, they're an absolute bitch to move.

I had a high end California King back in the early 90s. Waveless mattress. You can jump on the bed next to someone and theyd feel it, but no feelings of capsizing like with the earlier mattresses. Material is so thick no cat I ever met could puncture it.

You can also turn off the heat during the summer and your bed will keep you cool at night

Not even close.

Tide pod challenge risked your health directly and it was really really stupid. I don't think it was as big/happened frequently as the news coverage made a big deal out of it.

The only thing that can be really compared to tide pod is eating some other toxic consumable or something to do with lead or mercury exposure.

I had a water bed for years. It was great. The first time I started getting laid regularly was in a water bed and you can just sorta push your knees into the mattress and let it do some of the work and push her up (missionary anyways).

Definitely wouldn't trust my cat with one these days though.

Yeah. It's weird.

I don't have a waterbed anymore but in the summer I would lay on the bed with just a sheet and laying on the bed was like laying entirely on the cool side of the pillow.

I looked into them, actually pretty scratch proof espequally sine a lot of modern beds use insulate tunes inside the mattress part itself.

Couldn't convince the wife though unfortunately

Fun...
I had 1 that almost took up my whole bedroom floor. Thing was massive. It had 2 (4) dresser drawers on each of the long sides and a cubby entry underneath on all 4 sides. Had a huge headboard with mirror & glass cabinets.
