1) Check FAQs and message boards for strategies at beating at a lower level
2) Keep trying a few times to see if I can beat it
3) Possibly do some minor grinding for specific skills or something. Go to step 2 after doing this.
4) Lower difficulty if that's an option and I don't feel like grinding.

That's usually the order I go in. Almost never get to the point where I'd need to level grind for hours to beat a boss. Usually there's some way to get through without that. I do appreciate the option to lower the difficulty at least, even if I rarely do so. Last time I can remember lowering was for one of the Tales of Xillia games.

Last time I quit at the final boss was Disgaea, since he could one-shot all my characters and I did barely any damage to him. Most of my part was in the 20s and 30s for levels IIRC. Game was fairly challenging until then, but he was too much.

In the last world, I'm stuck on the first boss fights with both Sora and Riku. I breezed through most of the game, thought some of the random encounters throughout the last world were annoying, but then I entered those fights and found my health bar depleting before I could even do anything. So, it's podcast time.

I also level grinded in Yakuza: Like a Dragon for the Majima fight.

Yep

Unless the strategy is totally dependent on a skill I can't acquire until I'm at a level higher than my own, I don't pay that any attention.

Depends. While not quite an rpg, Remnant From The Ashes has a dumb final boss which is legitimately a dps check, really the only one in the game. Once I looked that up I just quit because there was no reason to grind for hours to beat a 15 minute fight.

If there is a strategy I'm missing that's not just a gear check I will continue until I win.

lmao, Disgaea was the exact game I was thinking of as I read this topic. That was such an absurd difficulty spike. I ended up grinding and then accidentally ground too much and kinda crushed him.

I vaguely remember that boss. I think I devised a strategy of cornering him with the only two characters that could actually survive one of his attacks, and then my other characters weren't targetted and could focus on keeping those two alive and maybe doing damage.

Another example is Arc the Lad 2. For that one, I remember being sorely underlevelled but there being some piece of equipment that could slowly generate MP and giving it to my healer. Slowly I would send characters to attack the boss and then die while keeping the healer out of range and reviving them. The fight took around 3-5 hours, but still faster to do it that way than grinding.

Look up low level clear guides. Like sometimes they may ask for things you don't have. But, usually one can compensate by the fact that their team is Lv60 instead of Lv6.

realistically i'd probably edit my save file to jack up my levels or whatever

if i can't, it'd depend on the game and whether guides have any tips other than 'grind'. if it really is a brain-dead rpg i'd either grind or take an extended break and see if i feel like coming back later

i've become less and less dedicated to playing games i don't enjoy

Depends mostly on how close I believed I was to the end. If it was truly the end of the game, I probably power through it. If it's anything shy of the 80% point, I might grind, I might seek out better strategies, or I might say F it and leave.

The last game that comes to mind is Super Mario RPG where I got to the final boss and stopped because I died like...once?
Was it even hard? I don't think people consider that final boss hard...maybe I just lost interest?
Who knows that was like 15 years ago
