Well, the Cranky ones are meant to be kind of older men who are serious and a bit confused by the actions of younger people. They're portrayed as cantankerous mature guys, but with a good heart once you get past their exterior. They strongly value those who are close to them.

The Lazy ones are, of course, lazy and love food -- but they are also a bit dumb, although more so in the sense of innocence and naivite. They also a pretty one track mind. Although, they are exceedingly friendly, and also quite easy to please.

Does that help?

It's been this way for all of the Animal Crossing games, from the very beginning -- not just the new one.

There are 8 (previously 6, I believe) personality types that are programmed as a different AI. A villager will have one of these 8 personalities -- it dictates their dialogue, when they are active, and their relationship with other villagers.

There are over 400 villagers, the idea that each and every one of them is unique is pretty far-fetched.

I seriously thought this was common knowledge.
Not that it's wrong to be unaware, but I'm just surprised. This is literally the only forum I've ever been on where people didn't already know about it. It's like Animal Crossing 101

Animal crossing is fun, but I never find it in me to play any game in the series for a year+, well except the first game. I always just get bored of the daily grind and waiting for a new month or event for new bugs/fish/etc

Shame too. I have really neat villagers in the new one (for the most part). Though I think I'm missing a good cranky one currently, and maybe another type...

It's hard not to notice. The first game let you have 15 villagers at a time and only had 6 personality types to pull from. You're inevitably going to get a few repeats. Similarly, the most recent one has 10 islander slots and 8 personalities. Each personality's dialogue still has plenty of variation, so you aren't seeing the same lines all the time from every character with the same personality, but if you're playing frequently at all, you'll see some repetition (to say nothing of how behaviourally similar characters with the same personality are, which is about what you'd expect).

Certainly, I'm not one for the "I want to carefully manipulate my island to have one of each personality" sort of approach, since that sort of gamification makes it feel like a much less organic experience than Animal Crossing ought to be (in my opinion), but it's hard to ignore that there's a finite number of personality archetypes that dictate villagers' dialogue.

Beautiful. It IS hard NOT to notice.

I mean, come on. How can you not notice that all Lazy villagers have the exact same laugh?
You're telling me you never ran into repeat dialogue between two separate villagers?

Competitive gameplay certainly ruins the fun.
But coming up with movesets and strategies just for a normal play-through is part of what makes it fun to own Pokemon. I also like to breed for rare moves and Pokeballs because it makes them feel more special. And shiny-hunting is an art!

You really think the devs would individually program a personality AI for over 400 characters? Each with their own unique mannerisms and set of 50+ unique dialogue options?

That's not far-fetched?
