One crew member has died and another was seriously injured after a prop gun misfired on the set of Alec Baldwins upcoming western movie Rust.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon (October 21) at around 1:50pm at the Bonanza Creek Ranch set in New Mexico.

A spokesperson for the film told Deadline right after the incident, There was an accident today on the New Mexico set of Rust involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks. Two crew members have been taken to the hospital and are receiving care. Production has been halted for the time being. The safety of our cast and crew remains our top priority.

It has since been confirmed that a 42-year-old female crew member has died and a 42-year-old male crew member remains in emergency care.

The Santa Fe County Sheriffs Department told Variety, The Santa Fe County sheriffs office confirms that two individuals were shot during filming of a scene on the set of the movie western Rust. According to investigators it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged. Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.

A source told Deadline that a principal castmember cocked a gun during a rehearsal, unaware that there were live rounds in it, hitting two people, a man and a woman. The man was hit in the shoulder, while the woman was airlifted to the hospital for stomach surgery.

Can we start with why the fuck were live rounds even there in the first place?

No it's not actually. In the Crow they used two types of ammo. One was essentially just a hollow casing. It can't be fired but otherwise looks exactly like a regular bullet.

The other ammo they used was a blank, that is the gunpowder cartridge but no actual bullet.

While changing the ammo in the gun, the bullet part of the fake bullet came off and got stuck in the gun. The blank was then loaded and essentially combined with the fake bullet to make a straight up real bullet.

Why don't they just make separate prop guns that literally cannot have this happen? I don't need amazingly realistic guns in my movies. Just one person dying isn't worth the gun "realism".

Interesting! I had heard different in the past that it was a second blank cartridge. Sorry for my incorrect info.

I also missed the part where it said it was possibly live ammo at the very end. Again sorry.

Dumbass Hollywood prop teams remove powder from cartridges then reseat the bullets to make blanks instead of just buying blanks.

On October 12, 1984, the cast and crew of Cover Up were filming the seventh episode of the series, "Golden Opportunity," on Stage 17 of the 20th Century Fox lot. One of the scenes filmed that day called for Hexum's character to load bullets into a .44 Magnum handgun, so he was provided with a functional gun and blanks. When the scene did not play as the director wanted it to in the master shot, there was a delay in filming. Hexum became restless and impatient during the delay and began playing around to lighten the mood. He had unloaded all but one (blank) round, spun it, andsimulating Russian roulettehe put the revolver to his right temple and pulled the trigger, apparently unaware of the danger.

Blanks use paper or plastic wadding to seal gunpowder into the cartridge, and this wadding is propelled from the barrel of the gun with enough force to cause injury if the weapon is fired within a few feet of the body, particularly a vulnerable spot, such as the temple or the eye. At a close enough range, the effect of the powder gases is a small explosion, so although the paper wadding in the blank that Hexum discharged did not penetrate his skull, there was enough blunt force trauma to shatter a quarter-sized piece of his skull and propel the pieces into his brain, causing massive hemorrhaging.

Hexum was rushed to Beverly Hills Medical Center, where he underwent five hours of surgery to repair his wounds. On October 18, aged 26, six days after the accident, Hexum was declared brain-dead.

The projectile is just a flimsy seal that doesn't do anything except keep the gunpowder in the cartridge. The Jon Hexon incident is a special case because the gun was literally pressed up against his head. Fire it from 10 feet away instead and nothing happens.

How's this...

It's simply a real gun, being used as a prop for a set. That's how a prop is fully functional. It could be anything, such as a working tv or microwave. In this case it's a gun, nothing super out of the norm given the setting.

That said, that's some irresponsible as hell behavior. The gun should have been disabled internally or never allowed near live rounds. Someone massively screwed up. This kind of crap is why they use CG in newer movies, as the guns themselves are actually rendered non-functioning, so not even a blank works.

That's very tragic, but I did find this section uplifting:

With his mother's permission, his body was flown to San Francisco on life support, where his heart was transplanted into a 36-year-old Las Vegas man at California Pacific Medical Center.[8] Hexum's kidneys and corneas were also donated: One cornea went to a 66-year-old man, the other to a young girl. One of the kidney recipients was a critically ill five-year-old boy, and the other was a 43-year-old grandmother of three who had waited eight years for a kidney. Skin that was donated was used to treat a 3-year-old boy with third-degree burns.[9]

That's six people whose lives were vastly improved, maybe even saved in a few cases, thanks to that young man.

Law as written the studio is responsible for her death most likely unless there's a weird gun law specifically for this scenario.

Weapons should never be fired towards an actor, use tv magic to make it look like it is.

Also all guns need ammo fired off into a water tank until empty cartridge and reloaded whenever bullets types are changed.

Should hopefully reduce these incidents.
