American encouraging independence is the biggest scam of the nation.

I live in a 900 sq ft 1bdr unit with 1.5 bath and a study. I pay $930 in rent ($970 after renewing).

Thats pretty good given what other states costs.

But Im looking at some of these more spacious and luxurious units around my area. A 3 bedroom with 2+ bathrooms cost between $1000-$1800 in rent.

Like, just rooming with ONE other person could literally cut my expenses down in half while also giving me MORE space than I do now. Wtf? I live alone. I dont even USE my living room unless guests come over.

What the fuck am I doing wasting so much money???

I lived with a shitty roommate when I was in my younger 20s, but even she has matured a lot to where I really dont think grown ass adults cant cohabitate.

Like, I legit am hitting a massive realization here.

If you dont know them or theyre immature, maybe.

Hiw tf could two people who barely do much anyway possible cause conflict?

I stay in my room as is. Whats the difference between living alone in a 1bdr vs living with someone who stays in their room 80% of the time in a 3 bedroom?

What? You cant walk around in your underwear? Is THAT truly whats important versus saving shitloads of money???

Because roommates are overrated af

By the time you're "done" with that sharing shit, you've already decided to tolerate paying an extra few hundred to live on your own rules.

knowing someone and living with them are two different beasts
might be your best friend at whose place you may have even slept at before is a person who doesn't put their dishes away or leaves clothes in random places, doesnt clean up after themselves etc.

I dont give a rats ass what they do with dishes so long as its rinsed off. If your room is messy with clothes, I also dont care.

Hey, make sure you rinse your plates.

DONE.

My previous roommate wasnt shitty because she left clothes in the dryer, or never put back the public vacuum, or never washed things out. I can tolerate that shit for an extra $200-$500 a month. Its when she couldnt pay a damn bill. Which is kid shit.

These units have 2.5 baths. You do get your own bathroom. Idgaf about my own kitchen. If I dont always have to cook, thats exclusively a good thing. I am actually MORE motivated to cook when Im not the only one eating.

You really have never lived with a roommate, huh

There's several factors that could come into play. Them taking your food/stuff without asking, them not cleaning after themselves and attracting pests, them not doing their share of taking out the garbage, so on and so forth

Bro, this is kid shit. I have lived a roommate. I used to be very adamantly against it.

But heres the deal. Rent prices are going up. A few years ago, finding a place for $700 a month was pretty easy.

But everything is $900+ now. Like, its like the pandemic INCREASED costs.

I refuse to be milked of my money just because I wont compromise.

Whats actually funny is that I am more than willing to do all the cleaning and chores.

Its what I do anyway living alone.

The only times I would be annoyed by roommates is if they frequently have company, smoke, or play music loudly without headphones.

Like, the bad roommate is as bad as a boogeyman as dating your coworker.

I live alone in a 2 bedroom apartment and pay about $1300 for rent and utilities. I'd much rather pay $1300 and live alone then pay $650 and have a roommate.

I actually have someone staying on my couch right now, but it's just a temporary thing and I'll be back to being alone soon.

American "encouraging of independence" is more about moving out of your parents house than living alone.

That said, fuck having a roommate. It costs more for a reason, cause it's great. If I wasn't married with a child I'd gladly still live alone.

Yeah, I'd rather live alone than with random strangers. You don't know what kind of roommates you are getting to if it was just you and someone else.

You do save money though if you live with a bunch and whoever the home owner is, they are going to want strict rules about cleaning up.

The neck beards swarming this topic talking about how terrible they think roommates are.

If you've had an issue with the majority of people you lived with you're the common factor.

Just set boundaries and rules before you move in. Write up an actual contract if you're really unsure. Make sure both of you are on the lease so you share liability.

Don't expect them to be your bestfriend, and use a shared calendar app for due dates on bills.

Just be an adult if there's an issue, and don't be passive aggressive. Don't expect anything to get resolved if you're not willing to communicate with the other person.

I've had nothing, but fantastic roommates.

I own my home (3 br and 2.5 ba) but have my brother and his partner as roommates. The home costs me about $1400/mo and I collect $900/mo from them.

Everyone is going to have something annoying about them though. My roommates use an ungodly number of dishes for every meal and we have to run the dishwasher twice a day to keep up with it. I've also had to replace the dishwasher already after 3 years of living here (not sure how old the other one was though). Any time I want to cook a meal, I have to do a full load of dishes to clear the sink so I can use it to clean vegetables and stuff, then go back and do another load to clean up my own dishes that I used while cooking. It pisses me off enough that I've had arguments with them but they don't seem to have any inclination of changing their habits, so I just have to live with it and think of the $900 I pocket every month.
