My assumption is that trailer was targeted at book readers. As somebody who didn't read the books and knows nothing about The Wheel of Time series, I understood nothing from the trailer. It felt like there was A LOT packed into it.

All that said, I'll still check the show out when it debuts. I have enough friends excited for it that I'd like to join in on the discourse.

The first book, which I'm assuming will be the first season of the show, is very much Fellowship of the Ring. Just with Gandalf's role being done by Moiraine.

Moiraine is an Aes Sedai. They're basically a bunch of powerful magic users that unofficially control the world, kinda like Dune's Bene Gesserit. And they're all women...for reasons I won't say here.

I believe the showrunner has said it's pulling from the first three books, but yeah, mostly the first.

Hmm, interesting. I'd imagine that's maybe to introduce more of the characters that don't appear until those books like the Seanchan and maybe the Aiel. I don't think they're actually going to get to the Stone of Tear and Callandor by the end of the first season.

I've said this before, but I'm interested to see how the showrunners adapt such a colossal (and colossally long story). With the advantage of a completed story they'll know which pieces are important and which aren't. And also which will work better for the TV format. For example, Perrin's whole arc in books...shit, was it like 7 thru 11... was fucking interminable and could be done in a single episode (should the series get that far).

For the sake of comparison, the current word count for A Song of Ice and Fire stands at 1.8 million. The word count for The Wheel of Time is 4.4 million.

The first season is basically the first book. There will be some stuff shuffled around from the other books that will help with world-building, but it ends more or less where the first book ends. Some stuff from book 1 (Caemlyn, almost certainly) will be in the second season, according to leaks.

If no Camelyn then that would mean no Elayne and Gawyn...in theory. I think we'd still see Logain though; pretty sure one of the trailers/teasers showed a guy in a cage and I have to think that's still him.

Haven't re-read the series since the last book came out nearly 9 (!!!) years ago. Despite reading the first 6 books at least 5 times throughout my life the details all start to fade after a while.

I just started book 7

The hardcover release of book 7 was when I first discovered the series!

Anyway, fair warning, books 7-10 aren't great, especially after all the awesomeness of books 4-6. Good news for you is you can read them all back to back and don't have to be disappointed after a multi-year wait. If you can persevere though, the series improves drastically after that and come to as satisfying a conclusion as you're likely to get from a series of its length.

Yeah, user SaveEstelle warned me that books 7-10 are a bit of a lull, but Perrin has been my favorite character so far, so if he has a major arc throughout this stretch, I can probably power through it.

Yeah, they started filming the second season and recently announced the casting for Elayne, etc. And Logain is a main character in the first season, so a lot of his early story stuff like his capture will be on-screen.

I love Perrin and it definitely made his sections easier to get through.

Sadly during the lull it progressively kind of gets worse and worse too

Book 10 in particular is kind of garbage. I'm really glad that Jordan got to write one more actually good book to completion (11) before he passed away, at least.

Book 10 is the hottest garbage. It was so bad I didn't even read Book 11 until just before 12 came out because I knew the actual end of the series was in sight. Otherwise it might have pulled me permanently away.

Anyone else a bit alarmed that it seems like there are events from the second/third book already being shown in the S1 trailer? I know 14 books is a lot, but you think they would keep the narrative structure similar until at least book 4/5 (and then just pretend that books 6-9 never happened)

Yes, WoT has balefire.

I'm hearing there's going to be quite a bit of New Spring in season one, which makes a lot of sense as it provides good backstory for Moiraine and Lan.

I mean, that trailer basically was New Spring plus the flight from the Two Rivers.

Not how I pictured a Wheel of Time adaptation in my mind, but if it's done well, I'll support it. Tacitly. I don't watch any TV, so I dunno if I'll go out of my way to find this, but maybe.

I dunno. I think of the cover art and how bright it is...and this is much, much darker even if you ignore that so many scenes are at night. Feels like they wanted to make Game of Thrones 2. (I have not watched or read GoT/aSoIAF.)

The only thing I know about this series is there is a really powerful wizard/mage/magic guy with a spell called Balefire that's incredibly op. I remember this from like a decade ago during multiple MPFC contests.
