When I got to work yesterday, the morning desk clerk was finishing up checking in an older couple. They spoke for a minute and she suggested they eat at the diner across the street. Then they all left, the couple to their room, and coworker went home.

Several hours later the couple comes back and has a container. They asked where my coworker was and I explained that she was gone for the day. They handed me the container and said they brought some hush puppies for her, but since she was gone that I could have them instead.

So... I ate them. I could've put them in the fridge for her, but I didn't know when she'd be back, plus they gave them to me and told me to eat them.

This morning I wake up to texts from her asking what happened to the food that was given to her. I was honest about it, and she thought it was funny, but now I feel like an ass. I promised to buy her lunch to make up for it, but she's refusing. I know it's just a silly mistake, but I can't help but feel that I've wronged her.

That's what I thought, it was just a handful of hush puppies. Then when she was texting me this morning wanting the food, I felt awful. lol

No you didnt do anything wrong, dont trick yourself into that kind of thinking. It is always morally correct to eat hush puppies.

It's not a mistake, you are 0% in the wrong. No wrong occurred at all.

They told you to eat it, you ate it. Case closed, problem solved. It's not as if she was the ONE TRUE OWNER of the food.

I wouldn't even say you're obligated to buy her anything or give her anything to "replace" it. Do it if you want to, but don't do it if you only feel like you have to.

The thing is that I knew they intended for it to go to her. Sure, they told me to take it since she wasn't here, but I could've easily saved it for her. I honestly didn't expect her to even know anything was given, or to check up on it.

I guess they saw her this morning when they checked out and asked about it. She was mostly nice about it, but she did kinda call me out for eating her food. It was in a lighthearted way, but it really just made me feel bad about the whole situation.

Next time something like this happens, it's going in the fridge. I don't care if it goes cold and stale waiting on them.

Or you could text them about it. Like text them that someone brought them food. And maybe they will say you can have it because they won't be in for a couple of days or something...

Yes, they intended to. And then circumstances changed. And they changed their intent by literally telling you to eat them instead.

This is how life works.

It's not like they asked you to save them for her and then you ate them anyway. The only wrong occurring here is you being objectively wrong for feeling bad about it.

Then either she was joking, or she's an asshole. Either way it is not even remotely your problem or your fault.

Realistically, anything deep fried is so much better fresh than leftover that not eating it on the spot would have been a disservice to the food.

I'm doing so much better in this area of my life. It can still be a problem when it comes to stuff like this, but I'm able to stand up for myself so much better now.

Oh, there's been lots since then. I really have no issue with type of stuff any more once they become hostile.

I even almost got in a fist fight with a crazy stalker guy that followed some guests here and broke into their room. He was fighting with them and I went out and broke it up and he acted like he was going to come at me too. Ended up having him arrested. That was fun. >___>

In some ways, yes. My social anxiety is way better now, and I found my backbone. However it's still really difficult to deal with being cussed at and insulted so often. So, noticeable improvement to anxiety levels and ability to deal with confrontations better, but steep increase in stress and it makes me feel worse most of the time. I'm just usually mentally exhausted and 2 days off just doesn't give enough recovery time.

I don't know, it feels like I've reached the point where the bad is outweighing the good again in terms of mental health.

You ever seen the movie called "The Night Clerk"? You kind of remind me of the main character of that movie, except more normal.
