Like there's a strong implication Darunia and Impa died (Darunia being gone when you enter Volvagia's chamber and IIRC Impa going into the well to seal Bongo Bongo but Bongo Bongo breaks out with no word or sign on what happened to Impa). But then on the other hand you have Nabooru + Zelda who are also sages but they're still alive (Zelda needs no explanation while Nabooru gets blasted by the witches, but they also make the comment that they're going to brainwash her again which implies they just teleported her away). They use that word when they talk to you after the temple--"Awakened as a sage." I take that to mean that through their involvement in the temple, they realized their powers and transformed in some way, much like how they transform into those balls of energy in the credits sequence. Then, they use their powers to help seal the evil while you're fighting it. Darunia says, and I quote, "Nothing has made me happier than helping you seal the evil here!"
