Crazy how time flies.

I got my Xbox Christmas 2002. The bundle that came with Halo CE, JSRF and Sega GT. My parents let me stay up until midnight to play it.

Unfortunately for me there was a massive blackout so I had to wait until something like 2am and I played the first level of Halo CE. Good times. I had no expectations of JSRF but ended up loving that game.

I weirdly did not end up getting a PS2. Which honestly worked out fine in the long run due to how accessible that library was. Biggest things I was jealous of at the time was Smackdown and GTA being timed exclusive. But it meant the Xbox really defined a lot of my gaming tastes I ended up having down the line.

  • Got into FPS campaigns. I had a PS1 so stuff like Medal of Honor just didn't compete with Halo, Timesplitters 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and all the other ones I played
  • The choice of proper split screen coop games expanded so much choice for local multiplayer. No longer was it just 1v1 and 2v2 modes or racing games. Now we could play entire games together. That felt like such a huge step up from what was on PS1
  • Renting Star Wars KOTOR and expecting a typical lightsaber game. I was so damn baffled when I first played that game. Why can't I just hit people with my sword? Ugh this sucks. Wait I can choose what to say to people? That's different. *25 hours of gameplay later* Holy shit this is one of the best games I ever played. Got into WRPG's from then on. Morrowind as well was something so new and different compared to anything else I had played
  • Being blown away by that Splinter Cell demo but being so damn bad at it. I ended up buying an official guide and following it. But I got into stealth games because of it. The sequels I had no issue with. Also finally played Hitman 2 Silent Assassin on Xbox after only playing the Codename 47 demo on PC and loving that as well.
  • Those hidden gem games that still aren't really available elsewhere. Deathrow was one of my favorite games of that generation and barely anyone knows about it. Bufffy was also one of the better licensed games of the time.
  • Custom soundtracks! Was really fun loading up games with cheesy Linkin Park music
Such a great system and time of my life. So many memories.

Crazy to think how long Xbox has been around now. They still feel like the newest guy on the console block. I suppose technically they still are. But console wise they're now up to Sony's PS4 and Nintendo's Gamecube which is pretty nuts.

I walked into a gamestop one day and wasn't expecting to buy a console but I started looking at xbox games. I recently had started a job so I had money. I ended up getting an xbox on a whim, with dynasty warriors 3 and Hunter The Reckoning. Xbox was a pretty good console. It was pretty damn powerful for its era too

Sort of. I enjoyed it I guess for a while but kinda forgot about it later as I got more games. Then I went on a trip to China and while there I picked up an English copy of Romance of the Three Kingdoms and started to read it. I recognized many of the characters from being mentioned in various tourist spots from my China trip.

I realized also that these characters were people I'd actually seen before my trip. They were from Dynasty Warriors 3. It wasn't until that moment that I had ever realized the game was based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms. With a new interest in the subject, I immediately bought Dynasty Warriors 4, followed by the newly launched DW 5 like a year later

I ended up being obsessed with the series for years

I started with 4, it was such a good game. Having so much going on at once was crazy. And the RPG elements were nice too.

I got into RotK (at least I mean using that title) through the strategy game, have yet to read the novel or anything.
