Jackie Chan beats you a bunch of middle schoolers and slams one of them into an iron pole in a block of cement, and it just tumbles over on top of them like its made of cardboard.

The bullying parts seems SUPER long in this. I feel like this didnt bother me as much as a kid, but Im seeing these racist-ass kids terrorize very black Jaden Smith and I dont feel good about it one bit >_>

How often are reboots actually good though?

Because they usually only reboot movies that were already good (because the point is to piggyback off the positive brand recognition), the reboots already have a high bar to overcome, which they usually don't.

I already dont hold any special memories of Karate Kid and honestly remember more of the shitty Saturday morning cartoon than the first or third movie

The reboot was unnecessary.

Plus, if I recall, it really should have been titled 'Kung-Fu Kid'.

I don't mind the reboot.

Is it great? Nah. But it's entertaining at times.

Yeah, maybe I was harsh on it at the beginning. That first act is very very long and incredibly rough, but it finds its footing as it goes along.

Plenty are good, even when they aren't necessarily better than the original. The more glaring cash-grab and star-making vehicle ones like this tend to be bad, though.

I said the beginning was bad, but like not on the level of Venom 1/2 bad.

The only reason I didnt walk out of either Venom was because both times had someone pay for me, and I didnt want to be rude.

Karate Kid Jaden Smith at least has average things going for it

Basically. Karate is Japanese, but the entire movie is set in China and he's trained by a Chinese mentor because the Chinese film market has way more money than the Japanese do.

It's essentially kind of racist on the part of the execs that okayed it, because it's basically saying all Asian people are the same.

The problem is, that's pretty much what all reboots and remakes are today.

Once upon a time directors would do remakes because they loved the original and wanted to remake it for a new audience, or because they saw flaws in it and thought they could do it better, because the "original" was itself an adaptation of a different work (usually books) and the remake director wants to make something more faithful to the original work, etc.

Now pretty much every remake and reboot ever is made solely because studios are terrified of risk and desperately want to exploit the name recognition and nostalgia of older popular intellectual property. And they tend to wind up being shit because no one involved in the production actually gives a shit about the content beyond the name.

There's another thing about the OG Karate Kid.

Okinawan Karate is a complete martial art, but the Japanese were more obsessed with boxing at the time so no one cared about Karate... this mirrors the aggressive difference between popular Cobra Kai and traditional Karate
