Sure to some degree, but I'm not as worried about my contribution to society as I am in my contribution to my loved ones.

I work for a university and play a role in making campus landscaping look nice which draws students in to hopefully earn degrees and go on to improve the world, but I work so that I can support my family. I work to live, I definitely don't live to work.

More or less. I work for the government, so there are several layers of bureaucracy between me and the actual impact of what my department does, which makes it feel less rewarding, but it's important work and I feel like I make a meaningful contribution to those that I directly work with/for, so that's fun.

Are you comfortable saying what part of the government you work for? I always find it interesting hearing from people in state/federal jobs because a lot of it mirrors the work I do with the university. We're like a smaller government that is only worth a couple billion dollars.

I work with the First Nations and Inuit Health branch of the Canadian government, which is responsible for overseeing the allocation of FN monies to health provision in communities. I'm mostly doing administrative stuff at the moment, which is all very important to support the branch's work, but not as front-line as some of the other stuff that goes on, like environmental health sampling or running dental clinics. I'm going to be applying for a Masters of Public Health in the next year or two in hopes of being able to move into a more epidemiology-focused role, which will be be more interesting and impactful (not to mention paying better). I've also been doing some work with PHAC's (Canadian equivalent of the CDC) Covid response, which is similar back-end stuff that is important on paper, but doesn't feel as rewarding.

Good luck with the masters!

Yes, but can you measure your contribution to society with literal inches?

I can measure my contribution to your mom with literal inches (though it'd be reasonable to simplify it to feet).

DrPrimemaster posted...

Sometimes. There have been many instances where I've done everything I can on my end, but stuff still goes wrong or takes longer than it should because it gets caught up somewhere else. A lot of the stuff I'm handling is just things like processing invoices for payment, though, so while bureaucratic delays are frustrating when I just want to get the work done, I don't have to deal with the added stress of knowing that somebody's health is being jeopardized by having to wait. That would be a lot more draining, I would imagine, though my region is doing relatively well in that regard (at least compared to communities elsewhere in the country that haven't had potable water for 25 years or face suicide crises every other month).

"Contribute to society" is a dumb capitalist idea, everyone has intrinsic human worth regardless of what they "contribute".

Anyways, I'm a web developer, so no, not really. I do stuff that is very niche and just adds some minor layer of convenience to people's lives. I don't understand how we all get paid so much but people in minimum wage jobs contribute stuff that is way more valuable to everyone's day-to-day life. I mean I can't really complain about the paycheck but like chelsea said it's totally unfulfilling

When I do manage to finish a story and get it out somewhere, I feel like I contribute to the world in a greater sense than I can grasp, though it does not stop me from trying. When I am at work, I feel like a replacement cog in a machine that was doomed to fail long before even my parents took part in the scam known as the modern workforce; and the mess of it all is getting worse no matter how much or little I give.

So you tell me.

If you have money left over after maintaining your existence, you contribute to society.

All that cash represents the work you have done and have yet to be compensated for. If you pay someone for something with that cash, that person will make a profit on top of your compensation, which contributes to their part in society.

Uhh, paying for subsistence also generates profit for somebody else. Often quite a bit, actually, since you can get away with charging higher margins than necessary because people don't have a choice but to pay you for them.
