Your daughter has been dating an alien and it's going well. It's gotten serious enough that the alien's family have come over to make dinner.

You sit at the table but your daughter and her boyfriend aren't in the room, leaving you alone in a room full of several unknown aliens. There's a weird pile of unrecongizable goopey stuff in front of you in strange colors, tough but dripping with juices. You assume it must be the food since it's on the table and the aliens put it there.

It looks horrible. The texture is really weird and hard but you don't want to make a scene so you take a bite and try to eat it.

It tastes absolutely disgusting and is incredibly difficult to swallow but you realize every single alien in the room is now intently staring at you, they're not even eating, just staring directly at you. So you try to be polite and force the entire thing down your throat with difficulty while pretending it tastes good.

"That was... Well that was certainly something! Thank you so much!" you say diplomatically once you've finished.

"Wouldn't you prefer eating food? It'll be ready soon" your daughter's alien boyfriend says in confusion as he and your daughter enter the room.

Then you realize that the stuff wasn't food. It was alien trash. The mess that came from preparing the actual meal. You just did the equivalent of someone eating a pile of empty pringles boxes, coke cans and plastic wrap and pretending it was delicious while not actually eating the food.

"Daaaaaaaaaad! You're embarrasing me in front of the Matriarch." your daughter says with nervous disdain as she realizes what you just did.

How do you react?
What do you do?

Can I just say "My bad, it's just we have food that actually looks like this in other parts of the world." and maybe even play it off with a joke about it being undercooked?
Or do a straight faced "I'm sorry this is all new to me and I'm trying."

Or can I not get the sympy of the people?
