https://www.reddit.com/r/HermanCainAward/comments/rurcys/buck_scoffed_at_masks_and_vaccines_got_covid_had/

Buck from Missouri was a hunter. Half his Facebook photos are him posing with a deer or some other animal he killed. He posted an unmemorable selection of anti-mask and anti-vax memes.

The real story begins when he got COVID in November. He was put on a ventilator and suffered two major strokes. He's alive and conscious, but paralyzed from the neck down, fed by a tube, and unable to talk due to the tracheotomy. His doctors say that this is how he can expect to spend the rest of his life. When a right-winger says that COVID has a 99% survival rate, mention that stories like this are counted as survivors.

You or I might find this a fate worse than death, spending the rest of your life in a flesh prison straight out of Johnny Got His Gun. But to Buck's extremely Christian family, it's a blessing.

While he was in the hospital, they prayed for miraculous healing, and they've decided that this is an answer to their prayers. His wife and daughter both profess their belief that God is good, even while reporting that Buck is moving his lips to say things like "Help me, I can't move."

They're making plans to have him moved to a long-term care facility where he'll be tended like a houseplant. If this were me, I'd want someone to give me a nice dose of morphine so I could slip away in peace. But of course, I'm fully vaccinated, so I don't have to worry about COVID leaving me mute and quadriplegic.

Don't share Buck's fate. Get vaccinated.

Putting aside covid, I don't understand how loved ones can look at someone that can get to a condition like this where they're basically a vegetable that can't move or do anything and then do everything to keep them alive even as they're suffering. My grandma had declining health the last few years of her life but towards the end after she had suffered another stroke she was basically a shell of a person. She couldn't remember anything and needed people watching her 24 hours a day to feed and bathe her. Even during that time a few of my uncles and aunts wanted to do everything they could to prolong her life by giving her different painkillers and medicines even though she was clearly suffering from so much pain. It just seems selfish to me to keep them alive if they're gonna be hooked up to several machines or needing a cocktail of drugs just to make them comfortable.

Thank you for posting this. You arent alone. My grandad went into hospital about six weeks ago with a chest infection. He slowly deteriorated over a number of weeks and by the end he was just a shell of a body kept alive by a ventilator and IVs. He eventually passed away and those last two weeks were just torture. He was still conscious but just mentally broken. Unable to speak or eat or drink. I cant imagine what hell that was. His last words before he was unable to speak was about how miserable he was and wanted to go home. The sad thing is he wouldnt have made the trip home.

My sister is a nurse and has worked in hospices before and explained that when someone is dying of cancer they can put something in place for end of life care to try and make it as humane as possible. But for other diseases that just isnt there so you tend to end up with a lot of situations where people are just prolonged in pain because they dont know what else to do. Theres got to be a better more humane way and I get there are so many arguments against that need addressing properly but after seeing what my grandad went through there are definitely cases where a proper end of life plan would be preferable to prolonging someones end indefinitely despite them being miserable.

I obviously can't go into details, but several years ago I had a patient who was 100% paralyzed to a stroke, and the family absolutely would not let the patient go. The case became so mentally anguishing to me that I had to get therapy. Unfortunately, there was nothing I could do and it was just brutal to deal with.

Somewhat of an aside, but I've always found it very odd/confusing how people tend to be like this with regard to other people, but typically not so when it comes to animals and pets. People are more generally willing to recognize when it's "time" to put an animal down to put an earlier end to its suffering, even if it's still something difficult for us to do/accept.

It seems to indicate that we have a harder time letting go of other fellow humans than we do with non-humans, even when they're both classified as loved ones or even family. Not sure what that really says about us, though.

Not sure why that is surprising. Also its worth take into account the various laws etc that make it a lot easier and cheaper to euthanise an animal over a human. I imagine if human euthanasia were allowed in the US people would use it.

You'd need to enlighten me then, because I sure don't get it. Are you suggesting that it's because animals are generally seen as more expendable?

I think even if it were "allowed" there'd still be way more people hesitant to euthanize a human compared to an animal/pet.

It is subjective and you might be one of the people who do think animals are worth more or are equal to humans. If so Im not going to try and change your mind. Ive had pets and cried when they passed more than when some humans I know have died.

And yeah sure people will probably be more willing to euthanise animals than humans for various reasons. Dont doubt that. But I think the option should be there in specific cases. We already have end of life pathways for cancer patients at the very least this should be expanded to other terminal illnesses.
