This isn't the topic for Endwalker-completers yet!

A rough collection of B8 users can be found on the following spreadsheet, so you too can wonder why so many of us are on Lamia: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1l74RR-geLuIqazjQLeNa7xCyrlwLHBloRjuVQB-who4/edit?usp=sharing

If you're on Primal, we now have a CWLS to join! Hit me up when you see me and I'll get you in, and I'll give you permission to add others, too.

i have huge anxiety about playing any role other than DPS and so I've been using command missions at low levels to learn some basics but a lot of command missions comes down to actually instructing your NPCs to act, as well as having tanks made of iron so the dynamics aren't really the same, which is why i'm now about to run trusts just to make sure i understand what i'm doing as healer before making other players deal with it

Command missions give me more anxiety than any actual dungeon run ever has.

Some of the combat in the later ones can be borderline impossible.

(I did exactly 5 because it was needed for a rank I went years without knowing existed)

So far I've only ran the 20-32 dungeons in command missions so I'm not sure if they get worse later, but so far the only problematic part has been getting the tank to run out of the fire on the last boss of halatali. definitely inferior to trusts though even if they do actually use AOE- the flawless mechanic dancing of the trust AI was a much easier way to learn the dungeons than watching guide videos

Here this is how you tank:

Run into mobs.
Hit your AoE ability.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the pull is complete.
Use one (1) defensive cooldown.
Hit more AoE abilities.
If enemies are not dead when your original defensive cooldown expires, use another.
Continue using AoE abilities.

Congratulations you are now a successful tank.

"but what about bosses"
Pretend you are a DPS. 90% of the time it isn't even worth it to use your defensive cooldowns on bosses because they don't hit as hard as trash pulls.

yeah i've found that with the tank classes, I'm pretty ready to go with tanking - my biggest gap with tanking is a lot of the ARR dungeons aren't straightforward runs, I don't know them well (I leveled through ARR 3 years ago then dropped off) and I feel it's my responsibility to lead the way as much as possible. it's healing that i definitely need the more practice on before unleashing on other players - I especially find the target switching stressful at times playing on controller

A lot of people don't know the ARR dungeons, and even among those that do it is easy to forget. Just ask if you arent sure, chances are half the party doesn't know and the one that does will be happy to help.

Have had plenty of leveling roulletes where we are running back to pick up firesand or something off the ground that no one picked up.

A lot of people will stand in front of the right direction and jump even if no words are exchanged - they aren't being rude/impatient, they're just signaling the path since a lot of people don't remember which path to walk down in the thousand maws of toto rak

But if you ever type "don't really remember this one" someone will either help guide you or the whole group is new anyway and you can stumble together

The early ARR dungeons also ease you into healing. Not a lot of heals are actually required unless the tank is big pulling and bad. I'd say start getting tricky at Cutter's Cry, mostly due to some weird mechanics. Stone Vigil is only bad if the tank is underheated, Darkhold is another weird one, and Aurum Vale...is Aurum Vale. Still, they are manageable and people will usually be understanding for new healers.

Things do not get routinely spicy until the expac dungeons, so I'd say getting your bearings in ARR group content is the best way to learn.

That said I'd still probably go with one of the two pure healers to learn. SCH feels pretty anemic until you are well into the 50s/60s to have more aetherflow actions, and I'm still pretty sure most SGE skills are made up.

There is no other outlet to spend Astronomy tomes on other than the Radiant gear. Not until 6.2 when gear better than the current tome and raid set comes out and Astronomy tomes replace Aphorism tomes as the 'lesser' tome currency.

So you can either gear up alts to make them stronger or just don't worry about overcapping.

Yes, they replaced job quests in Shadowbringers and Endwalker. In addition there is a capstone quest for each job you get at 80 that serves as a kind of epilogue to the job story.

Never. The loot treadmill resets every even patch but astronomy gear is still that set, just it becomes uncapped and replaced with a different weekly tomestone. So you should still be spending them on your main role to make experts and normal raids easier. Just glam over it.

You shouldn't actually have to swap targets all that much on healer, honestly- if a DPS gets tickled and lowered to 60% HP and there's no unavoidable damage coming up, heal them with free tools like assize, physis, or whispering dawn as they become available (remember that passive HP recovery over time is not insignificant, too). During trash pulls with the tank, keep the tank targetted the whole time because your aoe ability doesnt need a target (unless you're AST, in which case I'd heavily recommend learning healer on literally any other job). During boss fights, damage is usually so low you can keep the tank topped off with the necessary aoe heals plus the tank's self heals.

Can't really help much with controllers, though.

Does controller really not have a "target of target" quickswap button? It quickly swaps between the tank and what the tank is attacking, presuming they are holding aggro. I can see AST cards being considerably more annoying on controller but tt makes normal switching easy.

choosing my party target is A-OK because you can always cycle through those on the D-pad up/down, it's then jumping back to the right target to dps that i get in a tizzy with sometimes

also my other point of tank anxiety is i don't know how big people want me to pull so open to any general points on that

Typically 2 groups is the standard for big pulling. In fact most dungeons won't let you pull more than that. ARR has some weird dungeon layouts but it's still not really advised to do more.

That said if you're not comfortable and need to pull single groups for whatever reason people are usually ok with that, especially in the spicier leveling dungeons

everything after heavensward should be safe to wall to wall if your healer isn't asleep at the wheels and you're cycling mitigation, yeah

as a healer, i find double pulling to be a lot more relaxing than single pulls actually. you can use cooldowns far more aggressively because the amount of time you spend in combat is effectively halved

Dungeons very consistentally make it so you can't truly pull after ARR, wall to wall can be harder sometimes but it's always possible if you understand your cooldown and the Healer is confident. There are very few situations where I don't prefer pulling wall to wall, like the last room of the level 79 dungeon I talked about last week.

Don't forget that Arm's Length is a defensive tank cooldown!

And then that second boss has the DoT that absolutely murders people if its not esunad (which I didnt realize until then)... not fun!

I think the tank and healer both have to be pretty competent to wall-to-wall Bardham at least. Ive never tried it but have definitely had a pretty decent amount of deaths just doing two packs at a time there.

All three bosses there are annoying to heal if you are unprepared. The first one has the ants that the healer is supposed to kite around while the rest of the party burns the boss, the second one has the dot, the third one has both the idiot kite orb and the drag in/ram away mechanic even experienced players will get owned by on occasion.

Honestly, aside from the final boss having some weird aoes, I don't think Holminster hits any harder than the average dungeon. I think it has that reputation because it is so many people's first exposure to dungeon tanking and healing. It also is punishing if you aren't walking in with the best 70 poetics gear you can buy. But Sirensong Sea and I assume the 81 dungeon (haven't run it enough) are also like this. Sirensong Sea actually has a few specifically obnoxious pulls on top of that.

In other words it really is only punishing unpreparedness, there's not any tricky pulls or weird gearing issues like the x5 middle dungeons have. It just traps a lot of noobs.

Sirensong Sea is nowhere near Holminister imo. I remember wiping repeatedly as I levelled all my healers up through there if the tank tried to wall to wall; I don't think I've ever seen a single wipe to trash in Sirensong Sea.

It felt like most of the healers were missing vital parts of their healing kit for dungeon healing, like Recitation on SCH and Celestial Intersection on AST.

The first big pull off the boat in Sirensong Sea as well as the first pull after the second boss with like 20 zombies were pretty bad during Stormblood. The middle part is also kinda weird? I dunno! I'm not getting these Holminster horror shows outside of that last boss either so I'll chalk it up to different experiences.

I will admit that Shadowbringers dungeons bosses are more complex but I don't think that's a healer/tank problem because I expect all newbies to eat some shit on mechanics. Conversely, Stormblood's aren't as bad but there are quite a few untelegraphed tankbusters which are a "fun" mechanic specifically for unprepared tanks and healers.
