I mean, is it really that hard to go onto wikipedia, pick out a couple of facts, and throw them into a powerpoint?

Being a professor sounds easy!

That's why there are no job requirements to get hired.

It's a pretty common misconception unfortunately.

I think the issue is that the vast majority of students don't engage in any academic activity in college besides going to class. So they kinda assume that's all there is.

Yep. The vast majority of students are dullards. No intellectual curiosity, want to do the least amount of work possible, and cry when their degree doesn't give them a six-figure job right away.

why should they, though?

a professor just has to worry about the course and their students(minimally, at least)

a restaurant manager has to handling hiring, discipline, ordering, budgets, scheduling, dealing with customers, training employees, making sure everything is up to health codes, etc. and they actually make money for the franchise owner.
I literally flipped my opinion in the next post to the ire of CE intellectual elite

lol

That's a lecturer. A professor has to worry about material for their course(s), students in their course(s), advise their grad students doing all kinds of different projects, deal with undergrad interns, seek funding on a consistent basis so they're writing a lot of proposals, write their own research papers, help organize and/or attend conferences to keep up with their research area and remain active in the community, (if the school/department gives a shit about the surrounding community) help organize outreach events, spend a nontrivial amount of time reading and giving feedback on dissertations if they are on their student's committee or are asked to be on another student's committee, navigate through department politics all in the quest to earn tenure, and I'm sure I'm leaving things out for certain areas since my experience is only in the computer science and engineering departments.

I wanted to be a professor when I started grad school and that tune quickly changed when I saw all the shit that my advisor had to deal with and how long she stayed in the office daily. So I went the research lab route instead.

Gonna revisit the previously asked question about how hard is it to shut the hell up when you don't know what you're talking about. I don't run my mouth over politics because I largely don't give a shit and not giving that much of a shit leaves me uninformed for a lot of complex political things. But it's never been a struggle to keep da trap shut and read.

Idk how it is in cs, but in neuroscience it's pretty rare to see professors that aren't pulling 60+ hour work weeks. This isn't really the expectation in a lot of industry (though it can be, my brother has always worked the same overworked schedule since switching to industry).

So there's: exceedingly long training period, very little chance of securing a job, overwork, and then poor compensation.

tbf all the professors I interacted with in my research group were extremely OG and tenured.. I'm not saying it's an easy path... but traditionally it has been one of the only paths where you can be paid a good wage to be an academic (now you can go into tech and make big money)

true but I geuss my point is, being an academic is somewhat like being an artist who is supported by a royal house (your uni lol)

it's a passion and a way of life (with a lot of freedom!), few passions also make bank

This is also a bit different in experimental sciences vs cs. You absolutely don't have much freedom because experiments are expensive. Requires funding, and that means all the issues attached to getting funding.
