It's Thursday, you know what that means: fight night! Here's the card for tonight:

https://i.imgur.com/cjpTFSJ.jpg

The main event pits the defending champion End Game against one of the strongest contenders in the field, Sawblaze. Also on the card is Tombstone vs. Free Shipping, a first-time matchup on BattleBots TV that revisits a long rivalry between the two teams and their previous bots, Last Rites and Original Sin, that dates back to well before BattleBots returned to TV. As usual, please put any discussion of match results under spoiler tags until 24 hours after the episode airs out of consideration for people who can't watch the episode live, especially if you decide to watch the episode early on Discovery+ before it airs on TV. Plus, stay on the lookout for the bonus fight on the BattleBots Youtube channel this coming Sunday.

Will this episode be as explosive as last week? Turn in and find out!

IT'S ROBOT FIGHTIN' TIME! Malice vs. Blacksmith leads us off and Blacksmith spends almost the whole fight on fire. Malice rightfully wins the judge's decision but Blacksmith wins over the crowd.

There's been a lot of bots on fire this season, hasn't there?

So the upper deck actually is increasing the amount of engagement and significant hits during fights. I know it's been a polarizing addition to the arena so far, but it sounds like it's actually having a positive effect based on what Mr. Bot Whisperer was saying.

SMEEEEEEEE vs. Gigabyte was as fun as I hoped, and SMEEEEEEEE was no match for the power of SPEEEEEEEEN.

NINE SECONDS. That was nine seconds from the starting bell to when Sawblaze landed out of the arena after getting launched by End Game. That might be the fastest win in BattleBots history.

No, I don't count the time wasted on the countdown when it comes to out of the arena wins. He's already out, a countdown is pointless.

I usually end up being a bit behind since I have to record the episodes and watch them the next day, but the main event looks like it'll be a good one.

Other than some jitters at the start of the season most of the bots seem to be dialed in at this point, especially compared to past seasons for participants with multiple seasons.

Hydra vs. Glitch holy shit, i went into it unenthused cuz i figured they were basically giving Hydra a bye against a rookie so it would get into the round of 32, but what ended up happening is the biggest upset of the season. go Glitch!

Tombstone vs. Free Shipping glad to see Tombstone get a good win, but it was lame that its weapon failed so early. i wanna see more destruction from Tombstone.

End Game vs. Saw Blaze another holy shit, End Game is a beast. that was calculated and expertly executed. definitely secured the number 1 seed there.

Although I absolutely hated the US version, mainly because of the announcing. I am not a huge fan of the Battlebots announcers either actually. I though Jonathan Pearce was always the best. Although I do still like battlebots a fair bit.

I think what makes Chris and Kenny great is that they legitimately give a shit. Like either could absolutely treat this like a side gig that takes a couple of weeks of the year and go about their day jobs. But they don't. They clearly enjoy everything about it. They know the game. They can meaningfully talk the game. And it shows. Like compare their season 1 of the reboot commentating to now. It is night and day.

All of this also applies to Jenny Taft as well.

The Robot Wars arena is (IMO) more balanced for all of the different weapon types. The better hazards leads to more tactical fights rather than just "crash weapons and pray theirs breaks sooner" like many fights in the BattleBox are, and the Pit gives control bots a fair and viable win condition instead of them needing to depend on judge's decisions where the criteria is heavily weighed against them. I think BattleBots would be way better if used the same layout as the Robot Wars arena. Just remove the house robots (they're just producer-controlled hazards) and add a timer so the Pit can't be opened until a full minute into the fight (to prevent a Storm2 situation where wedgebots are fishing for quick wins via the Pit) and I think it would be perfectly balanced for every kind of robot. Also, yes, Tornado definitely cheated.

But everything else involved, from the quality of the robots to the production values to even the commentators, I think BattleBots does better. Part of that is just due to the budget though. Robot Wars aired on the taxpayer-funded BBC Network in the UK, so there's no advertising money coming in for the show and no sponsorship money allowed for the teams to use. Everything feels cheaper because it is cheaper.

I just have so much trouble rooting for smug and/or salty people in BattleBots. Like, I get it, it's a competition, but it's also meant to be a fun competition. People who get really bent out of shape over losing a fair fight are just not that fun to watch. I love good sports, and a bit of disappointment is understandable, but people who like...punch the glass, or get mad about the judges all the time, that's just not great sportsmanship.

I can tolerate smug comments and over-the-top confidence like what Ray Billings was doing in the earlier seasons and what Jake Ewert was doing at first... but actively sucking the fun out of a fight just to win like what Jake did in that Huge fight last season was the point where he went too far for me. That was basically spitting in the face of what the competition is supposed to be, which is far beyond simply being unsportsmanlike.

So I'm still on the Jake/Hydra hate train for now. Maybe one more karmic beatdown might make me feel better and forgive him.

imo what made it irredeemable was when he started back-talking the ref. employing the method he did to fight Huge was petty and extremely counter to the spirit of the competition, but it would have probably been excusable if he hadn't gone for the full "annoying older brother" vibe with it. when the ref tells you you need to back off, you back the fuck off, you don't start with the "not touching, can't get mad! not touching, can't get mad!" type bullshit.

I think another example of somebody who irks me is Al Kindle. When he's winning, he's fine, but lately he's been losing a lot and he always seems to blame it on the judges when his weapon does barely any damage at all. I think this season was a massive improvement, since his hammer saw can actually inflict good damage, but he still gets pissed when he loses lol

Ugh, Sawblaze has been so dominant this season. That match broke my heart.

What a shame that Free Shipping lost 3 wheels though. With Tombstone's weapon getting busted yet again, Shipping could've conceivably won a pushing match with 3 or maybe even 2 wheels. But just one? Lol, it's a miracle he made it to the end. Good for Gary!

I am also still firmly on Team Fuck Hydra. If they get denied a playoffs spot, I will lay off of them.

Hydra last year used an attachment in its fight against Huge which, while technically legal, basically prevented the bots from actually fighting. It was not a popular.

And Ray (and Tombstone) plays the heel purely for entertainment value. He is apparently the nicest a most helpful guy behind the scenes and is beloved by the other teams. But all shows need a villain.

Oh so Hydra is basically Tornado from Robot Wars.

I mentioned it before that Tornado fucking cheated. They also had interchangeable weapons (wedge, spikes, spinner) but they also had an entire attachment that quadrupled the size of the robot by using a steel frame with a spinner at the end. It was made specifically to defeat one opponent, Razer, and Razer still almost won. It was ridiculous. It is like entering the arena with a completely different robot for a certain opponent.

I dont have a problem with interchangeable weapons and stuff. I think that's great and it brings in a lot of stratgey, but it is not right to have an attachment for a specific opponent, thats just very unsportsmanlike.

Also I feel like half the fights have that Ewert in them. He has had like a dozen different robots enter it feels like.

well, even in the case of an attachment meant for one specific opponent, it can be something that's not unsporstmanlike, and even fun. like The Rakening, where team Hypershock attached a literal rake to Hypershock in order to swat Warrior Clan's drone out of the air, which it did to devastating effect in a probably one in a thousand shot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNk5-3fGNqI

but yeah, the specific nature of Jake Ewert's countermeasure in the match with Huge and how it changed the fight into a mockery is what was so unsportsmanlike about it.

also the Ewerts have a few different teams, but they are all headed up by different family members, Jake is only the captain of Hydra.
