They just got a whole bunch of aircraft from NATO.

Maybe the US should step in.

What better way to make up for our loss in Afghanistan than with a victory over Russia? Victory would be guaranteed since it would be two nations against one -- and Russia is already struggling -- and America would be world heroes.

"I win this war or I destroy the world," probably sounds great in Putin's head.

But how's he realistically going to carry that out? He'd be commanding his people to commit suicide. Unless he personally has access to nuclear launch codes, and direct access to the missiles of his choosing, we won't be seeing nuclear war.

He's not some comic book supervillain that has physical power over all he sees. He's a politician whom people listen to. When he gives an order to destroy life on the surface of his planet, that's when somebody else is going to take over. They're not going to want to live underground for the rest of their lives and for the next three generations of their families.

It looks like he would just raise a middle finger to the world and push his Nuke button if NATO interferes in his personal war.

It seems like we are at the point of him raising his middle finger to the world (including his own country) and it's only a matter of time before nukes are used, regardless of NATO intervention.

UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace told the BBC that the UK had not seen any change yet in the actual posture of Russia's nuclear weapons. That will be watched closely, intelligence sources confirm.

During the Cold War, a huge intelligence machine was created in the West to watch Moscow's nuclear arsenal. Satellites, intercepted communications and other sources were analysed to look for any signs of changes in behaviour - like preparing weapons or crews for bombers - that would offer warning.

Much of that remains in place and the West will be now watching Russian activity closely to understand if there is going to be any significant change in behaviour. There has been no sign, so far.

My point is, Putin is going to do what Putin is going to do and writing off NATO action for fear of him nuking everyone is a zero sum game.

"the danger of nuclear conflict is higher now than it's been in a long time" and "it's only a matter of time before Putin uses a nuke" are not the same sentiment. The second is an immeasurably stupid statement.

People who actually study this stuff for a living all seem to agree that direct military action would be more likely to up the nuclear threat than not. None of them think "it's only a matter of time" until he uses one.

Putin is pretty much a bully picking on a smaller kid while threatening to shoot the bigger kids capable of whooping his ass.

So now the bigger kids are trying to teach the little kid some martial arts to prevent this from turning into a gunfight.

The distinction between "elevated chance of nuclear conflict" and "It's only a matter of time until Putin uses a nuke" is not a semantic one. There is a fucking gulf of difference between those two things. And again, if nukes are what you're worried about, people with actual credibility on the issue think armed conflict will only increase that chance.
