Post 1 aesthetic per post, and you can do another when I rate/rank it.

Examples include grunge, dark academia, cottagecore, etc.

aesthetics.wikia.com is a great source if you can't think of one but it doesn't have to be listed on that site to post.

This is almost ENTIRELY my jam. I love the contrasting colors especially. It's like horror is all around you but within you is peace, tranquility, harmony; you don't let the outside horrors affect you but you don't ignore it either. It's something that travels and stays with you, like something you can't let go of but you remain pure in spite of it all. Love the feeling of this one, but I'm someone who pretty much constantly wears black so it's not the perfect one for me!

While I do enjoy the high-class, stylish nature of this one, especially the intense colors and emphasis on card suits which are just cool symbols on anything, casinos are manipulative and unhealthy for your mental state. I am not a fan of gambling and have no desire to be part of that culture, and a lot of the aesthetic choices lead into a cycling of gambling and spending (more like wasting) your money.

I think I've been obsessed with this for the better part of two years now. It never gets old for me. Every space fills my imagination to the brim, sometimes with horror, sometimes with melancholy, and sometimes with joyous memories and wistful nostalgia. Putting it into words is meaningless though, I think everyone could get something different out of it, or nothing at all. Perhaps an empty space is just an empty space; perhaps someone's childhood home is just that; but I like to think that places hold power - our memories echo on every wall, yet others' experiences fill up pages worth of history, not gone, but waiting to be discovered again just beyond every dry wall, blank office light, or ugly brown carpet.

A bit of a rare one here, not too much to go on from what I can find, BioShock being a premier example (though that game mixes many different aesthetics to great effect). I think the idea of it is nice, but it's a bit too similar to other aesthetics I've seen like Steampunk and Solarpunk. A whole water based society would probably just get tedious after awhile.

This is an interesting one. You think ghosts, oh this just focuses on death and horror, but no there's actually an element of comedy to this one too. I like that actually being scared of ghosts plays a factor into it and it isn't just like "Oh, ghosts are cool and I like the creepy pictures". There's tangible interactivity to the aesthetic. Still, the actual content of this aesthetic is just dull to me. With exceptions, I generally don't find ghosts all that interesting and each image is repetitive and derivative of one idea beaten to death.

Hyperpop has produced some of the craziest music in the last few years ago, a genre growing in popularity ever so steadily with artists like 100gecs and Charli XCX in particular leading the charge. It's not what I choose to listen to most of the time, but I do enjoy some of the genre's most recognizable tracks. In particular, I appreciate the genre's focus on the internet age and creating this stuff independently, as well as being very inclusive with the LGBT community latching on to this genre quite tightly. It's a bit punk, it's a bit alternative, and has the kind of ADHD mainstream appeal that is perfect for everything constantly vying for our attention at all times. If I had a complaint about this one, it's that I don't think it necessarily has a strong visual identity yet and still remains primarily a musical genre more than a whole aesthetic onto its own.

Vaporwave

On paper, this shouldn't work. It's a mishmash of ideas and specific iconography that don't gel well together at all, like marble statues, checkerboard floors, 80s cityscapes, Arizona cans, 90s computer tech, Japanese ads... or so you would you think! It IS exactly that mishmash that is why its so successful, for me anyway. Again, like Hyperpop, this is an internet focused one to be sure, but where the former focuses on our mental hyperactivity in the internet age, Vaporwave instead takes a look back to a simpler, more nostalgic time, boiling the internet down to concepts that are sparse and fleeting, bought and sold with little care or thought put into it. It's supposedly a criticism of overly capitalistic societies, and you can spot it in some images to be sure (and the focus on 80s culture is no accident), but I always found it too esoteric to be successful in the regard. And to be clear, that does not hurt the aesthetic for me at all, because I always found the nostalgic portion of it more interesting anyway. I've never lived in the 80s, I've never used Windows 95, but I DO drink Arizona Iced Tea, and that's the great thing about this one, is that there's something for everyone to like. It's very amorphous, which is the point, it's to be looked at and disposed of, and I think the music is just so sweet, so relaxing, and so creatively striking, it's some of my favorite stuff to listen to in recent years and really spring-boarded my interest in stuff like Japanese jazz, city pop, and even jazz fusion. Cool stuff!

Well, it's not the 1/10 you hoped for, but man is this one played out. This is easily one of the most popular aesthetics out there and has been for a long time (anyone else remember the "Steampunk Gender Swapped Joker in a Willy Wonka Hat" thing?). Steampunk has cool aspects - an emphasis on traditional machinery, lots of gears and gadgetry working in plain sight, but the fashion of it is so corny and impractical. Stripey pants, monocles, weird neck brace things, it's just such an uncomfortable look and then you have to be miserable using steam technology as well on top of that. Look, Steampunk peaked with the Thief series and nothing is going to be better than that, so why should I even care about this aesthetic anymore?

Art nouveau

7/10

Characterized by rich beauty and intricate, ornate backgrounds, art nouveau is a striking art style. It almost feels too rich for my blood, like some forbidden land where only the upper crust circles are allowed in to - exclusivity. This gives it a sense of allure seen rarely in other aesthetics. At the same time, it also feels extremely hokey. Most of the artwork gives me the feel of being peddled at the renaissance faire. Art nouveau feels like a gimmick from another time. Outdated, but still pretty to look at nevertheless.

Similar to vaporwave in many ways, Synthwave nevertheless has its own unique identity, to be sure, most often categorized with wireframe landscapes and speeding 80s sports cars shooting off into the distance. It's one of the more fantastical aesthetics we have looked at so far. I like the sense of almost front-facing nostalgia, which is obviously contrary to how it usually works. The aesthetic is 80s based, but it uses past ideas to depict a future of an alternate timeline where nothing from the past 20 years were adopted in favor of using 80s technology instead. It's also one of the best genres of music aesthetics too, with synthwave being a staple of most 80s horror films like The Thing or The Keep and still used to amazing effect today in films like You're Next, It Follows, and Under the Skin. I jam that shit like it's going out of style. One complaint I have is the color palette and general design of synthwave is a little samey, but hell it's something that pretty much always looks cool so, I guess it's a non-issue.

Yeah this is pretty easily a 1/10. I am NO fan of clowns. Plus the attitude and actions of this aesthetic doesn't jive with me. I'm very much a chill, relaxed person and the party culture surrounding Juggalos is not my vibe. Now, I do enjoy some Horrorcore music but I've never really liked ICP which is basically what Juggalos revolve around so it's a wash ultimately.
