I was lost so many times due to wonky dialogue and scenes jumping between things so suddenly, but everything pretty much made sense at the end.

It came out yesterday, but pre-order people got it 3 days early, so I've been playing since Tuesday. It's just a side-story/prequel/spinoff thing, though, so not super ambitious, but it's fun.

I guess it's more like DMC, but I've not played either it or Dark Souls.

Goofy dialogue and acting, but in a sort of charming way. Goes from you enjoying it ironically to actually kinda respecting it? Jack is a hilarious FF protagonist.

The gameplay is really fun though. And the music is way better than it has any right to be. Loved the level designs too.

It's actually a surprisingly charming experience. Dialogue, again, is really goofy and the plot feels disjointed, but it all comes together by the end and it pays nice homage to the other mainline FF games along the way. And the combat is solid.

The graphics are really janky at times, though, and apparently it looks like garbage on PC. One area you're in the mountains, and if you look out at the surrounding countryside it looks like a background from a PS2 game.

And nope, never played Nioh lol

It was very challenging. Even in easy mode, I was dying. But I'm also not a very good gamer.
My friend who plays Elden Ring had a much better grasp at the combat.

As far as the job stuff goes, there's a lot of jobs, but I didn't try out that many and stuck to what I liked, but they were all fun. You can hit a button to auto equip whatever your best gear as at the time, so I just stuck to doing that. As I was trying to get through the story, I haven't really delved too deep into all that stuff yet.

No, it's just a bunch of locations on an overworld map. You move the cursor around the map and click on the level you want to drop into.

All the levels are decently sized though, and not just corridors -- although some "puzzles" really just amount to "the key to this locked door is literally in the adjacent room." It's not super big brain stuff, but it's not awful.

Jack Garland's gang are all amnesiacs who only want to kill Chaos, like the Warriors of Light are prophecised to do, and go on a journey to find clues about how to do that. Jack doesn't care about his amnesia since memories will just get in the way of killing Chaos, but the others kinda do. Their journey invovles restoring light to the four elemental crystals that stabilize the planet - fire, wind, earth, water. Every dungeon is based on another mainline FF game, the locations ripped from those other games' "dimensions."

Each crystal is guarded by a Fiend - Tiamat, Marilith, Lich, Kraken - and every time one is defeated, the members of Jack's gang start getting flashbacks of their past lives. If you've been reading the secret reports you find in dungeons, you'll slowly piece together that everyone in Jack's group are unwitting servants of some old race that disappeared from the planet a long time ago called the Lufenians. The Lufenians want to create a paradise and have had Strangers (people like Jack's group) help stabilize the light and darkness in the world for them, a process that's taken ages, and every time something goes wrong they use their technology to "reset" the world and start the experiment over again. That's why Jack's gang all have amnesia -- their memories are wiped with every reset. The Fiends you fought are your party members from previous resets that left behind echos of their darkness, and it's why defeating them triggered flashbacks in everyone. Everyone in Jack's party pieces this together....at some point(?) Not really sure when, this part was hard to follow.

Jack's gang learns of this, and that their drive to "kill Chaos" was nothing but conditioning implanted to get them to follow through with their mission. But the mission to create a utopia for the Lufenians involves wiping out all the humans of Cornelia, and Jack doesn't like the Lufenians playing god with everyone. Turns out that in a previous reset, Jack set up a Light Yagami gambit that'll keep Cornelia away from the Lufenian's control and give humanity their freedom. His friends sacrifice themselves to make Jack fall to despair and take on the title of Chaos himself, at which point he storms the dimension where the Lufenians oversee the experiment and fuck their shit up (this involves fighting the actual manifestation of Chaos) so they lose the ability to keep resetting the world, promising to one day return to wipe them all out.

Your party members, now the 4 Fiends, whisk Jack away 2000 years into the past to safety. Without the Lufenians, it's up to Jack's group to look out for the balance of light and dark in the world, and since their combined darkness is so great, they plan to have the Warriors of Light defeat them one day to help bring the light back to Cornelia.

2000 years later, Jack (Garland is the main villain of FF1) kidnaps the princess of Cornelia, prompting the FF1 Warriors of Light to show up and stop him, setting off the events of the original game.

There's side missions for almost every dungeon, and it unlocks a new difficulty (which apparently isn't very fun lol). Other than that, there's just unlocking all the jobs, collecting all the reports, and maybe some other minor things I haven't bothered with.

Uhhh there are machines that shoot you? Didn't pay attention to enemy names though. But I don't think so.

teep_ posted...

Enemies have an HP gauge and a Break gauge. If you beat the enemy up until their Break gauge breaks you can auto kill them with Jack's special attack. Otherwise, just deplete their HP like normal.

Blocking slowly depletes your own break gauge though, but it recovers. For the most part, combat incentivizes blocking and placement, and not rushing in swinging (like I do). Some enemy attacks can be "caught" by Jack if you block them properly, and now Jack can use them back at them, with limited uses.

There's multiple ways of fighting, with swords, maces, fists, etc, and every class aligns with at least one type of weapon. You level up classes in an ability tree that looks like the one from FF15, and all the stronger classes are unlocked through this.

Every class has combo abilities you can set, unlocked through the ability tree. There are usually around 7 combos, triggered by the order and amount you hit the attack buttons (ex. X+R1, X+X+R1, hold X+R1, etc). You can remap your buttons however you like. These abilities consume your MP.

Jack also has other abilities set to the D-pad that do things that grant him boosts or imbue a toxin effect to his weapon for a limited time. I usually forget these things are there. They also consume MP.

If you're using a class that has magic, you hold down whatever button you have abilities set to and a magic wheel will pop up where you can select the magic you want to cast. It's similar to the wheel in Horizon Zero Dawn. Holding down the button will charge spells to -ra and -ga levels before you cast them. And you'll never believe it, but spells consume MP as well.

You get equipment from enemy drops, and break down repeat equipment for parts to upgrade the better equipment. Just press the auto equip button in the menu to equip whatever the best gear you have to Jack.

Your party members just fight alongside you, they aren't controllable, but they unlock better jobs the most side quests you do.

I think that's it?

I have no intention of completing every mission on Chaos difficulty or grinding for lv 300 equipment. Yeah idk why they revealed that in a trailer.
Basically, a bunch of people in the west online figured out that he was Garland from the first trailer, and so rather than continuing advertising based on the mystery of who Jack is, they decided to advertise so that you'll find out WHY he's who he is. That said, the initial teaser trailer kinda did make enough hints that I can see how people figured it out immediately.

Oh yeah, I remember that.

Still kinda wack though. I feel like they should've just doubled down on not revealing that, like how Spider-Man No Way Home refused to show Tobey and Andrew despite everywhere already guessing they were gonna show up.

Still. Doesn't hurt the final product much at all, since it's obvious enough from the start who he is anyway.
