What exactly is going on with Microsoft and Playground Games Fable reboot? The game was announced nearly two years ago, and rumors it was in development surfaced two years before that, so shouldnt we have seen something beyond a very basic teaser? It feels like development is progressing rather slowly for a studio that pumps out massive open-world Forza Horizon games on a very regular basis, and it seems we may now have some insight into why.
Game designer Juan Fernandez has bounced around various studios, including Rime developer Tequila Works, Hellblade creators Ninja Theory, and a stint at Playground Games where he worked on the new Fable. Perhaps unsurprisingly, in an interview with Vandal (translation provided by Google, so forgive any stiff phrasing) Fernandez reveals Playground had some trouble adapting to making an open-world game where you dont blast around in fancy cars at 200 mph.

I, for one, am shocked.

A lot of Xbox studios are having development problems. I'm still dumbfounded at how MS greenlit Rare's upcoming project despite them literally only making a trailer for it.

I think it was a weird decision to give it to Playground. An exciting prospect but of course development wouldn't go super smoothly.

Definitely a weird dev to give it to. But also, Microsoft has Obsidian doing Avowed, and then in a couple years (probably after 2026) they'll have Elder Scrolls 6. It doesn't seem they're hurting on western medieval fantasy RPGs.

Fable is so generic, why does it need a reboot?

How many times in Fable 3 did they talk about Thunder or Jack of Blades?

They got halfway through development before they realized that the L was actually an i in the title and now they have to go back and rework everything.

Series should stay dead. It belongs to Peter Molyneux and it's his vision. He's a lost cause at this point and thinking any studio can takeover someone elses ideas and vision is a mistake.

I guess it shouldn't be that surprising that a company known for open world racing games is progressing slowly on developing an RPG.

I am kind of disappointed though. I've wanted a new Fable game for a long time, so the announcement was super exciting to me.

Eh I skipped Fable 3 after the intro. I wasn't a fan. I wouldnt mind just a bigger Fable 1 with maybe a more cohesive story and maybe more dungeons.

If this new fable is actually open-world then you'll probably get a horse. Maybe you'll even be able to upgrade to a horse-drawn carriage. Then all you need to hope is that the devs go full "fun" and make the horse/carriage control like a race car and not like an actual horse.

Yea, it'd be "immersion breaking", but who would cancel a pre-order just because you can drift around corners on a horse?

I still remember the hype about the first Fable. It was supposed to be a massive open world game with hyper realistic features and an evolving world and tons of playtime.
And then they were like "here's the game, you're confined to a set path by plants and tiny streams, NPCs are pretty generic and you'll beat it in about 8 hours"
Morrowind came out later and proved that Fable could have been way better even with the limitations of the Xbox... But it was still kind of fun.

Morrowind came out later and proved that Fable could have been way better even with the limitations of the Xbox... But it was still kind of fun.

I never looked into the hype for the OG so I went in blind and thought it was solid. But I can see how some people got Cyberpunk'd

Almost. Morrowind came out nearly 2 years before Fable did. But yeah, people did hype up Fable as an improvement over Morrowind, and came up short in pretty much everything but combat

Fable 3 was actually pretty good. I liked how the story played out.

I do wonder how far out the release date will be, if they're progressing slow. I was originally hoping they'd show up at E3 (or some digital conference around that time) with a end of the year release date.

Oh I didn't know that. Maybe it was released on the Xbox after Fable

You might be thinking about Oblivion. One of the Bethesda devs said they were scared as hell of Fable cause it was being hyped during the early stages of Oblivion development. And then it came out and they were like "oh nvm".

But yeah, even then Morrowind was already out and it did most of that shit better than Fable.

I still love Fable 1. I was a kid not on the internet, and to me it was that game. I didn't know of or need the hype. I hadn't played MW or Oblivion and Fable fucking blew my mind.

I remember seeing some advertainment on G4TV. I for the long time thought Fable like that too. That is until I played Oblivion and then Fable 2. I quickly realize how ungodly small and short Fable is, especially Fable 2.
