Nobody but progressives is really woke and only in terms of policies. Im as progressive as they come and yet I could care less about the cultural BS.

This. People define "woke" very differently.

Yes, it's pretty much just fake enlightenment, I know it's generally associated with sjw types now but I still imagine idiots after they just came down off of hallucinogens that act like it opened their 3rd eye. The ironic lack of self awareness fits perfectly with sjws too.

I would think it's typically defined as being aware of the inherent unfairness deliberately constructed into how society functions, or as being a cuck.

Honestly, in spite of all the people saying there's too many different versions of the word, I'd say there's only really three definitions for it, and two of them are basically the same (and both are pretty much synonymous with how SJW gets used).

The first definition is the insulting one. It's the one people use to make fun of the insane virtue signaling assholes who are on their bitter crusade to get ridiculously offended over minor bullshit, dredge up old history, never really forgive or forget, and generally preach tolerance and acceptance when they're some of the most intolerant motherfuckers you'll ever meet. The sort of people who essentially act like the moral and ethical high-ground is their default position, and then insult, belittle, or harass anyone who disagrees with their perspective - and then turn around and claim the other person is the close-minded one. You're not "progressive", you're "woke". You're not "enlightened", you're a "SJW". You're not better than the people you criticize, you're worse.

The second definition is the one the "woke" unironically use for themselves - namely the perception of being enlightened and advanced citizens of the world who have transcended racism and sexism and bigotry in general, and now go out of their way to seek out and condemn all intolerance and prejudice to make the world a better place. The sort of person who "woke up" to see the world as it really is, rather than being lulled to sleep like all the other sheeple. But the only people who really use woke as a self-description are the sort of assholes who are being made fun of by the first definition - so I'd say these two are effectively the same definition, even if the two different types of person using them would never agree.

The third version is just when people dismiss any sort of discussion of social politics or civil rights or equality issues as being "woke bullshit", but that's sort of like how the Internet has turned the definition of the word "troll" into "anyone who disagrees with me". It doesn't really mean anything, and it just sort of indicates that the person using it that way is probably kind of an idiot, and you can safely ignore whatever they have to say because it's not going to be worthwhile anyway.

The types of behavior the first two definitions are describing is definitely bad, and will probably be one of the major things people in the future shit on when they look back at this era and talk about how everyone in the early 21st century was kind of a fuckwit. With the third definition, the person using the term "woke" is probably worse than whatever they're accusing of being "woke", but they're also devaluing the word itself.

I do think it's stupid to say you can't criticize a movie because it's 'not made for you'. I mean, a LOT of movies are made with a specific audience in mind and saying someone couldn't rate that old D&D movie because they weren't a D&D player at the time (and thusly part of the 'target audience') is stupid. Otherwise yea.

There's a lot that goes into 'being woke' that causes problems. It's not about representing women and minorities and the like; it's about how they're represented. Especially since a lot of these people say/do things that would be utterly horrifying if it happened the other way around and/or immensely over-react to anything that doesn't fit the defined narrative. It's not representing minorities or the like, it's being a raving fanatic and engaging in political witch-hunts.

Yes being woke is bad. I'd like to sleep forever instead and stay in my dreams.
At least in my dreams I would've maybe been slightly happier than IRL.

To be fair, I was a roleplayer at the time and I still thought it was a terrible movie.

If anything, the people who played D&D probably thought it was more stupid than the average layperson did. Like how the people who've actually played video games are the ones most likely to point out how terrible video game movies are and how they get everything wrong.

I prefer to be woke than sleeping.

I said this before in another topic and I'll say it here.

We were better in the 90s. The moral messaging in black movies and gang films was superior to the bullshit they're running now. Some of which is completely contradicting it.

The woke or wherever it was back then was a lot more sane and civilized. Today it's just unhinged and getting into levels beyond absurdity.

Personally, I think we were starting to get along and the politicians saw that so they had to move the goalposts on what's racist and -ist in general to rejuvenate the hate and division in order to recapture the migrating voting blocks.

1. I never claimed to be woke, even at the time, and never went around acting like I was better than everyone else
2. I do admit I was pretty cringey in the past with a lot of things, I like to think I'm better now at 28 than when I was 19 (even if I still do sometimes, but I'm trying to get better)

I disagree cause it seems like it's that they're all TOO willing to do something. Like 'this guy said a bad word thirty years ago; we should ban and condemn him for it!' or, more recently, trying to condemn a game that beat another game 'with a strong and empowered female' (Elden Ring and Horizon). Someone doesn't support something they like, the reason why or if they're right or not doesn't matter; all that matters is condemning them, shunning them, getting them fired, etc.

I'm not a grammar nazi, but 'woke' is such poor grammar that I assumed it was always meant to be an insulting term.

It's just the pendulum swinging to the other end of this whole crazy tribalism thing the world adopted.

Yes. Not because anti bigotry is a bad thing, but because the way they go about it is hateful, hypocritical, pompous, and divisive. You can be all for equal rights without acting like a holier-then-thou ass-hat. Hopefully some of them'll mature a bit, come around to a less rigid state of mind, and start learning to walk in shades of grays.

"Woke" is basically just the modern day equivalent of "Bible Thumping," with essentially all the same identical baggage and responses from supporters/detractors, minus the direct religious overtones.

It really depends on what you mean when you say "woke."

That word has no meaningful application. It's just a pejorative.

This trend concept of awake is really just a series of a bunch of stupid people trying to prove that they are more awake and offended by something than the next group of people claiming to be awake while the whole time every more extreme step misses the original point of Actual real offensive or wrong behavior or scenario so that it ultimately dilutes real scenarios and claims of injustice because it gives the media perception that everyone is always complaining about everyone.

in short its like when they first boy cries wolf when there is an actual wolf, the second boy cries werewolf when they see a pet dog and the third boy cries dragon when they see a dragonfly.

thus the village ignores the actual wolf in favor of the much more outlandish claims of the other two boys whose sole pourpose is to outdo the first boy and subsequently the second boy by trying to prove their own value to themselves in how much more sensitive they are.

this is what the awake culture. Has become. As opposed to just simply being sensitive to and calling out injustice and inequality.
