Religion has the power of tradition on its side, but I'm not aware of anyone who actually preaches to their children that there are people out there who can talk to the dead. Is it because widespread religious belief "normalizes" the possibility of the supernatural that this happens?

The non-religious are sometimes subject to this particular breed of superstition, which may suggest religion isn't the problem, but I don't know.

Why do people think that some people can talk to the dead, CE?

Anyone can speak with the dead, the tricky part is getting them to reply.

There is an overlap between religious people and conspiracy theorists, but I don't know if spirit mediums connect to that. Probably depends on exactly what you mean. Those TV mediums definitely relied on religious insecurities.

As we grow older and people we love start dying people look for answers. People want resolution that can't realistically be given. But people will always exist to offer an answer and that's where mediums come in.

Of course the reason for religion existing is similar. I think spirituality and religion come from the same roots but will always exist. People want to believe there's something more.
