It has been awhile since I read it and can't remember it clearly but I was pretty unhappy about it as well at the time.

It's pretty odd but not really that bad. However, I will never forgive him for the end of The Dark Tower. Seven god damn books building up to a wombo combo of back to back horseshit.

I did like the epilogue though.

I actually don't hate the very ending of the Dark Tower which is what I think most people dislike, but I don't really love the getting there.

Is that supposed to be offensive? because to me...it wasn't. It's a novel, ffs.

Or were you just highlighting how exaggerated that ending was?

When did he say that it was offensive? He just said it was bad. And deus ex machina is generally accepted to be a bad way to end things and that's usually not even as literal as God actually factually no-argument about it reaching down and killing the bad guy.

He didn't but the post I quoted (not the OP) seemed a little ambiguous, so I was just preemptively trying to ward that off I guess.

Having watched Clannad recently, I agree. I prefer media that has the balls to actually maintain stakes.

Honestly, I'm OK with how it ended. The indication is pretty clear that, while cyclic in nature, Roland was eventually fated to win against both the Crimson King and the Tower its self. My complaint with the Dark Tower series is how badly it jumped up its own ass starting with around the end of book 5. Completely abandoned its low-fantasy post-apocalyptic setting to just become more and more meta. Hated it

The backstory and buildup is my favorite part tbh. I think the book definitely starts getting worse when they all get to Boulder.

I'm forced to agree. The road trip, the pandemic are where the meat of the book's good stuff is

While I'm not normally a fan of a deus ex machina ending, I actually don't mind it so much in The Stand because God/Gan/The White (however you want to interpret it with King's lore) has played a fairly significant role in the story up to that point already, albeit in a hitherto passive way, so it's not a full-on asspull, and the symbolism of God wiping away the sinners once Larry and Ralph are crucified is in keeping with the themes of the novel.

Honestly, my bigger problem with the ending is that the book goes on for fucking ages after. By the time we're delving into the political makeup of the Free Zone after the main events and so on, exhaustion is definitely setting in. It's a long book, the main plot is wrapped up, let us go home, Steve.

Where are people getting that God literally did it? I finished reading this book a few days ago and did not pick up on that. Some vague fate/ higher power stuff which was running through the whole book but not, like, a hand reaching down from the clouds.

Agreed. This book is pretty much all about good versus evil. If there was no mention of God or Satan in the book at all I would hate the ending but this book is full of that stuff.

I read it when I was younger...like maybe 10th-11th grade (?). It was my first big dive into an adult novel so I totally didn't pick up on the themes of good and evil, I just enjoyed the story. So when I got to the end...I was so confused...

He's not great at endings.

I remember cutting the epilogue of the dark tower out of the book and warning everyone against reading it.

Nowadays I mean.. I guess it's alright but fuck if I didn't hate it then.

Maybe i would enjoy it more now. But throughout the book i wanted King to just get to the point (main story not the background) and then he did... in the most succinct way possible.

It was also one of the books that led me to think that King is overated. I heard so much talk about him growing up and Star ed with The Shining and a few other big names that i enjoyed. Moving onto The Stand and some from the mid-2000s turned me off.

Since then i tend to read non-fiction books on science, history, philosophy religion etc. Thats more my alley
