Remember when you could just make a fansite? And other people who were also looking for a community in that specific thing would find it?

I know Marilland still exists as a website, but who the fuck uses it over Serebii? I remember in like 07/08 around Gen 4, that guy SWORE he would have the more popular website.

my first forum experience outside of Neopets was The3Eds (first called Los3Eds), but Neopets is dead and digging their grave further with NFT shit instead of blind toy boxes, and The3Eds has scattered to the winds.

Serebii really hasn't been that relevant for a long time. Joe is basically paid by TPCI to keep the site running. If anything Glitch City Labs was the "big" fansite for me, but that had to die because one of their more prominent members hacked Microsoft's servers.
I haven't really been to any fansites in years. It's not like I wouldn't want to, they just don't really exist anymore. Too much risk on the webmaster. My alternative has basically become /vg/ because the communities on there are tight knit and you can have the sick bants, but it's nothing like the height of fansites. Like I don't think I will ever find a replacement for The Undersquare or Zybez because that kind of site is in the past.

Now its much easier to make a subreddit, which is also easier to find than a specific site, especially with how the search engines work now. For a particular site youd need to hear about it word of mouth or see advertising for it, something most fan sites cant afford.

I only know of one still active webring and it was created out of necessity.
And I actually visit one of the sites on that webring daily/weekly.

Flamestryke's domain was pretty good too if you liked the Might & Magic games, although I think the person that made it died.

Bulbapedia has way too much fluff if you're just looking for level up moves and whatnot. Definitely better for specific mechanics and that kinda thing though.

Zelda Dungeon is still pretty big. I'm guessing you're defining a fansite as not being a wiki or a reddit page.

Isn't GameFAQs technically a fansite? It's very broad, but still.

There are countless large fansites around. That's not counting things like the "fandom" sites which partly replace it. Hell, Pokemon alone has dozens of sites.

Plus most of the large fansites that were around still are, but they're just smaller volume.
