There was no experience like it before when it came out. You had the ability to walk around this big 3D city and do whatever the hell you wanted. You see a cool car you like? Go steal it and drive it around! Some NPC looked at you funny? Shoot him with a shotgun cuz why not! Wanna just play taxi driver? Take a cab and do just that! The city truly felt alive and had this really cool atmosphere, which the real life music and radio talk shows just added to it. And it felt like there was always something fun to do, either from the missions, the side activities, or even just you fucking around with the world.

Even reviewers who got a preview of it knew it was gonna be fucking big
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ED8QDtjwTU

GTA3 really was a huge milestone in games. It was an amazing experience to play back when it came out, and even now if you can adjust to it.

What was it like for you? >_>

I made the mistake of playing Vice City first, so when I got to GTA3, I was a bit underwhelmed. Its like playing Super Mario Bros 1 for the first time after playing SMB3. But just about everything you said about GTA3 could be applied to VC.

It was something special. I had played 1 and 2, but learning there was going to be a 3D GTA game was amazing. The trailer for it was awesome.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUi3davvBmM

I had to wait a little bit before I got it, so when it finally came out, friends at school would talk about it and all the crazy things you could do made the hype for me even worse. I could only picture it all in my head. I think I even had dreams where I was playing it, but the TV screen was black. I had the same kind of dream about 4 too. I still remember finally getting it and playing it for the first time and it was absolutely amazing.

3 things iirc:
-they clipped the wings off the dodo plane so you couldnt fly it as much or into buildings
-they changed the LCPD colors from looking just like NYPD colors to their own thing
-They took out Darkel's missions where it was a homeless domestic terrorist that would give you missions like blowing up bombs next to people and such

This game was released like a month after 9/11, so it was pretty much done by that point. idk if they delayed it or not because of that

When I was a kid, I didn't know pc system requirement was a thing.

Got my uncle to buy it for me and it wouldn't run on my potato pc. Thought it was a defect, returned it for another copy and it still wouldn't run. Then finally refunded it.

I still face palm myself to this day every time I think about this memory.

Which brings me back to this topic, I still haven't played gta 3.

That kinda was my experience with San Andreas, except the game was a DVD and my computer only had a CD drive. So I was like "why the fuck won't this game run!? 3 and VC ran just fine!". Once I figured it out, I had to buy an external DVD drive to install and run it lol

Something I wanted to mention, I think people sleep on the soundtrack. No, it doesn't have all the great popular songs we all known and love, but it set the mood and atmosphere of the world well, I think. I love how diverse GTA's soundtracks are. They've introduced me to so many different genres. 3 got me into opera, reggae, and various forms of electronic/techno/EDM/etc. music.

considering I played Driver 2
I remember this game blowing my fucking mind, too. It was the first driving game I ever played where the character could actually get out of their car. That was huge at the time, even though the top-down GTA games had been doing it since 1997.

Also I always loved the first Driver for its realism in following the rules of the road. Run a red light? Get busted. Forget your turn signal? Busted. It was the perfect game to play with friends, passing the controller, seeing who could drive the longest without losing their patience and getting run down by the cops.

I also loved Driver 2 back then. Me and my best friend would play it for hours. We got to the very last level, but couldn't beat it though. Still, GTA 3 blew it out of the water. It even made fun of Driver/Tanner. I liked back then how all those open world crime games would take shots at each other.

Gaming is in the dark ages at the moment.
