That's not my problem with the film -- although I do have a problem with DC's reluctance to put Darkseid in a live action movie. My problem is simply bringing the characters to Earth. If you're in the desert, it's a desert planet. If you're in a grass field, it's a medieval village. You can do a magical fantasy planet for cheap. Bringing the action to the suburb just placed it in a very boring setting. The fight with Beast Man and that bald guy with the whip would have been far more entertaining if the backdrop had been a forest instead of a high school. When they're on Eternia, it's fun. When they're in suburbia, the film drags. Beast Master captured a sense of magic and adventure despite the low budget. I never forgot I was in a world of magic where anything could happen so long as the budget permitted.
