Potara is a more perfect form of fusion, which I always took to mean more powerful, but apparently the power levels are the same for Vegito and Gogeta at any given moment. Potara is permanent, but even that was retconned in Super, its only permanent for godly beings.

Super throws a wrench into this with the revelation that Potara isnt permanent for mortals, only Kais and above get it for good. GT continues to be the black sheep where its permanent.

Im biased though. Gogeta always seemed cooler to me. Vegito is good but I dislike how cocky he gets, similar to Gohans sadistic sprees, which has lead him to prolong fights too much.

One theory about why Gogeta is stronger is that Goku and Vegta have to sync their power levels so its a cleaner fusion. Where Potara is more forced.

The earrings are easier to perform.

Screwing up fusion dance leads to a time sinking nerf.

Iirc anyone can fuse by earrings. But fusion dance has to be people around the same level. Its why Goten and Trunks were choosen.

Dance is temporary and can fuck up is not done properly
Potara earrings are supposedly permanent
Vegito smugness > Gogeta seriousness

A big difference is the outfit of the fusion. Dance has that stupid jacket

Dance fusions all wear the same outfit. Potara fusions also merge the outfits of the fusees.

That's the only difference that really matters, because it makes Potara fusion superior by default.

Pretty much this. He had a few punchlines in Broly but he didn't fuck around overwhelming Broly. He would have worked the living crap out of Jiren too.

I prefer Gogeta's design.

There's no evidence Vegetto is weaker though. The two times he fights he was dicking around the first time and the second time he was fighting someone immortal who had to be erased from existence by Zenos. Gogeta is just more serious which is completely out of character for both Goku and Vegeta.

Edit: The latest info about fusion is that they're equally matched trump cards.

It was kind of a soft retcon, since it was never actually verified that the "weird air" inside of Buu was the cause for the separation in the first place, just a theory.

The fact we had back then was that it was claimed by one of the highest ranked persons in the universe, why would we not believe that?

As of Super, it's mostly just convenience. Dance requires prep time, earrings are instant but require having them on the fusing parties. It was rather stupid to get rid of the permanence aspect. They easily could have had a mini-arc where Vegito was the MC until they could unfuse him with Dragon Balls.

Turns out that since Super was introduced he was never as high as we thought he was. Plus, dude was constantly wrong all the time anyways. He had no idea what the saiyans could do and he had no idea the z-sword contained an elder god.

People in the franchise are wrong like all the freaking time.
