so they can't use the name since they don't own it ...
has nothing to do with jks anti Trans rhetoric. if they truly had a problem with it they would stop playing a game which she literally created.

I assume the irl version doesn't have the snitch?

Since that is the dumbest thing that makes the rest of the game and more than half the players meaningless 99.9% of the time.

I went to visit one of my friends about a decade ago and he was on the quidditch team at his university. I actually went to one of their practices and observed it. it was... odd.

iirc a player is designated to be the snitch, and its value is a lot lower?

Bleh. Better off completely removing that stupid aspect of the game.

i mean i think the idea is you're trying to keep a semblance to the sport as described in the novels

i suspect some players now no longer are even necessarily fans of the books/movies. it's an athletic competition with probably slightly less high-level opposition. which seems reasonable interesting if you're a good athlete!

I'd say it still has a semblance if you have the three rings as goals and the bludgers being hit at people.

Rowling just created a broken sport because it was literally designed to have a main character that is always the most important player and hero of the game.

Also, if you're 150+ points behind, as seeker you are actively not meant to play the game.

Quidditch is a poorly designed sport, written to amuse children.

at that point your goal would be to prevent the other seeker from obtaining the snitch until your team can bring the game within reach.

Are there any real-life sports where a comeback from 15 goals down is plausible? The Golden Snitch is stupid, but the losing seeker being irrelevant in a massive blowout isn't part of it.

In basketball, you can score up to nine points at a time (as opposed to the more common 1/2/3-pointers) if you shoot the ball from specific circular spots that randomly appear on the court. These spots are well-guarded though, so usually players will wait until they're on fire.

One of the things that made the Chicago Bulls dynasty so amazing in the '90s was that they didn't use a single one of those point-enhancing spots while playing basketball in the decade where these were first introduced. Also, if you check the stats from their NBA Finals, the Utah Jazz was never able to score more than three points in a single basket. This really spoke to the defensive strength of the Bulls having both Jordan and Rodman -- two former Defensive Player of the Year award-winners. I'm surprised The Last Dance didn't touch on those stats.

Can't think of another real-life example.

Joanne Rowling is an absolute garbage human being, but I separate that from JK Rowling the writer. She was inexperienced when she created the sport. Quidditch was never meant to be something people actually played - it was for sensational heroism, nothing more. I don't think she spent long designing it. But she felt locked into the ruleset she'd created in Philosopher's Stone, and, as she evolved as a writer and the books became more young adult, Quidditch became largely irrelevant. I think she also ran out of ideas for it, similar to how Pokemon battles get redundant.

That said, them wanting to separate themselves from her by simply changing the name of their version of the sport isn't enough. They should ditch the broomsticks, too. And this is coming from someone who hasn't given a shit about Harry Potter in a decade, in large part because of its creator's constant attention-seeking and... the worse stuff.

They actually use broomsticks? Oh my god, that is so incredibly dumb. I naively thought that the name change was because they were trying to be taken seriously as more of a legitimate sport. Clearly that isn't the case at all.

I thought there was some kind of sun spell that allowed them to breathe naturally. Think Banjo-Tooie. When in doubt... just think it's magic and call it a day.

Im almost certain this is the canon explanation, because in FFX-2, Yuma has simply learned how to stay underwater for minutes without problem.

Yeah they just hold their breaths. It's been years since I've played FFX but I think there's even an underwater dungeon that you can only take like half the party into, right? (The Blitzballers + Rikku, IIRC)

in the context of a fantasy world, being able to hold your breath for 30 minutes is functionally the same as breathing underwater- it's magic

there's no point in arguing about it tho

She spends time between games training to hold her breath, as seen in Eternal Calm.
