Make it some other planet's problem!

It's not like the rocket has a chance of exploding and dispersing nuclear waste all over the place, right? >_>

Depending on the specific type of waste, one rocket exploding in the upper atmosphere could be devastating. Accidents don't happen often, but they do happen.

Maybe someday well have the technology to launch our trash out of the solar system. Space is such a giant, empty void that it would never even interact with any other celestial bodies.

I mean, it's not just that you have to launch the shit up into orbit. You have to launch it so far out it escapes the Earth's gravitational pull entirely.

I think people are putting way to much thought into this, just the store the waste per usual until we inevitably figure out a proper means for dealing with it.

I feel like by the time we've advanced enough to make launching nuclear waste into space an effective solution, we will have already invented some other method of rendering nuclear waste harmless on Earth. Or we may even have found a use for it.

Load a rocket with nuclear waste.

Rocket launches

There's some sort of accident akin to the Space Shuttles Challenger or Columbia.

Rocket explodes in the upper atmosphere

Congrats you've just covered most of North America in radioactive material

Real answer: We've already solved the issue with nuclear waste. Nuclear waste bins are safe enough to lick if that's your kink.

To launch anything into space (cheaply) we first need to build a slingshot that relies on the Earth's rotation. Which is doable with today's tech. It would be lacrosse, but on a bigger scale.

No

  1. It would cost a fortune
  2. If it exploded it would spread nuclear waste everywhere
  3. Filling space with dangerous debris is a bad idea
There is no long term solution to Nuclear Waste

Project Orion was about making a space rocket that was propelled by exploding nukes behind it.
The first concept even did it for leaving Earth.

Project A119 was about blowing a nuke on the moon. The flash would be seen from Earth and raise the American morale because Soviet kicked Americas ass in space.

As others have said, launching trash into space is too dangerous.

We could, however, build a space elevator, and get trash into space pretty easily.

Nuclear waste is just radioactive salt/water/mud. It's unlikely we could recycle or reuse it. It's not like it has little bits of uranium in it that we could refine, or anything like that. It's not glowing goo that we could turn into a power sources for mech suits.

Best thing to do is what we already do: store it in a warehouse in the desert.

edit: eventually (i.e. longer than your lifespan) it stops being radioactive and will just be saltwatermud again.
