... if the original X-Men cartoon from the 90's never aired?

I was thinking about this earlier today, and maybe my high expectations of what X-Men could be was based on my memories of that cartoon.

I mean they are highly regarded in some way, the problems would be:

1. They focused too damn much on Wolverine
2. They constantly fucked up the Dark Phoenix Saga
3. They fucked up their own timeline hard

The only problems that could be argued with the 90s cartoon existing is they didnt follow character interaction and casting the same like Gambit in the movies was really just a guy in terms of his importance.

I dunno.

X-Men 1 and 2 were overall highly regarded at the time. They just messed it up later which Fox tends to do with sequels eventually.

It's also hard to tell how valuable X-Men would be without that 80s and 90s push they had.

X2, First Class, Days of Future Past, and Logan are better than most Marvel movies, IMO, and Logan might be the GOAT, or at least tied with Spider-Verse.

I guess I should have specified the X-Men movies that were bad, but that probably wouldn't have helped them. I did enjoy First Class, Days of Future Past, and Logan. I can't remember much about X-Men 1 or 2 any more. I probably need to go back and re-watch them at some point.

Maybe I'm mostly thinking of the one they had where most of the villains were just random un-named characters who didn't have any speaking lines.

Literally the only reason I wanted an X-Men movie was so that we could get busty country girl Rogue. Needless to say, the film could have been Dark Knight quality and I would have been disappointed. With no standard for comparison, yeah, I probably would have enjoyed the first movie better. I think I still would have seen the action as a little weak regardless.

A story doesn't need fan service to be good. But if it has fan service, you can't really take it out without causing disappointment. If there never had been sexy Rogue, 15 year old me probably would have latched onto Halle Berry's Storm as being the attractive one instead of getting annoyed at the absence of the best bust in 90s comics and cartoons.

The problem with X Men is every second movie is a turd.

X1 - good
x2 - good
X3 - sucked

Origins - sucked
The Wolverine - sucked
Logan - good

First class - good
Dofp - good
Apocalypse - sucked
Dark phoenix - sucked

I don't think so. I don't know that I would have been a fan of X-Men if there was no X-Men TAS.

I'm weird on this, I was an X-Men nut as a kid, VHSed the episodes and watched them dozens of times. Had a ton of comics too.

That probably sets me up to despise the Fox X-Men movies but I mostly don't. New Mutants and X3 were probably the only two I can say I didnt like and probably won't watch again. Apocalypse, if anything for the sheer amount of characters, including a damn perfect looking Psylocke, gets too much hate imo. It's hardly great, but it has a ton of cool moments, and I really like Nightcrawler.

The character appearances helped, even if briefly like Jubilee and Archangel, I guess because growing up I never dreamed of seeing live action depictions of these characters.

Needless to say, I'm excited for MCU. X- men, and eager to see what they do with it. Must have Gambit and Rogue in some shape or form.

Those movies probably would have bombed if not for the 90's cartoon. In fact it's extremely likely they never get made in the first place.

Facts.

They've definitely had some great movies, but the lows like Apocalypse, X3 etc bring down the overall ranking to just below average or bad depending on how you view DOFP. I think they should have stopped putting everything on Mystique and Jean, two of the least interesting characters in the X-Men roster even in the cartoon/comics.

Maybe not. The movies gave us the excellent renditions of the original cartoon theme. Without the source material, it likely would have been some lame ass white rapper or generic boyband doing the theme music.
