In terms of cartoons that is. I won't deny the incredible stuff that we have seen in modern movies.

It is just that cartoons made back then just hit differently and it is hard for me to put into words why. Maybe because they weren't generated by computers and looked identical to each other?

Animation is mostly better for modern shows, but character design and art direction was much better back then.

Ehh depends on the cartoons really. I think some newer stuff does look better, some older stuff had shittier animations and vice versa. I think a big issue in some cartoons is colors as some look really flat compared to others.

You should really go back and rewatch some of those old shows. It's actually kind of shocking how janky old cartoons used to be before they switched to digital coloring in a simplified style.

Bring up modern cartoons and I'm gonna use the opportunity to praise Bluey.

I think you'll find that animated characters back in the day looked identical too. Like people give the new she ra art style crap but look at the old she ra:

Hair color is literally the only way I can tell them apart.

Cartoons hit differently then because you were a child seeing action cartoons for the first and didn't care about how janky the animations were or how often they reused and recycled everything. Now you're an adult whose seen a million cartoons and are much less likely to be impressed by what you see and aren't even the target audience.

I do. 1981 Spider-Man is still aces. Scooby Doo will never not be great.

Honestly the style for new She-Ra does look pleasing but just from summaries of the series its more plots and characters that are hit or miss.

80s cartoons were mostly trying to sell us toys, with the occasional obligatory moral lesson because "concerned mothers" or something.

Every now and then, we'd get something weird, even with a toyline attached.
The toys:

The even weirder cartoon we ended up with:

I think it mostly depends on the shows you're looking at. I just know that they butchered Arthur with that Flash animation style they switched to. Looked so incredibly cheap.

Or fuck just look at how Magic School Bus changed between shows.

The animation in a lot of 80s cartoons could vary dramatically since they were typically pumping out tons of episodes.
