i have a mildly experimental game thats mostly ready but probably needs a couple final tweaks. Dunno if people want role madness and experimental back to back though

Like I said earlier, I'd think the best way to follow up the recent games would be to do something very vanilla and traditional. Have we had a minimalist game in recent memory? And then, after that, we can do another experimental game.

Because lately it's been:
Kingmaker
SW/P (alternating roles)
Nickelodeon
Role Madness

Only one of these four was a traditional game (Nickelodeon). The other three were all pretty interesting departures (in awesome ways).

Maybe we need a Google Doc for The Queue or something, so we can reference it and sign up.

As extra as it sounds, I absolutely second having an official list to reference. Google doc would work well. Also where's FFD and always sunny mafia

That said, you did see through my "roleblocker" lie, going from theorizing Doc to correctly concluding Jailer. My claim was just a move of psychotic desperation to get heat off of me. Wasn't thinking straight. My bad. Won't play again when I'm in that state of mind.

I thought this game would be more crazy than it was probably but I'm not sure in what ways.

I don't like when flavor is divorced from the game. At that point, you might as well throw it out.

I don't blame anyone for not believing me, not even on the second claim. I was hoping scum would think it's too early for me to be telling the truth

Yeah, Chris's game was fun but it basically was flavorless

As a host I find it infuriating when players spend hours flavor metaing instead of actually playing mafia tbh

I've had a lot of games solved because of flavour meta and I like the idea of disallowing metaing flavour.

I want to say I dislike players thinking they can predict a hosts role and flavor meta (Hello Motion Detector claim)
But we all still do it in our minds.

This is why you just.... consider that when making the game.

Part of the reason Elden Ring mafia was flavored the way it was is because it was practically unmettable. Nobody was going to question claims of random things I liked about Elden Ring

And make good safe lists. You are allowed to put main characters on the safe list

b8 is also so meta that any straightforward flavor claim is scum now.

I'm also fond of disallowing flavor claims, mainly because it makes it harder for scum to build a convincing fake claim, especially if they're not familiar with the flavor at all. I feel like trying to come up with a fake flavor for this game would've been a nightmare given my complete lack of knowledge for baseball and Chris's musical taste.

If I were to host a Mafia game, I'd design it so that flavor could be claimed freely, but it wouldn't matter at all. I was thinking of a Super Smash Bros. Mafia where everyone publicly selects a character, but the roles would be predetermined. So I'd just have to retrofit the flavor to match the role.

For example, if someone chose Mario, I'd take whatever role they had and try to justify it with their character.

"You are Mario, Town Vanilla. Even though you're Super Mario, you're an all-rounder, so you don't really stand out that much compared to the rest of the cast."

"You are Mario, Scum Janitor. Everyone knows that Mario is a plumber and a doctor, so why not add janitor to his resume?"

"You are Mario, Third-Party Serial Killer. You bonked your head one too many times, and now you think everybody is a Koopa. Destroy them all!"

"You are Mario, Town Prostitute. Look, you're Super Mario, savior of the Mushroom Kingdom and the world and all that. It's time to put that fame to good use. Who would possibly say no?"

Another idea is Player's Choice Mafia, where each player chooses their own flavor. A friend of mine did this before, but the problem was that the flavor you chose directly impacted the role setup, so it was a really unbalanced game. I'd handle it the same way as Super Smash Bros. Mafia: roles are made first and assigned to players at random, then I come up with something creative to match the role to the flavor.

I think flavor meta and role meta are in the same bucket. If someone is going to be metaing a set-up based on the roles included, then that has the potential to fire back as much as it has the potential to help.

Flavor meta is one of those things where the host has to find ways to work around it. I would argue that in SW&P mafia, flavor meta itself was not a problem and probably would not have been. The issue in that case was using Flavor Cops which I have come around to thinking are a dangerous role given they can just tell if somebody is lying flat-out. They're like Detectives with a single result, in that case.

Then you have stuff like my Percussion Mafia - Flavor matched roles, but there was no inherent split. Without a flavor split, flavor faking is less important, so it has less of an effect.

English Lit mafia had flavor that applied but with enough swerves that it should be understood not to directly lean on it - I mean, I had Voldemort as Town vanilla.

I would even consider games with very clear flavor splits, but in those cases, it becomes important not to leave traps for Scum (like Flavor Cops). I think Role safelists could become a thing that more hosts experiment with that would allow some freedom.

Whatever the case, I find games that don't have strong enough flavor to be completely unmemorable. And without that splash of color, the game is just less exciting to me.

completely agreed with this. i think flavor is one of the most fun parts of the game tbh and there enough ways to get around players attempting to meta flavors that it shouldn't be too much of a problem

good news my next game is going to be semi open so there won't be too much role meta either

I like flavor meta (SW/P naming conventions) but I also like when its disallowed in creative ways. When I eventually do Dota 2 Mafia 2, I intend to do something as a mix of both, or maybe do as plum did in Elden Ring mafia.
