It seemed like GOP leaders were hoping to let the Trump documents thing run its course and get him out of the picture, because he's had far too much (negative) influence on local races, resulting in moron / inexperienced candidates tanking in the polls.

But the problem is that the documents story is a slow trickle of worsening info, and it almost seems like the Democrats are goading the GOP into more openly backing/defending MAGA types. Problem is, that brand is deeply unpopular (as is their stance on Roe v. Wade) and the more they're pasted to it, the worse they're going to do. Thanks to the MAGA influence, they've doomed themselves with Oz and Herschel Walker, among others. Instead of a red wave, there's a very real possibility the GOP will lose the Senate split and may not even win the House.

Joe Biden's speech was low-key brilliant because he knew the knee-jerk response for the GOP would be condemnation and circling-the-wagons. The problem is that they're circling the wagons around a disaster they were trying to avoid. So now you have McConnell stuck in a weird position - he's publicly said that he wasn't happy with the quality of the GOP candidates (which is a roundabout way of saying he wants to move on from Tump) but now everyone under him is bitching up a storm on social media to defend "MAGA republicans."

The polls don't lie - not only is MAGA deeply unpopular with independents (and of course Democrats), a surprisingly large number of Republicans have started veering away as well. A recent poll showed that 30% of the GOP thought the FBI was justified in raiding Trump's property. That's actually an astonishingly high percentage of dissent for the GOP, especially going into midterm elections.

Imagine if the Dems get into position to force through electoral reform and turn the USA into a real democracy.

Republican success often hinges on shit like everyone in Alaska having ten votes in the presidential election.

I really wonder if Trump has dirt on multiple Republicans in congress and more or something.

Before Trump became president, so many old them were pointing out the fact that Trump is racist, a con artist, a liar, a bully, etc. Then afterward, many of the ones who pointed those things out did a complete 180 and supported him fully.

It's for sure sketchy, and we already know that Trump basically did everything in life through extortion and blackmail.

And we know for sure that GOP leadership hates him after the leaks regarding post-Jan 6 Kevin McCarthy came out. It's pure pandering to a base. The problem is that base is becoming increasingly toxic.

Reminds of a recent John Boehner book where he talked about how the Tea Party type GOP was a huge thorn in his side while he was Speaker of the House. He grew increasingly irritated with their combination of total lack of political knowledge (and savvy) and obsession with being on camera. He He then went on to say that current GOP leadership is paralyzed by what their political instincts tell them (throw Trump overboard) and what their increasingly violent and dangerous constituency demands.

I feel like "Trump has dirt on them" may just be a way for us to try to make sense of insanity. The grim truth may simply be that these people choose their path without anything forcing them to.

It's either that they made a deal with the devil (willing to toe the line for more money and influence) or that Trump had leverage on them. We already know several of them talk shit about Trump behind the scenes. McCarthy especially.

Lindsay Graham for sure is just being a sycophant because he wants the donations.

Someone hasn't been paying attention. Both chances have gone down. Dems now have a decent chance of holding the Senate. And those odds will get worse for the GOP. Maybe pay a little attention next time before you start talking.

I think more or less the same people who voted for him in '20 will vote for him again. I think the swing voters that really made a difference are not gonna vote for him again. Theres no way he wins its going to be the same result.

This country is fucked up in the sense that like 90% of our votes don't matter. Its the swing voters in the swing regions that truly matter. I don't see how any swing voter who went for Biden in '20 will go for Trump in '24. The idea behind voting trump out in the first place was that he was corrupt, divisive, and didn't truly lead the country. He was a phony. That image has only worsened with recent events.

Could be, but it could just be that a large portion of their base is loyal to Trump, and they care more about keeping their jobs then they care about the country.

Some of them are putting themselves in legal jeopardy by committing crimes in support of him, though

i wouldnt call it a death spiral but they've definitely faltered from the full head of steam they were running on before. they went from seemingly having a virtual sure shot at a blowout to being way more unsteady and uncertain. people like to pretend every republican voter is an insane ben shapiro clone, but a lot of them are just normal boring people who will probably not be driven to vote democrat but can very easily just become uninterested and not vote if you alienate them enough. they've been escalating way too hard this year and it's poised them for a pretty embarassing defeat from the jaws of victory moment
