Is the original anime an ok substitute for the manga

No.

Is the anime worth my time at all

the 3 movies that covers the golden age arc are worth checking out as a curiosity after you've read it, but it's no substitute

The '97 anime is a great experience and has its own excellent atmosphere. It gave us FORCES, one of the most iconic anime tracks of all time, and overall has a great OST in general. It is a good product. It is NOT a replacement.

The Golden Age movies are OK (the third one is actually quite good) even if they're very rushed and cut off basically all cast and world building in favor of the core plot, the first one being the most egregious of these. They are worth watching, NOT instead of the manga.

The 2016 and 2017 anime series...el oh fucking el.

I am the last thing from a manga purist out there in regards to the medium in general, but someone who has only experienced Berserk from stuff outside the manga quite literally cannot say they have experienced Berserk at all.

Also that MUSOU game Is TERRRRRIBLLLLLE. Like, by MUSOU standards it is one of the worst. You'd be better off booting up the mediocre Dreamcast game or a fan translation of the actually pretty good PS2 game.

The animes are all booty. Which is a massive shame.

Well first you get the drugs..

Manga is the only way to go, there's legitimately no valid substitutes. You can watch the old anime and the movies afterward for curiosity's sake but they absolutely do not serve as a replacement. The newer anime is straight trash and shouldn't be watched at all.

To the folks who are saying the all the anime versions are just straight up bad, I would highly recommend watching Lady Emily's deep dive analysis on them. It's pretty engrossing stuff, even in its breakdown of the newer anime.

I honestly don't think the old anime or the movies are bad, they're just missing a ton of stuff and are of mixed quality generally. The movies especially have a few moments of "oh, this is what an actually good Bersek adaptation looks like."

The biggest problem with the old anime is that it's almost literally a commercial for the manga and has the most abrupt, insulting "cliffhanger" of an ending that I've probably ever seen.

Berserk is the only manga I've actually read because i generally dislike manga.
But the anime were all so much worse

Just read the manga. The deluxe editions are excellent.

If you must watch the anime for part, the Golden Age movies are worth checking out as said, though still not perfect in terms of getting the whole story.

Berserk is still ongoing. Miura's closest friend and the rest of his team have continued the series on after his death following a very long hiatus, starting a few months ago. It's had a fairly stable schedule since then. Hardcore Berserk folks and people specifically looking for it can tell a difference in some of the panel layouts and action movements (the first chapter after it's return had a few panels one would not typically see in a Berserk swordfight), but narratively and on the whole it still feels like Berserk, and I'm glad it's being continued by someone with an actual close connection to Miura.
