If by "pass the point of no return" you mean the decline in quality? It's always been like that. The Sonic games have never been consistent in terms of quality. That is if you're just talking about the games.

Shadow being brought back after Sonic Adventure 2. They ruined his character after that, which is honestly a sign of where the series was headed.

I maintain that 2, 3, Mania, Adventure 1+2 are all great games (in spite of Adventure 1s jankiness, especially brought on by the bad ports)

Sonic Heroes was when Sonic started to decline for me. It was alright, but man were the games after it really bad.

there is no point of no return with sonic, that's basically the meme about sonic games. there will ALWAYS be hope for a new great sonic no matter how bad it gets.

Sonic & Knuckles was the high water mark for me. By then they had already started doing spinoffs of other genres (Mean Bean Machine, Spinball). They'd played out the original format that put it on the map (2d platforming focused on speed and quick reactions). After then it was lesser versions of the same thing or doing the Mario thing where they jammed the character into a new genre over and over (fighting games, racing, sports, etc...).

Sonic's game style doesn't work in 3D games. It's time we admit that. :(

It arguably barely works in 2D either, because you can't really go fast due to all the obstacles that are fastly approaching from off-screen that you're expected to react to.

Sonic Heroes is when the cracks started showing, and Shadow the Hedgehog shortly after confirmed it. Then Sonic 2006 sealed it.

I really liked Sonic Unleashed I don't know what people hate about it.

The Werehog sections were different but fun. If you want bad look at Sonic Lost World.

When they gave him a sword. That was worse than Unleashed. In fact, I almost beat Unleashed, but I couldn't beat the final boss.

The agreed consensus is that the daytime levels are great, but the Werehog levels drag the whole game down.

It didn't. It can still come out with very good games. The main problems are rushed, buggy releases, and lackluster stories. People loved SA1 and SA2 because they put decent effort into the plot. They rarely do that anymore.
