LONDON A neonatal nurse charged with murdering seven babies and attempting to kill 10 others was accused in court of injecting newborns with air and feeding them insulin at a hospital in the United Kingdom.

Prosecutors accused Lucy Letby, 32, of being a constant malevolent presence at the hospital in northwest England in a years-long case that has sparked horror and fascination in the country. She has pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutor Nick Johnson told jurors that Countess of Chester Hospital, where Letby worked, saw a significant rise in deaths and catastrophic collapses in its neonatal unit during 2015 and 2016, according to the Associated Press.

Babies who had not been unstable at all suddenly deteriorated. Sometimes babies who had been sick but then been on the mend suddenly deteriorated for no apparent reason, he said.

This led employees and investigators to suspect that a poisoner was at work, he said. Letby is accused of trying several times in some instances to kill one child.

The trial also heard on Tuesday how Letby, who was qualified to care for seriously ill newborns, texted a colleague to say it would be cathartic to be in a room where a baby had died allegedly by poisoning five days earlier.
She told her friend she wanted to see a living baby in the space that had previously been occupied by a dead baby, the jury of eight women and four men was told.
Although she was supposed to be caring for a baby in another room, Letby allegedly entered the room of a four-day-old boy and injected him with air through a nasogastric line to his stomach.
As fellow nurses failed to resuscitate the boy, Baby C, she told one colleague: Hes going, jurors were told.
Johnson said Letby searched for Baby Cs parents on Facebook hours after his death, adding: The timing may suggest that it was one of the first things she did when she woke up.
Another of her alleged victims, a three-month-old child, was left with irreversible brain damage after Letby tried three times to kill her by injecting milk and air into her nasogastric tube, jurors were told.

I can't help but be curious about her parents and upbringing. Did this catch them off guard or is this another cycle of abuse? Both are rather terrifying.

They don't even kill illegal mass murdering terrorists over there and their law boldly states women are special humans uniquely affected by certain crimes(literally legally men cannot be rape victims for example). She will be told how bad a thing she did and asked not to do it again.

Usually it gets counted as sexual assault which is 10 years but youre half right.

You are slightly mistaken. British laws say that men can be rape victims if they're raped by a man because there's penetration into the victim with a penis. So the laws therefore mean that they can't charge women with rape. At least, not cis women.

I dunno fellas I have some doubts about this case. All of the evidence against her seems to be circumstantial. The 'confession' that she supposedly wrote is weak is hell and it doesn't sound like the prosecution has presented any hard evidence that shows definitively that she deliberately killed these kids.

All of the circumstantial evidence together presents a pretty strong case that she probably did it but you can't convict somebody on the basis of probably. It should be proven beyond reasonable doubt and it doesn't sound like the prosecution has done that.

I don't envy anybody on the jury anyway. It must be really hard to make a decision on a case like this where a conviction surely means that the person will be in prison for the rest of their life. If it's not completely clear cut undoubted that they did it then it must be hard to give the guilty verdict.

Have they released a psychological evaluation of the killer yet? I always find those interesting, much more so than any supposed motive.

I didn't say crimes against men go unpunished, just pointed out some pertinent facts about the kangaroo court across the pond. Males apparently can't be raped despite reality(and rape and sexual assault crimes are two different crimes/categories with different guidelines to them) and mass murderers get early release from jail.

San antonio area maybe. I was real young at the time. Like 1993 i think. We were at randolph afb and it was a big story.

2 weeks of counselling, a handful of meds, 2000 dollar fine and a month of community service then she's free. You can bet on it, UK justice system is embarrasing.

Imagine finding out your baby was injected with air. Holy fuck that had to be painful.
