They already made a horror Winnie the pooh movie. It's funny seeing "is it made by disney" in the Google search suggestions. A lot of people are going to be confused. I wonder if when Superman is public domain will it mean that we can have Superman in Marvel now.

Someone on here had an idea for a black Superman movie that was actually pretty good. Basically how America would come to terms/deal with a black person who could do what Superman does. Idr who it was. Seemed like a neat idea though

That does sound like an interesting idea. But it also sounds like what is happening with Captain America right now both in the movies and irl lol

Fair, but this was a while ago and I think the powers Superman has ups the ante on the whole concept. Like, Falcon is interesting because of the symbolism but Superman would be interesting for that and the fact that he could destroy the planet if he wanted to.

By allowing people to use characters, previously locked down by single corporations, in new and different situations... death of originality.

Captain America is black now, and people lost their shit. Black Superman won't be received any differently.

Not for a while. Most iconic Marvel characters were created in the 60's. I suppose Captain America and Namor within 10 or so years maybe.

No, the original cartoons enter the public domain. Disney will always retain the rights to the character.

The Winnie the Pooh horror movie works because the books are public domain, and it's also mostly indistinguishable from the more recognizable Disney IP. Any attempt to do the same with Mickey will still be infringement

It's really more Batman. Batman catches you robbing a bank and beats the fucking shit out of you and you're in traction, Superman catches you and he flies you to jail and gives you a lecture on why stealing is wrong.

I'm kind of curious how copyright works with a character that has like a million different interpretations because of continuity nonsense. Like... the very first "leap over a building" superman would go public domain... but DC might actually be able to successfully argue that it's a different character entirely than modern Superman, or even Silver Age vs Golden Age.

Hancock, Brightburn, Invincible, The Boys. Just a few examples of Superman stories that didnt use Superman. The difference is they had to make a compelling character not just use someone elses idea.

There wont be tonnes of magical amazing well thought out stories. Just crappy rehashes banking on the Superman name.

please see Honey & Blood the Winnie the Poo version, the millions of terrible Sherlock or King Arthur versions. Did we get one or two good properties? Maybe its debatable.

Will it be worth it when every company is releasing a shitty Superman story to the point the character you hate seeing Superman?

Did they mention Clark Kent by name or only Superman? If all they have is, "You do too much, you're not Superman," then they could still have Clark Kent appear in the MCU and adopt the moniker of Superman.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/7/7/1/AAdlC_AADxpL.jpg

Iron Man had Tony Stark name his alter ego after the Black Sabbath song.
Batman Forever had the Riddler's costume exist as part of a fortune telling machine called the Guesser.
MCU Superman could have Clark Kent adopting the identity based off of the fictional pop culture hero.

The majority of Disney characters are already public domain.

Aladdin
Ariel
Arthur
Belle (Beauty)
Cinderella
Elsa
Hercules
Quasimodo
Robin Hood
Sleeping Beauty
Snow White

Is Peter Pan public domain? I'm pretty sure he is. In any event, you can still put a trademark on a specific character design and sue someone if their version is a little too close to your own. Disney put Filmation out of business over Snow White: The Adventure Continues.

I do. When a copyright expires for the original work, that specific work can be monetized and used in any way, as long as it doesn't infringe on the trademark.

Trademarks are not bound by time, and are specifically used for protecting properties if a likeness is infringed in another work or art. A company can infinitely renew trademarks for their IPs
