Is Jormungand that bad? Outside of the arena he's only used it twice and it hit pretty hard.

It's so heavy that he's never going to double with it like he could with an Anima tome, and if he gets attacked he's probably going to get doubled. Even if he has capped speed, he has 8 AS with it, which isn't going to double much.

And Olwen's sword is nice. I just wish she could get the bonus just by having it in her inventory or she could use staves. That way that magic bonus is more than just a +10 resistance boost.

This whole chapter has been a slow methodical crawl through metaphorical muck.

Well if you're using it's to kill high level enemy mages with high resistance themselves I assume, so the resistance is on point for that at least.

That chapter seemed strangely easy, but I did send Dean to solo all the ballistas. Shouldn't have bunched them all together like that so they couldn't defend eachother!

Poor Saias. You can only keep one of him and Ced, and pretty much everyone is going to pick Ced there. He's a solid unit, but Forseti is too busted to pass Ced up.

24 was very easy, just had to silence some status staves, and use a warp to get Mareeta to Galvus. Got the staff so I guess it's 24x time!

That recruitment is so annoying without the deployment patch. Having to mess with your order until Mareeta is in the middle group is so annoying, and I didn't want to waste a warp use sending her to Galzus.

I had to warp her to Galvus anyways because he just stayed stationary and nobody could either A) survive am attack or B) not kill him.

It's what I get for sticking all the real killer units in the middle, but not Lara.

So this is all to get back Eyvel...

Doing that chapter without save states is absolutely stupid if you don't already know where the warp tiles are. It's literally "lol hope you still have a rescue staff or you literally just randomly lost a unit and there's nothing you can do about it and no planning you could have done to stop it"

I tried that map legitimately, but then after stepping on a warp tile after I was almost done, I said screw this, deployed all of my A rank staff users and used all of the Rewarp staves that I took from the guys in 14x while warping Leif and Eyvel around while Linoan nostanks the guys at the escape point.

Very cool, simple final map. I always like when the final challenge of the game knows that you're not interested in some complicated mess and just want some showdown. The 6 mini skrimiges followed by condensing to the middle was very refreshing.

The Archer was the only Dreadlord giving me real trouble, but I Berserk staffed her and was well. I actually never used Berserk befor this map, so I had them all saved up....let's just say that whole bit of nonsense in the middle had taken care of itself by the time I got there.

So.where to start?

I guess Ill just lay it out there.this game was fucking awesome.

Theres a huge caveat there, though, because I did not play this game in its original state! Most of the things that were added wouldnt really have impacted much. Universal enemy range is convenient, but after playing so much FE its pretty easy to get a feel for how far enemies move and which one is going to be able to get to you the fastest regardless (individual marking is a much bigger deal which the patch does not add). Showing FCC is radical and I love that stat so much, I wish it was in other games. Showing growth rates is huge, and not just because of the very cool scroll system, its a quality of life that is just a no brainier. FE players always mine and look up growths anyways, being able to get more I go about your characters potential from the get go makes it all that much more fun to pick and choose.

Still, none of these would have effected my rating, with the exception of one big one: map positioning. I know you can game they system, but its a nightmare. I very well may have had a worse take on the game without this.but that said, in the fog of war maps where you couldnt, it didnt impact me at all, so maybe not.

I love the plot and characters, Leif is an idiot sometimes but in a justified and discussed part of the plot, not in a Celica and Erika way where its just that the writing is bad. Id say he's pretty high up there for Lords.

There are two big gripes I have. First, status effects. Obviously I had a horde of shit to deal with it towards the end there, but its very possible a player may not, and that would just make the last dozen chapters a fucking nightmare. Poison is one thing, but Berserk, Sleep, and Silence being permeant is not fair but challenging, its straight up bad game design.

Speaking of which, the fuck is up with magic in this game? Its completely lopsided, theres barely any of it, having might magic ranks is completely pointless and you cant even get more than 1 Light tome until youve almost beaten the game. I never like when Anima isnt consolidated, and this may be it at its worst.

But thatsreally it. There was some awkward stuff here and there but I was never not enjoying myself even at some frustrating parts. Obviously I have more games to play, but this is the last mainline FE that hasnt been remade that I have never touched, and what a hell of a final piece to the puzzle.

So re: Brigid/Eyvel, while technically the game never 100% confirms that she is Brigid, it's pretty heavily implied at least (she regains her memories and returns to her kids in the ending, for instance). There's some weird stuff with her not having the mark of Ulir, though. What people have been able to theorize about from information in both games and some supplemental material is that what likely happened is something similar to what happened to Lewyn, in that she did in fact die but the dragon god Ulir revived her for the price of her memories. Something about how her bow is infused with the power of memories by him or something, I don't remember entirely.

Other kind of interesting tidbits is that if you don't save Eyvel or let her die before she gets turned to stone, she'll be remade into the Deadlord Draco in the final battle as a Sniper. A few other characters can suffer the same fate of being made into Deadlords in the final battle if you let them die, don't recruit them, or get captured and don't rescue them, specifically Lifis, Dagdar, Sara, and Galzus.

This has some... kinda sad implications for the final chapter of Genealogy potentially as well. It's definitely into 'unsubstantiated wild theories' territory, but given that several playable characters in FE5 are reanimated into Deadlords, you can extrapolate that its entirely possible that the Deadlords in the Finale of FE4 are probably the non-surviving characters from Gen 1.

There's a few weird things with this that make it seem not the case (ie it seems like they didn't come up with this as a possibility til FE5, for instance, because Draco is male in FE4 and female in FE5 if you don't rescue Eyvel), so its definitely not confirmed or even likely, but if they do remake FE4 I think it would be a pretty good player gut punch in the final chapter to have this theory confirmed and made canon.

That's some really cool information.

FE5's connections to FE4 are very cool but it absolutely feels like none of it was planned prior to FE5's development at all, so it's kind of a retrofit situation. It definitely works for the most part.

Finn ain't Nanna's dad though, no sir. Only MY pairings are cannon!

Oh, and the much bemoaned unique feature of the game, staff accuracy, which was so infamous that it's like...one of the only things I ever knew about the game.....such a non issue. Hell, I was trying to game the system to make Theif/Unlock miss on purpose for some of Tini's lower levels.

I keep forgetting stuff. The MAPS in this game are SO GOOD. Obviously FE5's biggest problem was huge empty landscapes you had to drag your characters through. Here though, maps were so varied, in size, style, challenges, goals, methods...it's probably the best maps in the series, if I'm being honest?

Since you're done with the Jugdral games now I can say re: your post during FE4 about Arvis killing Azel, supposedly there was originally going to be a third act in FE4 where you would go and rescue the surviving gen 1 characters. Azel would have been one of the ones turned to stone that you could rescue.

I'm really glad you liked 5! I have a friend that has Thracia as his favorite FE game...hell, it's his favorite game period. He makes a really great argument for it in that Thracia feels the most like a wargame, with the guerilla tactics of capturing and the uneven odds. I also love August and Leif as main characters and they add to the feeling of it being a wargame. I think Thracia gets a lot of flack, but there's a lot of neat stuff in the game that's never revisited.

I should probably get around to playing Thracia at some point.

Considering Eyvel is Brigid, it's odd that she can't use the Bragi Blade. but considering that neither Mareeta or Galzus can use it despite being confirmed to have major Od blood, my guess is that it's minor holy blood only. It's probably a gameplay limitation that limits it to four people, but it would've been really nice if Galzus could use it just so you have it on someone who can actually beat Raydrick with no investment.

There's also a theory that the statues in the cutscene after chapter 4 were Azelle, Ayra, Lachesis, and Lex turned to stone. I think it's specifically those four since their classes resemble the statues the best.

Honestly, we're lucky to have gotten Thracia 776 at all. It was a Super Nintendo game released in 1999, and I think it had a wonky distribution method too. If we had gotten it in America, we could've possibly had the comical situation where they're releasing a SNES game after the launch of the GameCube.

Yeah when I saw that release date in that FE64 video I was like...blown away.

But there it is on the title screen!

So as I've mentioned before, it's going to be a bit if a break before continuing on to the next game. Lots of stuff has built up in the backlog since I started doing these, and with God of War in a few days there's no way I'm not booting that up right away.

Hopefully not too long though! Hoping people still talk FE general stuff here with their own runs and things until it continues, me too of course.

The next game is either going to be Radiant Dawn to play through Telius again, which I have almost no memory of other than the basics, so it may as well be a new game for me, or it's going to continue the Kaga train and jump right into TearRing Saga. Obviously, whichever one I do next will be followed by it's own sequel before moving over to the other.

Any reason to go with Radiant Dawn over Path of Radiance?

I think I only ever played the first couple hours of TearRing Saga. I should give that a try again at some point.

I recommend Dark Lord and the Maiden of Light. It's maybe not the "best" FE romhack I've ever played but it's the one that feels most like an FE game to me. Including the faithful way in which it gets way too up its own ass in the last few chapters.

The games all blend together in my head, but now that I'm YT diving I'm seeing people put each one in pretty wildly different positions.

I think people tend to separate the 3 different routes.

Fates does tend to make one sick, yes.

This is gonna sound like me being dramatic but trying to play through all three routes of Fates in a row legitimately made me feel ill, at least in the "this food made me sick so now I can't even look at it without wanting to vomit" way.

It's weird to separate them when they're all exactly the same game. I'd sooner separate the routes of 3H than Fates tbh.

Honestly I like Fates better than Awakening purely because I absolutely hate the Pair Up mechanic and Fates at least made it tolerable. But I kind of think both non-Echoes 3DS games are garbage.
