When I was a little babby teenager I was so obsessed with JRPGs that I'd snap up anything that had an anime aesthetic. When I had my mom buy me a copy of Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis I literally didn't know anything about it at the time, and it somehow did enough things right that it's one of my lowkey favorite games of all time. The soundtrack is hella hype when it needs to be, the combat has a really satisfying flow to it despite being turn-based, and all the playable characters have a decent amount of depth to them despite initially seeming like walking anime tropes. As far as JRPGs go, I still find its more slice of life driven plot really refreshing; no world saving melodrama in this one, just solid character development centered around the main character learning more about his origins. I also like how it incentivizes getting to know the playable cast more through their character quests, like making them more effective support partners during alchemy sessions, or in one character's case even unlocking the ability to use his full moveset. You even need to actually finish the entirety of one of your party members' character quests in order to get the good ending. Each character has their own unique gimmick in battle, so nobody ends up feeling outright useless. Just a really cozy game to play. It's lowkey kind of weeb trash, but it's the actually really good kind of weeb trash. I highly recommend it.

Ico is about as long as a couple Seinfeld reruns, so square that away early.

As for recs, try Wild Arms 3 and Splinter Cell games.

If you want, but you don't have to. Wild Arms stories aren't connected to each other in any meaningful way, just the occasional references here or there plus a shitload of cameos in 5.

Try to stick to the ones at hand, it's too easy to get lost in the PS2 library. You got some great games there waiting to be experienced.

You can always comprise a list anytime you want.

I won't say which one you should definitely start playing, but Dark Cloud, Jak and Daxter 1 and Ratchet and Clank 3 are all very, very good games and should be some of your top priorities imo.

As for what games to get out of that list:

MGS2 and 3 are fantastic. 3 is a spy pastiche set in the 60's that's extremely odd but played fairly straight, it's honestly a masterpiece for the story alone. Make sure you get the Subsistence version though, because the original game has a bad camera.

Final Fantasy X is good, X-2 has great gameplay but a divisive story with a much different tone. I'd either wait a while to get into these, or play the remasters for better quality and more content.

GTA3 is significantly aged nowadays, but I liked it. San Andreas is probably pretty aged too, but that game is a masterpiece.

Shadow of the Colossus has a GOAT remake on PS4, and a much more playable PS3 port. The PS2 version is amazing, but the framerate can drop significantly past sub-30fps.

God Hand is stiff and janky, and the humor is gonna be hit or miss. It's worth a go though, the fighting is very customisable and there's a ton of stuff outside of the main gameplay stages to do. This should be a mid-priority pick-up imo.

God of War 1 is okay. God of War 2 fucks severely. Hard recommend.

Persona 3 is a great game, I actually played FES just last year. Persona 4 has a fantastic reputation, I'm looking forward to playing it on Switch. These are some of the biggest cult classic releases on PS2, if you can afford them I would absolutely recommend them.

I tried playing Wild Arms 3 recently but couldn't play it.

It's unfortunate because it looked cool and I was looking forward to trying it, but the auto-scrolling text during story sequences with no option to turn it off or even change the speed was game ruining for me.

It was the PS4 port that I was trying too. You'd think they would have thought to fix that.

I don't remember it being used that much throughout the game. If memory serves, you can press a button to pause the function and scroll through at your leisure.
