That's basically what it was. The problem is that Twitter had to deem you "worthy" to receive a blue checkmark. If you weren't famous, you couldn't get one, because you didn't "need" one. Hence, it became a status symbol. Blue checkmark = noteworthy person, in their mind.

Correct.

Musk's just trying to make it into something it never was and was never meant to be.

Having public figures have easy, free access to a verification system was a benefit to Twitter.

Sure, I just don't understand why there's such an outrage. It's essentially being turned into a premium subscription perk instead of a popularity contest. If anybody can get one, it still serves its purpose. If you "have a twitter account for business and public relations purposes," then you can afford $8 a month as a business expense easily.

There's really no reason to get upset about it. Average users will see no change, other than the fact that now they can be verified, too.

It's just the truth. The verification checkmark is a wannabe status symbol in its current incarnation. It serves a purpose, but it also mutated beyond that to become something gaudy and obnoxious.

Social media in general was a mistake, but the verification system as it currently exists made it even worse.

I found it weird that Elon's reply to her got exactly 100k more "likes" than hers.

it wasn't even particularly funny, so it definitely looked like a really convenient slant in likes for such a low effort tweet.

I didn't care before. I'm just pointing out that the checkmark system will be optional. I've seen a lot of people making fun of "$8 a month free speech" as if they don't realize that it's a premium feature and isn't required at all.

You'll still have to provide proof of identity. You can't just buy a checkmark arbitrarily claiming to be somebody you aren't.

This will always be the major weakness of the American form of government; it's too easy for billionaires to hijack it. We should just nationalize Twitter and any other American made social media or sensitive commodity (like oil) that is vitally important to our way our life. Why does Elon Musk get to decide that free speech costs $8 a month? It's insane.

Oil is like a no brainer to me, you will never convince me one person deserves the proceeds of our country's natural resources. You wanna quibble about Twitter and the like, though, costing private individuals money to develop, well, nows the perfect time to do it. The shareholders already got paid, and Elon Musk gets all his money from government grants and tax breaks anyways. Like most things, it's already paid for by American tax dollars, we just don't have control over it. Nationalize everything.

Musk cultist can't stand it when people criticize their dear leader.

I know this may surprise you, but not everyone uses Twitter in the first place. So this means you don't need to be a Twitter user to criticize how dumb Musks idea is.

Even if one is a Twitter user, one can still criticize Musk and his dumb idea that's just a cash grab for a currently free service.

Musk isn't providing an actual much needed, non existent, newfound premium feature. He's trying to sell something that is currently free on a platform he made an impulse purchase on because he was born privileged.

His tweets trying to mock anyone criticizing his idea are even worse. It tries to mock people but instead makes himself look worse with the level of self irony and weak comparisons he makes.

Do conservatives know that just because you don't want to pay for something, it has nothing to do with whether or not you can afford it.

I really try to be impartial but these dudes objectively have the strangest leaps in logic.
