If one mistranslation brought such a negative impact to the world, imagine how many more have yet to be discovered. Can we truly rely on a holy book that is rife with human mistakes and errors?

Also, an intentional mistranslation is hardly anything new.

Iirc, when the KJV was being made, they intentionally left out whole books of the Bible.

How can it be a mistranslation if it clearly states sex before marriage is bad

and marriage is only between a man and a woman?

like even stuff like BJs are bad

Yeah there are a lot of mistranslations in the Bible. No way anything goes 2000 years of reprinting and translation without things being all sorts of out of place.

As a Christian I'd rather just herlar the truth for myself.

Because they've been radicalized to believe that anyone not a Christian, or even the same flavor of Christian as them, is a direct threat to them and America.

The height of Goliath is a known mistranslation.
And then we got changes made on purpose.
Like... Isaiah 7:14 the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.
The 2011 American retranslation changed "the virgin" to the young woman.

As much as I would love for all the homophohia in the bible to be fake, does this particular realization actually change anything?

Even if the word "homosexual" is a mistranslation, I think the bible has enough bad things to say about gay (male) sex that I doubt a few instances of a single mistranslated term is going to radically affect much.

Still, hopefully this does lead fewer young Christians down a hateful path. The old people whove had the original messages drilled into their head likely wont budge on this, but the kids might start to question things at least

I have a joke I like to use pointing out how even one can just misinterpret something which is helped by mistranslations. Like idk what the wording was originally but take the line "man shay not lie with a man as he would a woman" most people interpret this as men shouldn't sleep with men. I say what if it means it's ok to lie to women but not to men? I don't actually think that just saying if one wanted to interpret it that way you could.

Most Christians I know believe that the Bible - whichever version they're reading - is the immutable word of God; they will simply not entertain the possibility that the monks who translated it made mistakes or editorialized it.

i don't think this makes as much of a difference as they think it does. it doesn't strike me as notable that the word "homosexual" didn't appear in the bible until 1946, because homosexual is a relatively modern medical term, and the ancient Greeks (and i presume other contemporary cultures) had radically different views about sexuality than we have today. it was very common, for instance, for grown men to have sex with boys younger than them for pleasure, and only sleep with their wives for mating purposes, yet this was never labeled as "homosexual" in their time.

They did not. If you are referring to the Apocrypha, those were translated as well and were part of the KJV for most of its existence. They even translated books that are in the Appendix to the Latin Vulgate that are not even in the Catholic canon.

I've known this for years. There's also a lot of things that the Bible says are "sins" but Christians do it anyway.

At the end of the day, bigots will always just cherry-pick and misconstrue the parts of the Bible that seem to justify their shitty views.

Without even clicking the link I know this is about "arsenokoites", a term which most scholars believe is something that Paul pulled out of his ass since it appears in no other context prior to his letters.

It's a Greek word mashup that literally means "man-bedders", and is often translated as either 'homosexuals' or 'pedophiles' (typically the former)

Paul isn't very fond of effeminates either, he likes his guys manly.

It's not like they follow the Bible anyway. They just cherrypick things that can be twisted to align with their shit worldview.

Or they just literally make shit up. (Hey, just like the bible!)
