[Final Thoughts: The singer has a deep, powerful, angry voice which would be fantastic on the right song--I'm just not super fond of the combination of this voice with these lyrics. Still great lyrics and I generally like what the singer & band are doing, I'll also praise the drums for being in the "too intense for me, but done in a way that I actually don't mind"--the singer's ability to completely overpower the drumming actually lets the drums properly accentuate the song instead of drowning it out. A very well made song that I kinda like.]

Phil Bozeman (the vocalist) has such a powerful voice and his childhood was pretty messed up. Both his parents died when he was young and the last two albums have songs/themes that relate to that.

Any specific song you'd like me to check out after the main ranking? I'm not opposed to trying another one or two later.

Another busy day today, so no updates. Things should calm back down tomorrow, hopefully.

Have I ever recommended any other Whitechapel before? I don't remember. These two songs from their 2019 album immediately come to mind though. This was kind of their first album where they started to mix in a bit more softer elements into their music.

It looks like the only other officially nominated track was "The Void" back at the first topic. I wasn't a fan of that one, but to be fair, it has been a few years since I heard it & my tastes may have shifted enough that I'd be more favorable to the song these days.

(I don't keep a record of extra songs that weren't officially ranked, so I don't know if any others showed up during a post-ranking listen)

Anyhow, I'll add those songs to the extra list next time I'm at the tablet.

Okay, back with three more songs to start with::

============================

#618: Grimes - SCREAM (2:20):
https://open.spotify.com/track/0i7AGJG9DX0vI1w798IVKZ?si=64f4dc36d7964e0f

Nominator: Player_0 [23/33 Remaining]

Initial Score: 34.11
Revised Score: 63.14
Final Score: 55.3701

(First Reaction: I like the idea of a Chinese rap song being nominated, but I could really do without the implied rape of the lyrics.)

Kupo... once again something pulls me away from the tablet for forty straight minutes after I give a Revised Score, but before I have a moment to start typing... this ranking would go much quicker if there were more freedom in my free time, kupo. *sad Moogle noises*

...alright, so I'm not that sad about it, but it is inconvenient and mildly vexing.

So, this track: I'm in the mood for it tonight. Twisted and terrifying Chinese rap song sounds rather appealing and I kinda don't care about the subject matter? And while it's supposedly only "the implication of sex" it's really hard to see this as anything other than rape. Like there's no way to take a line such as "Quick, spread the legs without desire wide" to be consensual. Seriously, the fact that the other person does not desire what is happening is literally right there. But honestly, I'm in the mood for a song that is both different and dark, and this song fulfills both of those requirements quite nicely. So while the subject matter places this as a song I have to be in the right mood to appreciate, there are obviously times when I will be in that mood.

I can't really guess what the song will end up with for a Final Score as it's likely to vary wildly with my current mood, but at this exact moment, I'd say it's a pretty good song.

[Final Thoughts: Not an average of the two sccores, which would be quite lower than this, but it's a score that feels like it's between them. Somewhere in the middle of "did not like" and "liked" is "kinda liked". This track isn't working for me tonight, but when I'm in the mood for an excessive amount of darkness or something really different, I can definitely like or appreciate this. So I don't want to drop this too far down the list... so this shall be a bit of a compromise score.]

-once you pop, you can't stop-

===================

#617: Chicos de Barrio - Mucha Lucha [2:59]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZAkzCw17GM

Nominator: paulg [36/52 Remaining]

Initial Score: 58.37
Revised Score: 56.33
Final Score: 55.43

(First Reaction: I've actually never seen an episode of Mucha Lucha as I wasn't watching too much TV at the time (not none, obviously, but less than one would expect). Song is fun and energetic enough that it doesn't really need association with the show though, so that's nice.)

!The energy is infectious and I like wrestling, so an ode to lucha has an appeal, but the track is a bit repetitive...

[Final Thoughts: Not really a song for me since I have no nostalgia for or even basic knowledge of the series this is the theme song for, but it's so catchy & fun that I kinda dig it.]

===================

-it's a way of life-

============================

#616: Celldweller, Growling Machines - Own Little World (Growling Machines Remix) (7:47):
https://open.spotify.com/track/6SQuhe0nkL6wiXM8XrCxp1?si=23426445973d47d8

Nominator: CPU [22/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 54.00
Revised Score: 56.17
Final Score: 55.44

(First Reaction: Some decent lyrics (during the brief sections that there are lyrics), some parts of the backing dance track sound very game-y, and the pulsing is kept at a tolerable level. Parts of the song are reminding me of something, but as usual I can't quite place it... ah well.)

Dream of a world for me and my kind
It's safe in the alternate reality

Okay, I like those lines. There's also some very retro computer bwoom notes that sound C64-esque, so I like those notes as well. Most of the rest of the song feels like typical dance music which I'm not really into, but that first verse and the retro beeps are pretty fantastic. I also suspect I like this song better than the original version... the original is much shorter at less than half the length and has a lot more singing to it, but it lacks the beeps and goes a bit harder than the remix. Soo... not great, but it does some things I really enjoy and it's definitely the right version of the song.

[Final Thoughts: I'd like more focus on the lyrics, but what's here is certainly on point and those heavily computerized notes that start just before the three minute mark are pretty great. I'd say I kinda like this, but the extended dance breaks hold it back a bit.]

And two more, to make sure I get at least a half day in no matter what; I'm expecting to get in another five later this morning, but if I don't then at least I've got this much accomplished:

Also, while not the greatest tonal whiplash between two songs, this did feel weird.

====================

#615: Trilok Gurtu - Living Magic [6:28]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ueis7L8d-AY

Nominator: cakophon [14/20 Remaining]

Initial Score: 55.604
Revised Score: 53.12
Final Score: 55.604

(First Reaction: I don't think I have the musical expertise to properly appreciate what this world fusion instrumental song is, but it's pretty nifty and unlike anything else on the list thus far.)

!A different instrumental, but not one I'm really into that much.

[Final Thoughts: Absolutely everything about this song is about twelve steps over my head, but I think I'm moving it back up to the "kinda like" tier. I mean, I kinda like trying new things sometimes and this is new enough that it holds my attention for its full duration without complaints. Though like so many other tracks, this is the "very talented instrumental song that doesn't inspire any specific emotion" writeup, so here we are.]

====================

-meow meow meow meow, meow-

============================

#614: The Presidents of the United States of America - Kitty (3:23):
https://open.spotify.com/track/4WamMWxFi6ts3xkIhivF5c?si=9ed1e77288b448f1

Nominator: CPU [21/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 50.004
Revised Score: 50.88
Final Score: 50.44 [Upgraded to 55.70]

(First Reaction: I love that this song has a Wikipedia page:

Description

The song describes a man's desire to touch a kitty cat that has been out all night, implied to be a feral cat. After a moment of bliss, the cat turns on him and scratches him and he decides to let it spend the night outside again.

Song is... okay? It's not as cute or funny as it could be, but I like the meowing and the idea of the song.)

The lyrics can be pretty repetitive ("Kitty at my foot and I wanna touch it" occurs 17 times by the end of the song and some of the other lines are up there pretty far as well) and there isn't a whole lot happening musically until the outro, where things really pick up... but,ya know... cat. It's also fun and I do enjoy having an excuse to meow (not that I ever need an excuse), so it's certainly not bad. Just... "not as cute or funny as it could be" kinda summed it up.

[Final Thoughts: Meow.]

[Later: Yeah, this is another in the "stuck in my head for so long that I'm moving it up the 'kinda like' tier.]

Three more to start off the afternoon:

==================

#613: The Furies - Hunter (5:20):
https://youtu.be/FZ7NsTrCnCY

Nominator: Mega_Mana [28/38 Remaining]

Initial Score: 58.13
Revised Score: 56.73
Final Score: 55,705

(First Reaction: It's very well performed and I'd like to hear more by the band, but I'm not fully clicking with this song for some reason.)

!Good song that I never make much of a connection with for unexplained reasons, you know how it goes.

[Final Thoughts: The type of song I love, performed incredibly well, and somehow missing a spark that lets me become obsessed with it. I'm really not sure why.]

[Later: I wish I had more to add here, but it's still just a great song that I have very little reaction to.]

==================

-gun to the max, baby-

===================

#612: Diablo Swing Orchestra - The Sound Of An Unconditional Surrender [5:31}:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHnMI7qD3oo&list=PLbqs-W3v0JokCip1yCvbDS5Diki_yhvvC&index=6

Nominator: CJones [16/18 Remaining]

Initial Score: 53.00
Revised Score: 53.04
Final Score: 55.71

(First Reaction: Pleasant, but nothing about it really grabbed me or left a lasting impression.)

I want to like this song. It has a very nice sound to it, I just don't feel like it really goes anywhere... a lot of time is spent on an outro that keeps repeating the same phrase and none of the lyrics really interest me... like, I guess, "I will always hold you, dear' is 'nice' but there are plenty of other songs with lyrics about holding someone or being held, so it's pretty hard for me to really go crazy over the line. It's not a song that does anything wrong, but I just... don't really get much from it, I'm afraid.

"The Sound Of An Unconditional Surrender" is not at all similar to the song I'm about to post, but my reaction to the songs were practically identical:

Oak - False Memory Archive:
https://oakinoslo.bandcamp.com/track/false-memory-archive

I liked the singer's voice, the instrumentation, absolutely loved the song title... and yet I couldn't give it a great score because I just really wasn't into it, no matter how many pros it had going for it. I still go back and listen to the song occasionally to this day because I *WANT* to love it, but... no, I don't. I'm not going to dig up the actual writeup for False Memory Archive, but I feel like it was similar to the song I'm supposed to be talking about--lot of positive attributes, not so great a final score.

[Final Thoughts: I really want to love this. It's a song that does everything right, but something's just not clicking... I kinda like it, but something with this many positive qualities should be hitting the 70 point tier and it just... doesn't, for reasons that I can't understand enough to articulate them. It's not that I want the song to be doing anything differently or that I have any complaints, I just don't enjoy it as much as it seems like I should. And that's not satisfying to any of us, but it's kinda what we're stuck with.]

[Later: Oh hey, there's the other almost identical writeup that randomly talks about False Memory Archive. ...This is the second writeup, right? I didn't just eliminate this song twice in a row? Because this writeup is so familiar that I'm starting to lose track of reality.[

===================

-ironically, the False Memory Archive comparison would have worked for Hunter too-

========================

#611: Dorian Electra, Mood Killer, Lil Mariko, Lil Texas - Ram It Down (2:32):
https://open.spotify.com/track/4xjiRftxO1geMTZGSqBJJM?si=8a4f18970eb04797

Nominator: Bane [27/38 Remaining]

Initial Score: 52.00
Revised Score: 53.05
Final Score: 55.80

(First Reaction: The louder, metal-esque counterpart to "My Agenda".)

[Final Thoughts: I meant to come back and type something for the writeup, but I didn't and now it's completely blank.]

[Later: I had a few sentences typed up, but the delete key on the keyboard got stuck and deleted all of it, along with the entirety of "The Sound Of An Unconditional Surrrender"'s existence, so clearly even mechanical devices do not want this song to have any sort of writeup. Even more abridged version: Beat is a bit too pulsing, I'm still not exactly thrilled with how many of Dorian Electra's song are from the perspective of the far right (I know they're making fun of them, but I prefer the more... screaming expetives at them type of attack than this light mockery), but I still kinda like it. The ridiculously buff frog from the video is also kinda fun (I can't remember if I bothered mentioning the frog in its any of its other appearances, though I'm pretty sure I've seen it before).]

Nominator: Haste [21/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 55.97 [#483]
Revised Score: 56.00
Final Score:55.9073

(First Reaction: Pretty cool for a battle theme.)

!Original video has been banned and I can't be entirely sure this replacement vid is the correct song, but I *think* it is? How many "Battle Theme III"'s could Masashi have composed? (Please don't answer that)

!Song is one of the better battle themes I've heard, but still not exactly a preferred style of music.

[FInal Thoughts: Yeah, I kinda like it. Not anything I want to say about it, really... it's battle music done in a rather pleasing way that I kinda like.]

#609: Ryo Fukuda - Crazy Tune 1 2001 [0:44]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-mT_KgAhTI

Nominator: @TunnelScene [18/27 Remaining]

Initial Score: 52.726
Revised Score: 55.94
Final Score: 55.94

(First Reaction: It is pleasingly odd and it definitely is a crazy tune, but it feels like I'm missing something here.)

A fun shot of fairly high chaos music with lots of bleeps and bloops, but it's on the short side and doesn't really make me think of anything other than "this is neat". Which it is! it's quite enjoyable and I'd like to hear more of it, but I think it's more a mid-50's type of neatness than something that ascends to the next tier... sorry about that. I suppose it's probably a good thing that it left me wanting more?

[Final Thoughts: Chaos chaos.]

[Later: I do enjoy what this song is doing, it's just so short that I don't have a chance to get truly engrossed in the chaos. I get hyped up for what's coming and then things just stop quite suddenly and I'm left feeling unfulfilled because I want more of this chaos.]

I strongly disagreed with your assessment of Malign Monologues (it's my favorite track on the album), but in this case we're on the same page. The Sound Of An Unconditional Surrender is middling to low IMO. The track clearly exists to show off Johannes Bergion's cello skills. He's one of the founding members of the band, but he's been less and less of a presence with each successive album, while the trumpet, trombone and violin become more prominent.

Still, I'm glad the track is there. I feel I should mention, there's a reason why I nominated the whole album and not just my favorite tracks. I feel DSO is a band that thrives on variety, and this is their most varied album. Swagger and Stroll Down the Rabbit Hole, like most of their albums, is a case where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The non-DSO songs I nominated, taken on their own, are better than anything on S&SDtRH. But I listen to whole albums more than individual songs, and Swagger and Stroll is easily my favorite album of 2021, and I still listen to it pretty regularly.

It definitely has a lot of variety to it and I appreciate that. I don't usually listen to albums outside of ranking topics (long story), but this was a rather unique trip. I'll refrain from directly commenting on how the album tracks compare to your other nominations because I do *occasionally* refrain from blatantly spoiling things.

...though comedically enough, I do blatantly spoil something in one of the following three songs' writeups:

============================

#608: Linkin Park - Runaway (3:03):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9voGeDduOXM&list=PLSZnrWBCBT3ng1xEWEkXC91StoZjD8BP3&index=6

Nominator: Mega_Mana [27/38 Remaining[

Initial Score: 73.80
Revised Score: 58.20
Final Score: 55.46 [Upgraded to 55.943]

(First Reaction: Angsty teenage-type song, but that works for me. It's also pretty similiar to Crawling, but... that also works for me? I've got no complaints about what it is.)

It is one of the few songs on Hybrid Theory to contain unusually little rapping by Mike Shinoda, just like "Crawling".

Aha! So this song is superficially similar to Crawling in ways that other people have noticed. I feel irrationally pleased that I was kinda right about something, even if I didn't know why or articulate that thought in any way.

So, this song has had quite a dramatic tumble from its original placement. I actually love the instruments in the opening (those are my tones, right there). but I'm less interested in the topic of running away than I was the first time around... and the lyrics get really repetitive towards the end. The last minute is almost monotonous, which is a tragedy when the song was only three minutes to begin with. When I feel like I could cut a full third of the song and not really miss anything, that's really not a good sign.

That being said... instruments I love and it does have a lot of the traits I love about the band, and it's definitely a song I -can- love when I'm in the right mood for it. I'm just not in the right mood at the time of this Revised Score and I suppose we'll see how I feel about it at the Final Score.

[Final Thoughts:

Random YouTube comment:

"Why do so few people know this song? It's so good actually. My local radio station plays it a lot and no one enjoys it."

Oh, I love that comment. From the deadpan comedy of this song plays a lot but no one enjoys it, to the way they pose a question ("Why do so few people know this") and answer it themselves ("no one enjoys it"), that is comedy gold.

Aaanywho... this song is something that I kinda like, but it's still on a downward trend. This isn't as drastic a fall as it was between the first two scores, but still... for whatever reason, I'm just not clicking with the song lately.]

[Later: Minor boost to rearrange the list slightly.]

============================

-I still hate how her name is officially "Ple" now instead of "Puru". Shouting pleplepleple is not nearly as much fun.-

====================

#607: Alf Inge Wang - In-Game Music (240 Second Countdown) (from Kahoot) (4:06):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBb8WzBrbjQ

Nominator: rwlh [18/24 Remaining]

Initial Score: 50.47
Revised Score: 55.34
Final Score: 55.50007 [Upgraded to 55.946]

(First Reaction: I highly suggest anyone interested in listening to this song do so before reading any of the following comments, which are spoilered to be on the safe side.

I like the idea of a song that's a mystery, even to its nominator.. I usually wind up nominating things that are new to me at topics;, there's usually at least one pick that's more of a "hey, look at this thing I just found!" than a carefully considered nomination. Unfortunately, this misses the mark a bit... I still have my personal issues with repetition and the metronome-esque TICK.. TOCK... TICK.... TOCK... at a consistent pace throughout the song actively ruins the relaxing vibe the song has going for it.

And then the song spontaneously freaks out and speeds up in a sudden "you are going to die now, bitch" fashion to make sure you know that your time is almost up and good Lord, there is no reason for a song this tranquil to spontaneously attempt to induce panic. It's all, "just relax. It's like you're sitting in a field. You have to complete this test, but you may do so at your own pace. This is a safe place. *gets out a chainsaw* Well, a safe place if you finish in the next 30 seconds or so, at any rate!!!" and it's like, Jesus song, what the hell is wrong with you??
)

...Alright so the sudden intensity isn't really that intense if you know it's going to happen. It's still an interesting song. I like the mellow vibe most of the song has, but I do also enjoy the rather intense spike of emotion at the end. It's a fairly novel experience and I can see aspects of things that I love in it; if it did away with the ticking and the dramatic spike, we'd have a very nice atmospheric song and I'd like it quite a bit. If it went all in with the tension and managed to keep the panic building properly, I'd love that too. As is, it takes two things I love and does them... adequately enough to be enjoyable, though I'm not super wild about it. Still, a fairly neat experience, and one I could easily imagine someone picking intentionally for me as it's doing things I've praised in the past.

[Final Thoughts: Yeah, I kinda like this.]

[Later: Minor boost to rearrange things slightly.]

Okay, so, I don't like ending on something other than a multiple of 5 but I'm stopping at four songs today.

A: I still have things to do in the real world and I'm not convinced I could manage ten songs today.

B: I haven't updated the Public Song list with recent scores, so I need to take a few minutes to do that later. (Not long, but if one is already busy with other things...)

C: I apparently don't want to cut any of the next ten songs or so... so now I need to revise their scores and figure out what the next elimination even is because, apparently, it's nothing I actually have ready.

D: I'm slightly behind on adding Final Scores to songs that don't have them and I think most of my time tonight is going to be spent working on revising songs due to Point C instead of catching up on that end.

So, apologies. The last two of the morning are a double elimination of Haste songs, as we finally go up an entire point to the 56 point level.

============================

#606: Gustav Holst - First Suite in E-flat for Military Band, I. Chaconne (4:50):
https://youtu.be/rCIVXEEuMqM

Nominator: Haste [20/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 46.11

Revised Score: 41.O'Clock (treated as the ludicrously specific value of 41.03034964)

Final Score: 55.948582317

(First Reaction: The opening is quite nice, some lower toned instruments & an almost space-y type ambience, but then it quickly devolves into adequate classical music. It's vaguely forest-y, vaguely hopeful, but not enough to spur me into any odd tangents or overcome my inate bias against this type of classical-styled music.)

If you use Base-22 to convert the letters c, l, and k into numbers & use 0 for the O's and disregard the apostrophe entirely, then convert the numbers back into Base-10, you can actually give 0'cl0ck as a score. This experiment was more interesting than the song itself.

I am a bit disappointed that I didn't enjoy this track. RANKING SPOILER: None of the three Military Band songs here started with very good scores, but on a relisten, I suddenly got really into one of them and kinda fell in love with it? So I was hoping this particular nomination would also be something I loved after giving it another chance, but if anything, I like it less than I did to start with.

...at least it was interesting that it inspired a non-numerical rating? Those are rare.

[Final Thoughts: Relaxing, vaguely forest-like ambience. I kinda like this. I'd like to keep the ludicrous value, but I feel I need to move this song up into the 50 point tier... so let's give it another word converted into numbers.

It's "forest"]

[Later: ...No, I don't know why we were suddenly encoding messages in bases other than 10. I'm pretty sure we don't do that on any of the other tracks.]

Nominator: Haste [19/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 56.00
Revised Score: 56.00
Final Score: 56.00

(First Reaction: Another song that's so close to connecting with me emotionally, but is just missing a little something... as is, it's good, but I feel like it could jump up three tiers if I just connected a bit more strongly.)

!it's pretty and the right style of song, but it's missing some secret ingredient to make me fall in love with it.

[Final Thoughts: As short as that one sentence writeup was, I think that just about says it. I still feel it's a very pretty song and it's definitely in the style of music that I love, but it never resonates strongly enough to break out of the "kinda like" tier.]

Oh cool, my mystery song. For those following along with the topic, I had four minutes left in my nominations, so I grabbed a random song that was exactly four minutes long and nominated it. I deliberately had never heard it before. In fact, I only heard it for the first time now! Turns out I really like it, haha.

For a random song I wasn't sure if either of us would like, I'd say that's not a bad placement!

It was a neat song!

Going to try to get through six songs today; a half-day because I'm still running behind (busy day has become busy week), +1 to make up for yesterday only having 4. The first three drops:

============================

#604: The Dear Hunter - Mr. Usher (On His Way to Town):
https://open.spotify.com/track/6uVVr0cgubpmWkol8skkpg?si=134f9025c5534c1a

Nominator: NBIceman [20/22 Remaining]

Initial Score: 59.76
Revised Score: 57.40
Final Score: 52.50 [Upgraded to 53.03] [Upgraded to 53.7125] [Upgraded to 53.778 ] [Upgraded to 55.609] [Upgraded to 55.95] [Upgraded to 56.00004]

(First Reaction: It's always nice to get new villain songs. I'm not as into this one right now, but I'll admit it might grow on me with time.)

!I enjoy the song, but I'm not sure this type of 50's Sinatra style lounge song really suits the singer's voice. I appreciate the attempt at a different style, but that style's never been one of my favorites & it feels like this is a solid step below several of their villain songs.

[Final Thoughts: It's fine, but I think this may actually be my least favorite track on the album these days. This isn't my favorite style for Casey to sing, Mr. Usher is a random diabolus ex machina thrown in virtually out of nowhere (and significantly less interesting than the Pimp/Priest), and--since this is a pure setup song--nothing really gets to happen here. I know nothing can happen during a character introduction because all the time needs to spent on introducing them, but for all our assurances that he's a manipulator who'll kill people, he just... kinda... walks into town? And yes, obviously all the payoff is in future songs, but if I were to judge this song entirely on its own merits--which I'm hypothetically supposed to, though I hardly keep to that standard--this doesn't actually stand terribly well on its own.

The song isn't a miss--it does a fine job of hyping up the new villain & offers a distinct style you won't find elsewhere on the album (...that I recall, at least), but I'm just... not super into this one tonight.]

[Later: Moving up slightly.]

[Again: Just a tiny smidge of a boost for organizational purposes.]

[And Again: And what's probably going to be the final tiny boost. Maybe.]

[And Again And Again: Actually, I kinda like this tonight.]

[...And Again & Again: Minor boost to rearrange the list slightly.]

[& the next day, & the next day: I've hit an odd impasse. I do not want to give the song any more points and yet I do not wish to eliminate it either. It's odd because I obviously need to do one or the other--it either has the lowest score and should be eliminated or it's being given extra points and thus no longer being the lowest scoring song avoids eliminations.

And while its amusing having this song in an odd void where it simultaneously eliminated and not eliminated, I think I'm FINALLY cutting it. I say this every day, but there's really nothing else I'd rather cut at the moment.]

============================

-do you know what it's like to be built this way?-

============================

#603: Franchouchou - Hikari e (3:34):
https://open.spotify.com/track/6q0iBMVQpMzRJi2771HiCD?si=3cafab084be74350

Nominator: Player_0 [22/33 Remaining]

Initial Score: 47.82
Revised Score: 56.02
Final Score: 50.43 [Upgraded to 50.94] [Upgraded to 55.00000009] [Upgraded to 56.02]

(First Reaction: I'd have preferred an instrumental version of the song (simple piano songs may be one of my things at this exact moment in time).)

I'd still prefer a pure instrumental track, but this is a cute & sweet song. It's close to being so sweet that it radiates with me and gets infinity points, but something is off... I think a single singer giving a heartfelt performance would work better for this song than a group song, but I'd like to believe I have a better reason than that for this song missing the mark.

...not that I have any clue what that reason might be...

Good instrumentation, good idea, cute enough that i like it -but- missing something to really push it over the edge into greatness. Still, I do like it and feel like jumping it two tiers to kinda like level, so that's progress.

[Final Thoughts: I think I overcorrected a bit with the extra points on the second listen... it's sweet and I like the backing music, but I'm still not really connecting with it & feel like it fits in better with the early 50's instead of the mid-to-late 50's. Still, definitely much better than the Initial Score indicated.]

[Later: I want to like this. It's a cute farewell song (or tragicute, depending on when and how it's played), but I'm just not that into it.]

[And Later: ...FINE, I do kinda like it still.]

[And also later: Ehhhhhh.... alright, let's try putting this back to the Revised Score for a bit.]

[Later: Like Mr. Usher before it, this is in that odd state where I don't want to raise the score any further and don't really want to eliminate it either... but ths cuts have to start somewhere and, though I did take another day to reconsider things, I still think this is as far as the track goes.]

============================

-with only the power to push others away?-

#602: Kimihiro Abe - Rock Castle (3:17):

Nominator: Haste [18/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 57.31
Revised Score: 57.31
Final Score: 56.111

(First Reaction: A song fit for a monarch that rules an ancient, evil kingdom. It's both regal and foreboding , which is a fun combination of feelings--also, considering the name is "rock castle", is probably what the song was going for. Good for it.)

!Good ambience on this track, I like it. Not quite at the next level, but I do like it a reasonable amount.

[Final Thoughts: Ancient Technologically Advanced Evil Kingdom Army Theme.]

[Later: Another of the songs where I like them enough that I don't feel good cutting them, but also don't want to throw out any extra points.]

And we quickly end the morning, featuring someone else losing two songs in one post as we enter the top 600:

==============================

#601: KING MALA - She Calls Me Daddy (3:10):
https://youtu.be/P_T4bl0Na-Q

Nominator: Snake [28/32 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 63.48
Final Score: 56.15

(First Reaction: Nice. Usually I'm not really into songs about cheating or stealing lovers*, but I'll make an exception for songs as good as this one.

*Actually that's probably a lie considering several songs I love, but I seem attached to the lie and don't care to do reflect on the matter right now.)

!Yeah, I'm fairly into this track.

[Final Thoughts: Another one of those songs where I'm just not nearly as into it as I once I was. I still kinda like it,]

[Later: Sorry, but this song just doesn't click with me lately. Not entirely sure why, and I still kinda like it, but...]

==============================

-the top 600 will begin.... right now-

===================

#600: SiIvagunner - Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze - Frosty Fruits [2:54]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSOSU30T6nE

Nominator: paulg [35/52 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 63.11
Final Score: 56.21

(First Reaction: A distinct improvement on Levitate. I'm not sure if this is better than the regular version of Frosty Fruits, which has a pleasing atmosphere to it and is one of my favorite DKC series songs.)

!A good combination of songs, probably one of the best I've heard from this channel.

[Final Thoughts: I don't know why, but I'm really bouncing off of this one tonight. Both songs are good and it's a good combination, but I don't know, I'm not really feeling it. I still kinda like it, but... yeah.]

[Later: Similarly, this is another song that I'm not clicking with it in spite of liking it the first two times & I'm not clear why not.]

===================

-the Raetsel account isn't set up to post images, so...-

===================

#599: Joo Won - Fly Me To The Moon [3:02]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Qr_5nR8MO8

Nominator: paulg [34/52 Remaining]

Initial Score: 58.39
Revised Score: 60.00 [Upgraded to 60.0095]
Final Score: 56.22

(First Reaction: A fine rendition of one of the most well known songs of all time, though I find it hard to think of anything to say about songs that are as famous as this. Like, you should pretty much know much you'd enjoy hearing a talented woman covering "Fly Me To The Moon" regardless of anything I say here & I'm sure there are probably an infinite amount of articles written about the song if you want actual... thoughts.

Still, while this cover doesn't really do much to really make it the artist's own, it's a very enjoyable rendition and I like it.)

!I'm slightly more interested in this style of music at the moment than I was a few months ago, so this is getting a *tiny* boost to reach the next tier & join the new CLUMP.

[Slightly Later, before the time for a "Final Score": Actually, let's add a tiny fraction to the score to put it slightly above the exactly 60 point zone.]

[Final Thoughts: Ehh... and now I'm less in the mood for this of highly classic song... just one of those volatile tracks where I need to be in the right mood for it, apparently.]

[Later:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/6/6/3/AAXIRqAAD-jn.jpg

Certainly not the last Simpsons image of the topic & not the last time I'll be using that particular image, but it felt appropriate.]

I enjoy all the back and forth Mr. Usher caused you but I'm definitely not surprised to see it be the first Act V song to fall. Out of the 30 songs that make up Acts IV and V, it would be my #30 for sure. Still good, mind you - Casey Crescenzo could make a song out of a Terms of Service and still manage to get it stuck in my head from time to time - but as with DSO and Unconditional Surrender, it's not really the kind of thing I look for out of the Dear Hunter.

Alright, I guess my interest is piqued enough that I have to see what the hubbub is about.

https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x18hhin

(not quite the link I used; on the phone, a Facebook video is the first Google result while the tablet directs me here. Seems to be the same vid as far as I can tell, though this one has subtitles added)

Well that was incredibly tame and harmless. I mean, I guess I can see why someone might be offended by CGI internal organs, but that's just so... inoffensive that I don't get why anyone would have complained about it. I wouldn't say I'm disappointed as I didn't actually want something grotesque, but still, that's just so... unobjectionable and not at all what I was picturing.

-

I'm hoping to get through ten songs today; three songs for now, as I'm running late as usual:

====================

#598: Blue Man Group - Klein Mandelbrot (8:03):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm5DwJbE4i4

Nominator: rwlh [17/24 Remaining]

Initial Score: 50.02007
Revised Score: 64.00
Final Score: 56.20

(First Reaction: I was going to give the song a score of "50 O'Tool", but that is apparently "not a number" and "complete gibberish" and "probably breaks the formatting". So take this oddly precise number that kinda resembles the intended value, if you squint hard enough.

Song is a percussion heavy instrumental that doesn't make me think of anything in particular; it's sort-of neat-ish and not a bad listen, but I don't feel much of a story or connection with it.)

One of those songs where I've had a massive turn around in terms of how much I enjoy it, but can't quite work out why. I can understand my initial lack of interest in the song; not really an instrument style I typically go for, I don't really vibe with the track or feel any specific emotions/stories/hallucinations from it, etc, etc. But I liked this so much more on a relisten that I actually questioned if I had somehow listened to the wrong song the first time around. (I can find no way that would even be possible, so that is exceedingly unlikely).

So... this is a good song, apparently. I can't think of any other songs I wish to compare it to and I can't promise my sudden interest in it will hold up at any future dates, but I'm certainly into it now and I fear attempting to overanalyze things will ruin them. Let's not overcomplicate things and just say I like this.

[Final Thoughts: Another song where I regrettably cannot recapture the magic I once felt for it. Yeah, it must have been love, but it's over now It was all that I wanted, now I'm living without.]

====================

-where your ears at, blue cat?!-

====================

#597: Yamano Satoko - Doraemon no Uta (3:02):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxgYFKERwl0

Nominator: Handsomeboy [27/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 56.24
Revised Score: 54.67
Final Score: 52.50 [Upgraded to 53.06] [Upgraded to 55.00000005] [Upgraded to 56.24]

(First Reaction: It's a bouncy, very childish song that's catchier than it probably should be.)

!Reasonably fun for such a simple tune.

[Final Thoughts: Bouncy, fun, and cute but it starts to get a bit repetitive after several listens. I do have an obvious softspot for childish songs like this & it's hard to say no to a love song directed at a time-travelling robot cat, but it's not exactly a song that holds up well under repeated listens.]

[Later: Adorable enough to move this back up a bit to set it over a few other songs.]

[Later: Alright, fine, I do still kinda like this one.]

[L: Another boost, back up to the Initial Score, because I still don't want to eliminate it.]

[L~: Now that I've finally noticed that Doraemon doesn't have ears, all I can picture is the Blue Man scene from 30 Rock only with Tracy Jordan shouting "Blue Cat, where your eats at?!" instead:

https://youtu.be/G-vp0AprzrA?t=117

...This has no effect on anything, I just apparently really feel like making 30 Rock references this year. And for something slightly more on-topic: I do prefer this version of the song over the group version with the cast singing it.]

====================

-infrigio + copyright infringio > mario + luigi-

==================

#596: Fozzy - SOS (3:18):
https://youtu.be/iO5YHFvYLJM

Nominator: Mega_Mana [26/38 Remaining]

Initial Score: 66.69
Revised Score: 63.63
Final Score: 56.298

(First Reaction: I'm surprised that a pro wrestler did a metal cover of an ABBA song and even more surprised that it's actually good in an unironic way.)

!Still a strange song choice that works better than it had any right to.

[Final Thoughts: I still kinda like this, but the novelty of Chris Jericho covering ABBA music has kinda worn off by the third listen. It's fun and enjoyable, but honestly, I kinda prefer less-metal versions of the track over this one. Still, an interesting nomination that isn't just some novelty track.]

[Later: It is a fun cover and I did consider moving it back up a bit, but I think I'm okay with this placement. The verses aren't exactly hard, but I don't think the power Chris is going for suits them terribly well.]

I'm strangely comforted by the fact that there is an in-universe explanation for the lack of ears.

====================

#595: Trilok Gurtu - Tac, et demi [6:35]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U38WvJviv8w

Nominator: cakophon [13/20 Remaining]

Initial Score: 56.15
Revised Score: 55.499
Final Score: 56.30

(First Reaction: I'm usually not a fan of songs that are heavily focused on drums or percussion instruments in general, so the first two and a half minutes of the song are not something that appeals to me at all. It then transitions into something poppier for a few minutes and I kinda like that part, then it gets a bit... weird and bubbly in a way that I quite like for a bit, and finally ends with a section that's somewhere between the Pop & Weird sections (that is somehow not as good as either of them separately).

I'm really not sure how much I enjoyed it, but I'd say my general feelings are positive. They'd be more positive without that opening sequence, but the song turns around enough that it's not that big of a deal )

!The bubbly, aquatic feeling part is great but the other parts of this musical journey don't really resonate with me.

[Final Thoughts: I'm still not a fan of the first two minutes of this song and doubt I ever will be--it's just not my type of music, I'm afraid. On the plus side, that's less than half the song's runtime, and it goes places after that. I really like that bubbly portion and the part that immediately preceeds it is also rather nifty; the last section is... not quite for me either though, which makes my enjoyment of the song hard to quantify as I have strong & conflicting opinions on all of its phases. I think we'll just say that I kinda like this and move on? It's certainly different.]

#594: AEW, Jaycee Clark - Legitimate (2:36):
https://open.spotify.com/track/0zQS4BW0QOCkctoSyt4j2e?si=dc7725a54c4e4625

Nominator: CPU [20/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 51.00
Revised Score: 53.70
Final Score: 56.33

(First Reaction: Not a bad theme.

YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU'LL NEVER ESCAPE ME
YOU CAN HIDE BUT THERE'S NO CHANCE YOU'LL BREAK AWAY

Not sure why the official lyrics are ALL CAPS, but there's some nice almost villainous lyrics at that point.)

A fine theme with decent lyrics, though not one that gets me especially hyped or excites me to learn more about the wrestler. This feels like an "upper midcarder" theme; it's got enough quality that you know she isn't a jobber, but it isn't exactly a "this is designed to get a massive pop the second it hits" banger. Not that there's anything wrong with that... personally, I still miss McIntyre's Broken Dreams theme which was way too subdued to make a good wrestling theme, but was certainly more enjoyable to listen to on its own.

...though that was an unrelated detour, as usual. I apologize. I think the issue is that the singer is trying to yell, but her voice doesn't have enough power behind it: the clean vocals on the verses are nice, but when she tries to yell "MY GRIND IS LEGITIMATE!!" it lacks the intensity to actually sell Leyla as a badass. And that is what opens & closes the track, so it's a bit hard to get past it and focus on the aspects of the song that do work. Still, I do like it somewhat and it's a fine theme. It at least tries to have a signature shout/audio cue to signify Leyla's arrival, so while I don't particularly like said audio cue, it's at least distinct enough to be recognizable & loud enough to be heard over announcers/crowd noise.

[Final Thoughts: Good lyrics and a decent hook. Not at the highest tier of wrestling themes, but I kinda like it.]

Final Score: 56.37

(First Reaction: As a work of satire, it's amusing and I like making fun of Alex Jones & his ilk; as a song, I'm not finding a lot that I enjoy here.)

!I like the idea & trolling Alex Jones is always worth a quick laugh, but I'm not really into much of this musically.

[Final Thoughts:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lq9PJsS3-EY

Some nice fursuits in the video.]

Nominator: rwlh [16/24 Remaining]

Initial Score: 63.01
Revised Score: 56.393
Final Score: 56.393

(First Reaction: It's been quite a while since I listened to this version of this song. I'm much more familiar with the abridged Seals & Crofts version that would play on the radio, but I like this variant as well; there's some really nice electric guitar here that gives it a sexier vibe. Kinda fun to hear for a change of pace.)

!I'm just so used to the Seals & Crofts version of the song that this sounds kinda odd... some days I'm intrigued by the odd feelings, while others I just kinda want to go listen to the more familiar version.

[Final Thoughts: The abridged S&C version is an incredibly hard shot of nostalgia, but while this extended version is intriguing, I'm having a very hard time adjusting to it.It's just this special combination of "very familiar" and "very different" to be boderline uncomfortable at times... I usually like the Isley Brothers & I do kinda like this song, but I think I'll be sticking with the original.]

[Later: Like the instrumental version of Grazing in the Grass before it, this is a neat version of a song I really like but so different that I have a hard time judging it fairly.]

Revised Score: 54.60
Final Score: 56.41

(First Reaction: I know I should stop seeing what people on Genius say about songs, but how could I ever deprive myself of brilliant insights such as this:

Here, Grimes contemplates on the nature of death in comparison with imagination or escapism through art. She begs the question: who is really dead the living or the dead?

Ah, never change random internet commenters. Never change. Anywho, I do like this, so I'm just going to throw it into the Clump of 60 Point Songs and worry about the writeup later.)

!In this post we beg the question, which songs are truly eliminated - those that have been eliminated or the ones that haven't??

[Final Thoughts:

I, I've been thinking, I've been thinking
I, I could leave the world today
Everybody dies, we cut out their eyes and we dance like angels do

That's suitably bleak enough for me to kinda like this. The song also has a surprisingly pleasing vibe to it for something so upbeat and dance-y.]

Revised Score: 56.29
Final Score: 56.50

(First Reaction: I do like it, but it's a bit of a generic love song and the lyrics about bringing him out of the dark don't really work for me (I'm all mopey and embracing the darkness and rarr)... it's good and I enjoy it enough that I don't mind listening to it, but it's not quite for me.)_

!A fairly sweet love song, but perhaps a bit too sweet and optimistic for my current tastes.

[Final Thoughts: I do want to draw attention to one particularly clever line:

Gasping for air with the lungs of a lark

"From the Story Time with Casey

Theres a lot in the line Lungs of a lark. Larks are fragile, and since the line is sung by Hunter, he is also representing himself as a very fragile person trying to express himself. Also, a Lark can imitate other birds, and the Boy is mimicking another person too."

Now, see, that is clever. And one of the only times in this entire topic series that Genius had something relevant and interesting to say about a line; I know, I shouldn't check that site, but *SOMETIMES* you get an actual insight into something.

Anyway, this is a sweet song. Not the type of romance that personally appeals to me, but it's fairly nice and I kinda like it.]

(First Reaction: I'm not entirely clear on what this style of music was, but I think I like it enough to add it into the massive Clump of songs.)

!It's intriguing, but not quite at that 60 point level of intriguing.

[Final Thoughts: I suppose this is Electro Swing? It's kinda neat. Still in that "instruments that don't inspire anything specific" category, but neat enough that I still kinda like it.]

https://youtu.be/eJe-V_feS6I

Nominator: Haste [17/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 53.74
Revised Score: 51.67
Final Score: 56.80

(First Reaction: Japanese Forest music. Pretty neat! Not the greatest ambiance, but still enjoyable.)

I'm less into this song on the relisten... perhaps I'm just not in the mood to imagine walking through a forest, maybe it's just slower than I want right now, and maybe it's just unfortunate timing making it seem worse because the four most recent songs I've listened to have been notably better than I remembered, while this one is not. Either way... it's fine, but not really something I want to listen to right now and I don't feel the ambiance coming through as clearly as I did the first time.

[Final Thoughts: Ahh, there's that ambiance that I wasn't feeling the second time around. I'm aparently in the right mood for this and kinda like it tonight.]

Revised Score: 62.14
Final Score: 56.94

(First Reaction: A pretty good villain song. I do like the increased number of villain songs, though I'm not as into Mr. Usher at the moment.)

!The album doesn't really do a good job of making me care about Mr. Usher and I've never thought much about Ms. Leading at all, so from a story standpoint, this song is just "okay" for me... personally, I don't really care if Usher & Pimpin' Priest murder her, soo....

....thankfully, the song is good enough that I think it stands on its own merits well enough. I like the song and enjoy listening to it.

[Final Thoughts: I do still kinda like this, but it's another track that I'm bouncing off of tonight. Without having much interest in the villainy on display here, I'm finding it harder to get very invested in the song. It's good and I still kinda like it, but I think there are quite a few songs in the 55+ level that I'm more attached to than this song.]

[Later: It is a good song, but I'm just not clicking with it as of late.]

#586: Price Is Right Losing Horn [0:05]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVGg3atDdU8

Nominator: paulg [32/52 Remaining]

Initial Score: 53.76
Revised Score: 53.76
Final Score: 57.03

(First Reaction: It's iconic and perfect for what it is, but I don't think it's something I'd really choose to listen to or have any strong feelings towards.)

One of the most memorable and iconic "failure sounds" from any media and a masterclass in conveying things musically without wasting a single note, but not something I'd really choose to listen to. I don't have any nostalgia or positive feelings associated with the sound to make up for the fact that it's so incredibly short. It's fantastic for what it is, just not really much of a "song" here to listen to or rank & also no real flashbacks or anything to talk about either.

[Final Thoughts: Alright, I guess I kinda like this? I mean, it is one of the most iconic failure sounds in history, so that's probably worth something. Without any personal connection to the show or anything though, this can't get a lot of points for nostalgia -and- it's too short to really work as an actual song, so there's a hard limit on how far I want to carry it. High 50's feels like it's about the limit for this song.]

[Later: ...Is it ironic to usher in the start of a new whole point value with the sound of failure?]

Nominator: Handsomeboy [26/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 63.00
Revised Score: 64.66
Final Score: 57.12

(First Reaction: I don't know that destroyed cities and the stench of gunpowder really suit her image all that well, but the song's nice and there's some emotions in the last verse. I don't really know how to put it... "a strong conveyance of emotion" feels like an odd & clunky way of phrasing it, but I lack the vocabulary to describe it more succiently.)

!Good song.

]Final Thoughts: The backing beat feels a bit too thumping for me tonight, so I'm not really enjoying this as much as I usually do. It's a good setting and a surprisingly emotional song for one so... thumping, but I think it's more on the higher end of the "kinda like" tier than being far into the "like" tier.]

[Later: Sorry; while I usually like her voice and the story within this song, the beat is kinda dragging this down lately.]

Four more songs:

====================

#584: Sheena Ringo - Rush Job [5:09]:
https://open.spotify.com/track/4LhLlySK68fpU0KfA%678TC5

Nominator: cakophon [12/20 Remaining]

Initial Score: 55.369
Revised Score: 57.13
Final Score: 57.13

(First Reaction: I like the intro with all the assorted background noises and I think I like the lyrics to the song well enough, which seem to involve being so bored with the tedium of life that you can't even remember what it means to like something, but I find the actual music to be a bit... generic jpop; which shouldn't be a negative as I tend to love generic jpop, but something about this song makes it more of an "I like this song -but-" type song instead of something I simply like.)

!
Nothing can hold my interest; not much upsets me
What day was today anyway? Its not really an issue.
...
Tell me, what does it mean to love?
I cant remember.

Nice emotionally dead lyrics, but the song itself doesn't seem to resonate as strongly with me as I'd hope.

[Final Thoughts: Those writeups were way too harsh, but.. well, it's definitely the lyrics and the intro carrying the song. The music itself is nice enough, but doesn't leave a very lasting impression. I do kinda like it (the chorus is also fairly bouncy and catchy).]

https://open.spotify.com/track/6IIqjp84h4ms1gzFQl963o?si=d0ef795fde0843af

Nominator: Bane [25/38 Remaining]

Initial Score: 54.20
Revised Score: 52.00
Final Score: 57.15

(First Reaction: The intro and outro to this song are perfection with this type of low-ambiance that resonates quite strongly with me, but the main body of the work is a bit too experimentally busy in ways that run directly counter to the parts I enjoyed the most.)

*sighs* This song... some parts of it have this low buzzing that is absolutely fantastic and I want to give it 70 points. There are also some parts of it that are just... blargh, like 34 points worth of blargh. That averages out to 52 points which I'm going to say is close enough to an accurate score.

I don't care for her singing or the lyrics on this track, and most of the instruments are this kind of percussive "dunn-dunn-dunn" tapping on my ears that is just.... "blargh". But at around 3:20 some soft buzzing comes in along the rest of the song and I really do love that, enough that it greatly overpowers my negative feelings towards everything else that's still going on in the song alongside my buzzing. Putting it all together, I'm not really sure how many points I should be giving it because it has some extreme lows and highs, so I'm just going to stick with the average of 52 and call it a night.

[Final Thoughts: The soft buzzing is really nice and I don't particularly mind the rest of the song tonight. There's not nearly enough buzzing for my tastes, but I'd say I kinda like this--I mean, it features something I love, just not nearly enough of it.]

#582: Kenichiro Fukui - Shudder (2:27):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luwi50FwRlg

Nominator: Haste [16/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 53.40
Revised Score: 55.11
Final Score: 57.17

(First Reaction: ...Okay, I was not expecting the rap lyrics thrown in towards the end of the song. Unfortunately, I think the best part of this song was the intro.. I know it can't all be the "dramatic buildup" part, but once the beat drops then I lose quite a bit of interest in the song & the lyrics deflate any drama that was left.)

I really enjoy the effects used in the first... like, seven seconds or so. It's a very dramatic and intense build-up that very highly appeals to me. There's also a brief stretch that is a bit more mysterious, with intriguing chimes and a vaguely aquatic feel. That part is also pretty great. The main part of the song doesn't really appeal to me though... not something I dislike, but it's a style of intensity that I find a bit dull. It's neat how much ground the song covers in such a short time, but it also doesn't linger on any one aspect that I enjoy enough for me to fully enjoy it.

[Final Thoughts: Hard to score because I really like the intro & fairly like the "part that I'm calling aquatic even though it definitely isn't", but kinda dislike the actual main part of the song & it's so short that I never get to fully enjoy or hate any given part of it. I suppose I'll raise the score a bit because there are enough parts that I truly enjoy to justify it, but I'm honestly a bit surprised that I'm doing so.]

#581: Diablo Swing Orchestra - Celebremos Lo Inevitable [4:54]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyfcbeLfYbI&list=PLbqs-W3v0JokCip1yCvbDS5Diki_yhvvC&index=3

Nominator: CJones [15/18 Remaining]

Initial Score: 46.24
Revised Score: 46.21
Final Score: 57.16 [Upgraded to 57.18]

(First Reaction: This song doesn't really do anything for me. I don't have any strong feelings about the lyrics (Dia de Muertos & celebrating the dead are both topics that I have no real opinion on), the song spends most of its time feeling like "generic Latin music" (which isn't bad, but I'm sure there are better examples of the style than this song) & the more intense parts also aren't something I really enjoy... I wouldn't say it's bad or that I dislike it, but I'm not finding much that interests me either.)

I appreciate how much effort they put into the track. Honoring Dia de Muertos by creating their first Spanish language song & hiring a Mexican vocal coach to help with their pronunciation shows a real dedication to making sure they did everything right. I can't judge because I don't speak the language, but I've seen multiple comments claim that the singer actually sounds as though she were fluent in the language, so I will defer to their more educated judgment.

Unfortunately, while I like the idea and the variety the song brings, it's still not quite a style I prefer.

[Final Thoughts: Actually, I kinda like the more intense parts tonight.

Let's celebrate! Let's remember!
You are with me with every heartbeat
The memories surround us

Dancing with the dead... not a bad thing to imagine, really. Going to move this up a bit so it gets to the generally positive part of the ranking; I'm not crazy about it, but yeah, there are parts of this that I like.

...actually, let's give a few extra points towards the high 50's. I don't want this song dropping too soon.]

[Later: A song that is far, far better than the earlier scores indicated. I'm glad i moved it up here. I'm moving it up one more place in the rankings; not much, but it's something.]

============================

#580: Takeshi Miura, Hijiri Anze, and Sanae Kasahara - Opening: Claire Version (from Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X) (2:46):
https://youtu.be/gfgDt98JcGo

Nominator: Snake [27/32 Remaining]

Initial Score: 57.22
Revised Score: 57.22
Final Score: 57.22

(First Reaction: I prefer the spookier and more unsettling songs from the series, but this is interesting. It's mostly moderately high-intensity "rahh, let's get hyped to shoot things & blow stuff up, woo!" action movie opening stuff--but then we have MYSTERIOUS PIANO OUTRO which feels like it was part of a different song that was just bolted onto the end of the first part. And both parts are pretty good! I largely enjoyed it.)

!Two good halves that seem unrelated, but go together well enough. Don't really have a preference for either of them either, which is interesting... usually I vastly prefer one segment, but both sides of this song are equally neat.

[Final Thoughts: Less into the main song than usual, but more into the brief piano outro so let's just say it evens out to the score it already had.]

#579: Prince & The Revolution - America (3:43):
https://youtu.be/qYTqh-fPDsg

Nominator: Metalmind [22/25 Remaining]

Initial Score: 61.06
Revised Score: 57.25
Final Score: 57.25

(First Reaction: I like this, but I don't feel up to commenting on it tonight. Also, I should listen to the full, 22 minute long version at some point.)

!
Also, I should listen to the full, 22 minute long version at some point.

...Should we though? Should we?

[Final Thoughts: Definitely shouldn't have listened to the 22 minute long extended single version. That was just repetitive and mindless, dragging on as long as it possibly could for no reason other than to be long. Feel free to listen to it yourself, if you want, though I certainly don't recommend the experience:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wMijqk2cPw

Back on topic, I really don't feel like analyizing lyrics this serious at the moment. Nuclear war, communism, racism, poverty... I'm not saying I dislike serious songs, but I am saying that I can't really do justice to the subject matter and I'm at least self-aware enough to not make any of my usual jokes/random tangents on a writeup for a song like this. I'll say that it has a very catchy chorus, the verses cover a lot of topics, and it manages to be serious & direct without being completely overwhelming. I do have problems with songs that try to tackle serious issues while lacking any serious punch; Prince, for his part, doesn't seem to really shy away from any of the topics and actually makes the points he wants to make. I may not wish to discuss said points at a largely comedic ranking, but I respect him and the song.]

Nominator: DoctorJimmy [16/24 Remaining]

Initial Score: I want to give it a nonsensical value like "60.00-10p", but for formatting reasons, I guess I'll go with a traditional value like "59.99999"
Revised Score: 52.96
Final Score: 57.29

(First Reaction: Not one of my typical musical styles, but it's reasonably fun and energetic.)

!I'm apparently less in the mood for this type of swing music than I was originally. It's not bad or anything, but not quite a genre that I'm often into.

[Final Thoughts: Somewhere between the Initial Score and Revised Score feels accurate. This is a fairly nifty example of a style I don't listen to often, but it's a bit further from the 60 point tier than the original score implied. Let's go with something in the 57 point range--firmly in the "I kinda like this" zone.]

Nominator: Player_0 [20/33 Remaining]

Initial Score: 66.60 [upgraded to 73.00]
Revised Score: 54.12
Final Score: 57.30

(First Reaction: Ooh, now this is a good song.

*leaves the writeup at that, in spite of the fact that Future Raetsel is going to complain about the fact that she didn't even try to type anything*

[The score was upgraded for reasons that are equally not explained.])

!I'm not upset about leaving the writeup at nothing, I leave lot of writeups at nothing, but I am disappointed that there's no indication as to what we liked about this? Or why it jumped up a tier? Because I kinda like the song tonight, but I legitimately have no idea how it rose to the "really liked" tier to even guess why it's not working too well for me tonight.

[Final Thoughts: I guess some aspect of me really, really likes this... but I don't know which one or why. I kinda like it? It's nice, I suppose.]

Initial Score: 66.92
Revised Score: 60.00
FInal Score: 57.33

(First Reaction: Third verse is... better than good, but not quite great; Lyrics about being an empty shell and broken are pretty much always welcome. None of the other verses or choruses come close to the quality of the third, but they're at least good or good enough. I liked this.)

!A catchy chorus and one good verse. Clearly in the "I like this tier", but I think it's more at the start of the tier than the at the higher-end of it.

[Final Thoughts; For some unknown reason when I saw the song title this time, I was expecting some sort of Beggin' Strips commercial:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vnit_xL1hE

Unfortunately, there is no Beggin' Strips theme song for anyone to have nominated. Le sigh.

This song has some good lyrics & a very catchy hook for its chorus, but I'm not clicking with it that much tonight, I'm afraid.]

(First Reaction: Feels like the intro theme to a cyberpunk thriller, something rather Snatcher-esque. Certainly works for me since I like Snatcher.)

!Cybernetic, in a fun way.

[Final Thoughts: Feels way too upbeat for a thriller, so once again, I have no idea what past me was listening to. It's nifty, though not inspiring any specific reactions tonight. I like the outro, with its slow fade out and whispering ghost children.]

Final Score: 57.38

(First Reaction: It's a nice song, but it's not really clicking with me for some reason.)

!Nice song, cute voice, but no particular lyrics or moments that I want to glomp onto. Some of the auto-translated lyrics are close

I can't be honest with myself
it was sad
Both the weak me and the strong me
Because it's all the real me

Like, that's vaguely dissociation adjacent, but... I dunno. I *like* the song, just kinda a mid-50's level of like.

[Final Thoughts: Yeah, I kinda like this. The quiet opening is something that I actually quite like and her voice is both cute & fitting for the song.]

(First Reaction: Slightly trippy drug-filled rave music. Good for what it is, though as usual I don't really connect with the subject matter. I feel like I'm usually more into the Gorillaz songs than this one, but I still kinda like it.]

!A pretty good song. Dancing & raves aren't exactly my type of thing, but it's catchy enough that I'm actually kinda into this tonight. I like it.

Revised Score: 56.14
Final Score: 57.402030

(First Reaction: Not a bad groove, though a bit disjointed. I haven't tried to isolate exactly which parts of the song I really enjoy, but it definitely has its ups and downs. I might be letting the downs impact the score a bit more than they should... one of those things I'll have to think about when it's time to reevaluate this song.)

I still can't work out anything I want to say about this, but apparently I like it more than I did before.

[Final Thoughts: I still don't really know what to say about this, but I kinda groove to it, so yeah this is pretty neat.]

[Later: This isn't relevant to anything, but somehow,,I was never able to get into the Jet Set Radio/Jet Grind Radio games or their soundtracks. The original definitely had a cool style to it, but I dunno, it never really clicked.]

And three more to finish off the morning:

================

#571: Hunter Van Brocklin - Oreads & Nereids (The Shapers) [2:06]:
https://iiiypad.bandcamp.com/track/oreads-nereids-the-shapers

Nominator: Kopazzynth [13/21 Remaining]

Initial Score: 59.782
Revised Score: 59.782
Final Score: 57.44

(First Reaction: Glitchy Game Boy music. I think I'd have preferred a more traditional Game Boy song, but this is a nice soundfont to play around with. Wouldnt mind listening to some other songs on the album and I'm somehow still always surprised whenever sergio's name appears on something I'm listening to. It's almost like you're all "actual people" with "lives" who "occasionally do things" or something.)

!Interesting and something I'd like to hear more of, but not quite at that 60 point level of enjoyment (though definite credit for giving me some static-like sounds. Not very many songs with static-like sounds, just in general.)

[Final Thoughts: It's a very enjoyable soundfont and likely the best song on the EP (though "Luna & Shade in Perfect Harmony" is intriguing in ways I lack the time to properly investigate).]

#570: Alan Doyle, Damhnait Doyle, Keith Power - Sleeping in the Cold Below (from Warframe) (3:31):
https://open.spotify.com/track/7nq8DgNdgYGihJrZYB221C?si=863d94f0b03548a9

Nominator: CPU [18/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 50.30
Revised Score: 60.00
Final Score: 57.45

(First Reaction: One of many tehnically fine songs that doesn't do a lot for me. It's very.... "trudging through the snow fields"-y, slow & cold and memorable but do you really want to remember freezing to death? It's not one of the better ways to die, or so I've been told.)

This is another of those songs where I suddenly like it and haven't quite worked out the "why" I like it part. Listened to it three times in a row in search of something to say and haven't gotten anywhere, but the fact that I'm' willing to listen to it repeatedly is a pretty good sign that I enjoy it well enough...

...This song is suitably bleak since it's apparently a "space shanty for a suicide mission", so ya know, that's fun and I am into bleak and fiction and the feeling of freezing to death is an E-X-P-E-R-I-E-N-C-E and I'm also into those, but I don't think those are the reasons I like this song. Largely because those are things I like and "oh hey, this song is doing things I like" would be a much easier writeup that I have made many times in the past and will make many times in the future. I'm presumably drawn here for some other reason.

....eh, whatever, it's going up a tier and I'll either figure out why later or I won't. Mew.

[Final Thoughts: I'm not sure why I was so into this song that one day, but I still kinda like this & feel good having it a ways up above the Wall.]

#569: Diablo Swing Orchestra - The Prima Donna Gauntlet [5:05]:

Nominator: CJones [14/18 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 59.00
Final Score: 57.46

(First Reaction: Trying to listen to this album in one sitting was a mistake... I think I like this song, but I'm getting all wobbly and exhausted from moments like the LOUD METAL OUTRO TO THIS SONG WHAT IS LOUD AND SUCH. Just going to add this to the clump and revisit it on another day.)

!The singing gets a bit too high-pitched in places and some of it is more metal inspired than I'd like (particularly the aforementioned outro)... I still mostly like it, but I think there's enough holding it back that it's not quite at that "I can say "I like this" without any added caveats" tier.

[Final Thoughts:

Justice be served, and their world we'll unmake
They can save all their prayers 'cause they won't be heard
Their echo so hollow, excuses absurd

That's a fun verse.]

I don't really have much to say about Melpomene; it's a nice little love song but I'm not a big fan of the structure. Another one that, like Mr. Usher, isn't heart wrenching to see go out.

The Flame (Is Gone) is a tougher cut. Love Casey's vocals in that song and with it being such a climactic moment in the story it's definitely a track that sticks in my mind pretty strongly. Your issues with Usher as a villain are totally fair, though. I guess where we differ most significantly is that I really love the Ms. Leading character so that's an extra emotional tick. She has the most tragic story of anyone in the Acts and probably deserves it the least.

Bummed to see Prima Donna Gauntlet drop, too; that's probably a top 3 Swagger and Stroll track for me. I always love the more avant-garde offerings from DSO but they go to that more traditional heavy metal sound and it's always a standout (Exit Strategy of a Wrecking Ball is still one of their best songs). I think it's perfectly placed as a precursor to Ceasefire but I guess I'll save some of my thoughts there until that one drops too.

Agreed. And yeah, Exit Strategy is great. Pandora's Pinata is my second favorite DSO album, after Swagger and Stroll.

Unfortunately, Prima Donna Gauntlet is one of the songs that suffers the most from DSOs questionable mixing and mastering decisions for this album. Jig of the Century and War Painted Valentine are also major offenders. All of their previous albums have substantially better sound quality than this one. Which is a real shame, because compositionally, Swagger and Stroll is easily my favorite. I just wish it sounded as good as the others.

Here's a comparison, for anyone interested:

Should have went with that video for the Catgroove nominaton in the hopes that dancing AC cat villagers might (subconsciously) boost the score a little (but couldn't find a version of them dancing to the full song).

The video does actually enhance my enjoyment of the song's intro a fair amount with the way it properly syncs with things, making it easier to get engrossed in it. ...But once it transitions to the full disco, it doesn't really feel as perfectly in sync and doesn't help much. (And I'd rather not get started on the giant face that drops in at the end). I don't think it would have helped the score (especially since it ends so abruptly), but it was worth watching.

Very late this morning, but four songs to start off with. Should almost definitely get through 10 today, just a bit delayed.

============================

#568: Ringo Sheena - The Creamy Season (4:17):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KG_DVSxukho

Nominator: DoctorJimmy [15/24 Remaining]

Initial Score: 63.11
Revised Score: 63.20
Final Score: 57.496

(First Reaction: I typically don't enjoy anything related to food or food metaphors--I don't seem to have any tragic backstory or rationale for this, it's just a thing--but the lyrical references to time melting and the world being destroyed allow for such delightfully twisted alternative readings of the song that I like this.)

!Still not my first choice of metaphor, but I like this.

[Final Thoughts: Moving this down slightly; I do still love the references to time melting and the audio gets mildly distorted at the bridge, but I'm not quite as attached to the song as I was the first two times. Still, I do kinda like it and it manages to pull off food references in a way I enjoy, so well done.]

#567: Spiritbox - Hurt You (3:46):
https://open.spotify.com/track/2rFaJ6NRIRWn335tQr8lWD?si=958a1570a05645c2

Nominator: BlackDra90n [21/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 66.00
Revised Score: 66.00
Final Score: 57.66

(First Reaction: I like this song. I do wish the verses were a bit milder, but I'm definitely here for the choruses and I suppose the harshness does work in context.)

!Angry verses & beautiful choruses combine into something I like; not quite enough to move it up a tier, but it's definitely on the higher end of the 60 point tier.

[Final Thoughts: The choruses are still catchy and melodic, but the rest of the song is... perhaps a bit too loud and intense for my blood at the moment.]

=========================================

-one whole entire day-

========================

#566: George Lam - (A Life of Numbers) [Live] (5:00):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJ2nXMhB-UQ

Nominator: Handsomeboy [25/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 40.22
Revised Score: 54.38
Final Score: 57.68

(First Reaction: Usually I love George Lam, but rapidly firing off a stream of numbers isn't the best use of his voice & I'm not exactly tuning into his songs to hear overused classical music. The song just feels more baffling than anything else.)

Honestly, I just don't want to hear the particular classical music pieces in this song. George Lam has a very comforting voice that I enjoy hearing again and, while I stand by my argument that this isn't the best use of his voice, I don't have any real animosity towards the lyrics; I don't think the song makes much of a point about the impact numbers have on our lives, but... yeah, sure, I'll agree in a broad sense that arbitrary statistics have too much influence. And I can't really complain about the numbers because I absolutely love the song "Children of the City" which also ends with a list of numbers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHUVqV5CO6w

"Children of the City" uses the numbers to give a sense of hopelessness and despair; the singer cannot go home until they read the value of E, which goes on for infinity, rendering the song into a Sisyphean nightmare with no escape. "A Life of Numbers" has a more metaphorical approach, starting with a number that sounds like birth & ending with one that sounds like death, with an utter barrage of potentially random nonsense inbetween--it's clever and fits the song well, so let's say both artists took the idea of using numbers for lyrics in very interesting ways and succeeded.

But then I just don't really want to hear "Minuet in G" (often attribute to Bach, but apparently by Christian Petzold) and as much as I love George Lam's voice, him reciting numbers over the track doesn't help as much as I'd like it to. And the song really loses me in the middle, where we cut away from him entirely to play Hoe-Down from Rodeo... though it does kinda make me want some BEEF:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tviyAIS9c_U

And that commercial also has numbers in it! Coincidence?? Yes.

I am a bit confused that this interlude isn't part of the album version of "A Life of Numbers":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2suq0_4knk

Which has a completely different interlude with some pleasing beeps and rotary phone sounds, as well as being much shorter, so you're not left wondering where George Lam went or why we're suddenly listening to a totally different song. I prefer the album version, but I'll admit to seeing the appeal of a live orchestra performing music, it's just.... not what I'm looking for generally. Still, the nominated live version is a better and more clever song than I gave it credit for, I just had to take a bit of time to work through my personal issues with the other songs contained here before I could appreciate it.

[Final Thoughts: I like George Lam enough that he carries this song into the "kinda like" tier, but I'll maintain that reciting a list of numbers--even in a very clever way--is not the most compelling use of his talents and the orchestral music choices aren't exactly my first choice either. Very well performed, somewhat thought provoking, far more clever than it appears at first glance, but not something I click with enough to reach the 60 point tier.

Though it is on a general upward trajectory and has gone up multiple tiers already, so it could well reach that in the future.]

#565: Mac Startup Sound [0:03]:

Nominator: paulg [31/52 Remaining]

Initial Score: 50.97
Revised Score: 56.11
Final Score: 57.726

(First Reaction: It's a very good note, but even I have a hard time giving many points for one note.)

Okay so I kinda love this note. It has weight, power, and it reverberates through my soul with AWE-INSPIRING MAJESTY. But.. like... it's literally one note.

[Final Thoughts: Is it the best note ever?? Maybe.]

[Later: It is strangely tempting to give this even more points, but I think this is as far as I want to carry this particular note. Perhaps if I ever owned a Mac to have some nostalgia or personal connection to this note...]

Nominator: Bane [24/38 Remaining]

Initial Score: 58.15
Revised Score: 62.05
Final Score: 57.73

(First Reaction: A great song, though perhaps not one I'm interested in reacting to at the moment.)

!Not many Industrial Pop songs, so that's fairly neat.

The singer further explained the song: "Imagine you're in a club full of heavy metal types and grunge people; 'Army of Me' is like someone's granny blasting out over the PA and saying, 'Snap out of it! Stop whining! Wash your hair! Smarten yourself up!'"

Good message, though not one I'm especially interested in at the moment... not that I don't need to hear it, mind you.

[Final Thoughts: Not a lot to add here. Great song, but I'm not done being a whiny twit, so... not quite what I want, valuable as it is.]

============================

#563: Clifford Brown - Joy Spring (3:18):
https://youtu.be/T2gHrmxhA0s

Nominator: Haste [15/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 43.21
Revised Score: 55.79
Final Score: 55.79 [Upgraded to 55.96] [Upgraded to 57.75]

(First Reaction: It wasn't intentional for the score to countdown like that, but now that's all I can focus on. *blinks*

Anyway, I'm sorry, but this is the type of very traditional instrumental music that doesn't do much for me. Not something really worth avoiding, but not something I particularly wanted to hear either.)

I think I'm in an oddly good mood today, as I seem to be generally liking every song. This still isn't one of my preferred styles, but we've got some fine trumpet playing here & "happy jazz" is definitely a genre I'm not familiar with. This is a fun and enjoyable look at something that I'd normally never listen to and a fine addition to the topic.

...Somehow I thought those sentences would take up more space than they actually did. I can't think of anything to add about the song itself, so why not waste time with some trivia? DID YOU KNOW: The Manhattan Transfer did a lyrical cover of this song titled "Sing Joy Spring"?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mn5KLRaZzwU

I'm not a fan of that version, but it's pretty neat to hear something from the group again. It's been a long time since their song "Cantaloop (Flip Out!)" was nominated. I still go back and listen to that one every few months and I still have no idea what to make of it. I guess I like it quite a bit since it's had much more staying power than its score would have indicated and it's definitely unique.

...okay so talking about an unrelated song to fill time isn't exactly the hallmark of a good writeup, but I definitely filled space, I can say that much.

[FInal Thoughts: It's a pleasant song that's easy to listen to, so it serves as a pretty good introduction to the things I kinda like tier.

...well, since it's not at exactly 55 points, it's not really an "introduction" as some other songs have likely been eliminated at that tier before it, but you know what I meant.]

[Later: A minor boost to the score for organizational purposes.]

[Slightly Later: Eh, let's try giving this song an extra point. It's kinda neat.]

============================

===================

#562: The Beach Boys - That's Not Me [2:31]:

Nominator: Lasa [7/14 Remaining]

Initial Score: 57.80
Revised Score: 57.80
Final Score: 57.80?

(First Reaction: Sweet, but not one of my favorites from the band.)

!I'll never pass on a chance to listen to more of The Beach Boys. Still not my favorite from the album, but it's pretty good and I enjoy it.

[Final Thoughts: I can't decide if I want to move this song up any further or not, so I'm just setting the score at 57.80 as a placeholder for now.]

[Later: It's a nice song and the sentiment within it is sweet, but happily going back to your hometown is rather the opposite of what I'd like for a song. Give me songs about how much the singer's hometown sucks & they hate everyone there. So.... I do kinda like this; I mean, it's a band I've got some nostalgia for & it's performed well, so I'm not against listening to it or anything.]

===================

#561: Monokaki Aer - Yoigoshi ni Kuusou Shoujo (3:24):
https://youtu.be/JU00PneVFFw

Nominator: UF8 [21/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 63.18
Revised Score: 57.84
Final Score: 57.84

(First Reaction: A sleepless midnight with no tomorrow... well, this song gets a lot of easy points for lyrical content. The performance is technically impressive, but I'm not quite as into the fast-paced whispered talking type of singing going on here--I'm not opposed to it, it's just not likely my first choice in terms of singing styles. Still, a good song with lyrics that are the type of things I look for, so well done with this one.

!Ehhh.... can't think of anything I really want to say here at the moment either...

[Final Thoughts: Another for the "good song I don't have much to say about" pile.]

#560: Exodus to Infinity - King Other (5:36)_:

Nominator: NBIceman [17/22 Remaining ]

Initial Score: 70.00
Revised Score: 63.989
Final Score: 57.90

(First Reaction: ...I have no idea what I just listened to and am baffled in a way that typically only comes from a select few of TunnelScene's nominations, and I mean that in a good way, it's very difficult to find things that trigger the good type of confusion. Even more baffling is that this is somehow a one man band?? Which doesn't seem possible, but hey, good for him.

I have no real idea how to score this, so I'm just going to throw it onto the 70 point tier and see where it goes from there.)

!Now that the song isn't as unexpected, I think I'm feeling this more as an early-to-mid 60's type song; it's impressive and mystifying, but it's not something that I REALLY like like the 70 point songs... more of a "wow, this is neat" more general sort of liking.

[Final Thoughts: Intriguing and impressive, but no longer surprising and on a rather sharp decline. This format with repeated listens doesn't seem to be too kind to very surprising songs since the surprise factor will typically have worn off well before the end.]

============================

-*yawns*-

====================

#559: Nana Mouskouri - Ca vient de toi (3:21):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmL00KzM2uA

Nominator: rwlh [15/24 Remaining]

Initial Score: 55.26
Revised Score: 52.76
Final Score: 57.93

(First Reaction: It's nice to have a French pop song, but the lyrics feel a bit generic and the song doesn't do a lot for me--it's kinda interesting when it increases in tempo, but "briefly speeding up" isn't exactly a new gimmick. But I'm being far too harsh for no good reason; it's nice.)

!Still fairly nice, but not something I have strong feelings about. It's kind of towards the middle of the French pop songs nominated this year; Yelle has a fair number of songs both below & above this one.

[Final Thoughts: It's cheating, but I think I'm going to swap out the nominated link with this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VsuBcznJPQ

Obviously the nominated one is the high quality upload, but the lowered audio quality here appeals to me on this specific track. There's a sense of listening to this in the 60's on a slightly damaged record player, a quaint nostalgia for an era that I wasn't part of, like a comforting flashback to a past life. This version of the track pleases me.

...It's only a few points so it's far from being the most drastic way I've altered a song's score by changing the link, but it's still something I feel like doing & I'm sticking with it.]

[Later: Today I slightly prefer the cleaner version of the song that was actually nominated... though I like having both links here, so I can choose between the audio qualities as desired.]

Should definitely wait for @NBIceman to answer as he's the board's resident superfan, but in the interest of not leaving you hanging indefinitely for an answer, I think he'll probably suggest starting at "Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise. It's a fantastic album, it's the one he used to get me into the band (hence why I think he'd probably use it to get anyone else into them), and I don't think you need much knowledge of the earlier Acts to enjoy the story.

That being said, definitely give him another day or two to respond as there are very good reasons you should be getting answers from him directly.

That is an interesting interpretation, though I think some of the lines imply going back:

I could try to be big in the eyes of the world
What matters to me is what I could be to just one girl

I'm a little bit scared
'Cause I haven't been home in a long time

I feel like if he was staying in the city, it'd be wondering what he could have been rather than the more optimistic "could be" which implies he's still hoping to go back and resume their relationship. And being scared about returning home... well, I suppose that one could go either way actually, though I read it as being nervous about an imminent trip instead of not making the trip back home.

Though I should point out that he also says he lays alone every night and dreams of home, so I do definitely see a very solid argument in favor of your interpretation as well.

(First Reaction: Perhaps a bit too short. It's very close to inspiring something, but it feels like the track ends before it ever really reaches the point it needs to. Perhaps I'll be able to find what I want from it on the second or third listen.)

!Some mixed emotions on this track. It kinda feels like "preparing to set off on an adventure", "dark and mysterious", "COMPUTER WORLD", and "slightly epic". It never really embodies any one emotion or feeling, but it sounds neat and it's an interesting experience.

[Final Thoughts: I enjoy the musical journey this song takes me on, but as usual, I'd likely prefer something that perfected one aspect of the journey over a song that does a lot during its runtime. This is also a bit too short for me to get fully invested in... I do like it, but I'm thinking I like everything else at the 60 point level a bit more.]

Nominator: DoctorJimmy [14/24 Remaining]

Initial Score: 80.00
Revised Score: 66,34
Final Score: 57.96

(First Reaction: A thoroughly enjoyable tale about a life of crime. There's something delightfully sinister in his voice and, while the song seems like it should be a bit too intense for my tastes, I think I really enjoyed this one.)

!It's still an interesting song and I'm glad it was included, but I'm not getting as drawn into his voice this time around and find the song more... intriguing than something I'd say I love. Very much one of those "great songs that I need to be in the right mood to appreciate" type tracks.

[Final Thoughts: Now see, this is the type of video that could arguably use a content warning message. I wouldn't bother and don't care, but it's certainly bloodier and more graphic than I would expect. (Also completely irrelevant to the song, but that's neither here-nor-there I suppose.)

Anyway, this is another of those songs where I still kinda like them, but it's fallen pretty hard. There's a compelling story here, but I'm not that into the music itself... like I got excited when it was time to listen to this again because I remember kinda loving it, but I never come close to recapturing that magic on any other listen.]

Revised Score: 59.60
Final Score: 58.00

(First Reaction: You thought I wouldn't notice the singer from those Architects song, but I am getting slightly better at looking for these connections! ...I'll comment on the song itself on another day.)

!I feel like this song would have been a tremendous hit if I'd listened to it during that brief period where I was obsessed with metal... this blend of spoken word, clean vocals, and screaming is exactly the type of thing I would have completely fallen in love with.

...Unfortunately, I'm not really in a metal mood at this exact moment... I think this song is more a victim of bad timing on when it comes up to be listened than anything else.

[Final Thoughts: The chorus where Sam's doing that... "clean vocals, but yelling but quietly yelling" is the type of thing I'm looking for.]

I feel like if he was staying in the city, it'd be wondering what he could have been rather than the more optimistic "could be" which implies he's still hoping to go back and resume their relationship. And being scared about returning home... well, I suppose that one could go either way actually, though I read it as being nervous about an imminent trip instead of not making the trip back home.

that's true, i kinda forgot about the "little bit scared" part when i made that post. that being said, it's possible that he's happy about being back home but the lyrics never clarify if he does get back with his ex-girlfriend. sure, he clearly WANTS her back but does she accept his offer? in any case, at least it doesn't end with an "i'm back home and now everything is great again" part or whatever. i would have liked the lyrics a lot less if it would have ended that way!

unrelated to this: i forgot to mention this before but nice to see a clifford brown nomination!

Four more drops, including two more from the same nominator:

============================

#555: Son Lux - Dream State (5:02):
https://open.spotify.com/track/1jXRr5iln16y27EM85HMJ3?si=Deka8ttSTIqJRJbxpYeHjQ

Nominator: Jesse Custer [26/29 Remaining]

Initial Score: 65.00
Revised Score: 53.79
Final Score: 58.02

(First Reaction: I don't know the musical term for it, the part starting at 2:25 greatly appeals to me. The early parts of the song were kinda "meh", but then it cuts to almost total silence and just kinda floats in a void for a minute (I do love my endless voids), before the drums decide to mimic a heartbeat, slowly increasing in intensity as the song begins to pick back up... that wss wondrous. The singing just doesn't work with that environment though and I get pulled out of my trance as soon as his voice comes back in,

That musical void was almost panic attack inducing, like my heart wanted to start beating faster to match the accelerating drums, as the song does its best to simulate a panic-induced heart attack of someone trapped in an all-consuming darkness that is shattering their mind. And then some guy shows up. And it's like, hey, you, singer guy: Who invited you to my void of non-existence?

I give the void 100 points and 30 points to the actual song parts, which I guess I'll average to 65 for now. That doesn't quite feel right... like the actual song portion is significantly longer than the void, so it should have a greater influence on the final score. BUT... it did have one section that was perfect, so I suppose I'll let the 65 stand as a first reaction.)

!Sadly, the all-consuming void loses some of its intensity when you know it's coming up, so I'm not completely in love with that part of the song as I was initially... but I also like the singing somewhat this time around, so the song feels like a more consistent "early-mid 50's" point song as opposed to the chaotic "I both incredibly love and actively dislike this" reaction the song had originally.

[Final Thoughts: Not a bad song. His singing has grown on me a bit--or at least, I like the lyrics. Reminiscing about a past with feelings that can't be reclaimed and leaving the day for a brighter night are definitely subject matters that play rather well with me & it does have a pretty nice musical void (I do still love my falling voids).]

Nominator: rwlh [14/24 Remaining]

Initial Score: 56.3302
Revised Score: 56.34
Final Score: 58.025

(First Reaction: It's quite pleasant.. I'm not wild about it, but it makes for good background music and I like it well enough.)

!Still very pleasant and easy to listen to, rounding the score up slightly because it doesn't feel like it needs such a specific number.

[Final Thoughts: Not a lot to say here, apart from the standard "good instrumental that doesn't make me think of anything specific", but it's a very pleasant song that goes up in placement a bit each time.]

Revised Score: 58.04
Final Score: 58.04

(First Reaction: Yes, I like moons.

...that's it, that's the writeup.)

!The slow song compliments her sensual voice quite well and I'd be interested in trying more of her work later. Not sure I'd find anything that I really like, but she seems to be highly talented and well aware of what type of songs suit her.

[Final Thoughts: A good song all around. Good band, good singing, good lyrics; nothing I love enough to make it jump to the next tier, but always a very welcome song to hear.]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 56.13
Final Score: 58.065

(First Reaction: Future music, like we're running through the streets of Neo Tokyo which is like Regular Tokyo, only everything is neon--especially blue. Lots of neon blue lightning on basically everything. This song is the most neon blue song ever recorded.

...also, I now have Icehouse - Electric Blue stuck in my head thanks to saying the word "blue" so much:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUFOVu1CurM

)

!Zippy-zappy future instrumental. Neat, though for whatever reason I'm less into it now.

[Final Thoughts: I enjoy this more than the second time, though not quite at the 60 point level like the first time. Averaging the scores gives "58.065" which feels like a good placement for this. It's an enjoyable Bright Neon Future Jam; not quite one I vibe with enough to go back up a whole tier, but definitely on the higher end of the "kinda like" grouping.]

#551: Doris Day - It Could Happen to You (3:13):

Nominator: Snake [26/32 Remaining]

Initial Score: 66.58
Revised Score: 54.367
Final Score: 58.08

(First Reaction: I've been on a bit of a 60s pop kick lately, mostly The Buckinghams, as well as Gary Lewis & The Playboys, so this song fits in fairly well. A bit softer than mainstream pop, but there's certainly nothing wrong with that. Just a very good song that could slide into my current "On Repeat" list without seeming even the slightest bit out of place.

Which sounds like I'm putting this song a bit too low, but I don't want to jump it up another tier. At the moment, anyway.)

!It's sweet & romantic, but that's not quite something I'm in the mood for right now... I'll acknowledge that it's a great song and that there definitely are times when I'll love it, but now isn't quite the time for it.

[Final Thoughts: It's pretty. I'm not.... quite in the mood for this style of romance, but I do kinda like it. She's got a beautiful voice and it's quite sweet.]

#550: YuNi - Kirai (3:19):
https://youtu.be/_kCDAegLHlk

Nominator: UF8 [20/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 58.13
Revised Score: 58.97
Final Score: 58.10

(First Reaction: I rather like the auto-translated version of the first verse:

The wound is more than I imagined
"It hurts"
In an unknown place where I stopped

But I'm not super-into the song. The instrumental sections aren't really my thing and I feel there've been songs that were better showcases of her voice at previous topics. I still enjoy the song and some of the lyrics, but we're still a long way from Write My Voice.)

!Some lyrics that are good and painful, and I do like hearing YuNi again, but it's still a long way from being my favorite song of hers.

[Final Thoughts:

It cannot be erased
It cannot be healed
It has been burned into the depths of my heart

Lyrics are definitely the type of thing I'm looking for.]

Nominator: Snake [25/32 Remaining]

Initial Score: 58.12
Revised Score: 50.98
Final Score: 57.08 [Upgraded to 58,115[

(First Reaction: Feels like an end credits type of song. It starts off very slow and atmospheric, building up to... this retro-futurist type thing, like a 50's idea of the space-age, all silver and chrome and shiny. That is my review of the song: It is shiny.)

!The retro sci-fi feel towards the end of the track is still quite enjoyable, but the very slow build-up to it felt like a bit much for me tonight.

[Final Thoughts: A slow and dramatic journey to the stars. It's a bit longer and slower than I'd like, but it's a fun trip and I fairly enjoy listening to it when I'm in the mood for it (which I am right now).]

[Later: Let's move this back up where it came from.]

I'm really liking what I'm hearing of The Dear Hunter (clever name). Never heard of them before this. Not as heavy as the sort of stuff I usually listen to. Have any particular album you would recommend getting first?
I would definitely point you to one of the Act albums, specifically one of the first four. Act V (the one all the TDH songs in this particular ranking are coming from) is fantastic as well, but it's the only one that I think loses a little bit of impact if you're not familiar with and invested in the overarching story that the albums are telling (not to mention all the reprises and references). I'd also probably caution against Act I because it's noticeably more raw and unrefined compared to the rest of the band's catalogue. Still some great stuff on there but I don't think it's nearly as representative of what their sound would become. So that leaves the options with II, III, and IV.

Act II sounds like it'd be a decent option for you, because it's neck and neck with Act III as the heaviest offering but also, I think, considerably more proggy than III, which will probably be a good combo for someone who's nominated songs from Caligula's Horse and Devin Townsend. I'd call this one raw as well, but in a completely different way - Casey Crescenzo wrote the story of this one while dealing with some bitter feelings toward a breakup, and that's become a significant source of embarrassment for him in the years since. Fans love it for that, though, because there's a pervasive feeling of anger and pettiness that comes through in the vocals and composition that makes complete sense for where the story's main character is at this point in the narrative.

Act III itself is an interesting one because it's the only Act telling a story that could be largely self contained, where the main character is fighting in World War 1. I have extensive thoughts on some of the album's themes and how TDH does a war tale better than most any other fiction I've encountered, but this isn't the place for those sorts of musings. Suffice it to say that I think this is the album where Casey's creative vision for the Acts really started to shine through. Like Act II, this one has some of the band's heaviest offerings interspersed with some of its most beautiful soliloquies, just without that intentional feeling of childishness since the subject matter is much more mature. More notably, though, he's starting to throw in some more experimental pieces as well, with... Mixed results - Go Get Your Gun is one of the least popular TDH songs, for example (even as far as Casey himself is concerned), even though I still enjoy it for what it is.

Then we get to Act IV, which as Raetsel mentioned is very often recommended as an entry point. It was my first real exposure to the band - I listened to A Night on the Town after the album art popped up in a ranking on this very board, as a matter of fact, and the album came out very soon after. And obviously I loved it so much that now I'm making walls of text about the band myself. To this day, it's the most consistent thing they've put out, which is saying something because it's been a long time since they made a song I've actively disliked. The production has taken a huge step up, they've started throwing in lots of orchestral elements, and Casey's gotten to a point with his writing where he can just do whatever he wants and make it great. There's an honest-to-God disco tribute song on Act IV, and it rocks. Casey himself recommends this as an entry point to the band (or at least did at one point, and I have a personal suspicion this is still the album he's most proud of), so that's an extra point in its favor.

I'm gonna cut myself off now before I ramble even more; sorry for going so wild. Here's the TL;DR: I'd point you to either Act IV or Act II, but you can't go wrong with Act III either.

Hope that helps. And as you can see, I don't mind answering more questions on the band if you have any.

Running very far behind for reasons I don't wish to get into, but here's four songs to start with. Hopefully we'll get through 10:

============================

#548: Grimes, Janelle Monae - Venus Fly (3:45):
https://open.spotify.com/track/1QxbBB80IuPwhwW1ygGfPh?si=0af2f6de806747cf

Nominator: Player_0 [19/33 Remaining]

Initial Score: 24.00
Revised Score: 72.22
Final Score: 58.116

(First Reaction: The constant BOOM-BOOM-BOOMBOOMBOOM throughout everything except the intro is massively off-putting to me and I found this rather difficult to get through. The choruses are nice and I kinda like it when it gets to the violin & quiets down considerably, but then the song goes back to BOOMing almost immediately. I wouldn't say I hate it because there are some aspects to it that I like, but it's a real low point for the album.)

Well, I'm in a really good mood and love everything right now. I wonder if I should take the night off because this is really going to disrupt the scoring system if I leave it unchecked... but I suppose I'll push ahead for a bit anyway.

The only thing holding this song back at the moment are the booms. I'm still not a fan of them? I'm too... bouncy at the moment to really dislike anything, but I find them rather distracting and they keep me from focusing on all the parts that I enjoy. I love the part with the violins, even if it's far too brief.

*some things come up in real life, requiring a break from typing anything for an hour or so*

My fault for trying to do this during a busy week, I suppose. Either way, I can't recall enough of the song to make continuing this writeup a valid option, so I'm afraid we'll have to leave things here for the time being.

[Final Thoughts: Yeah, I'm back to bouncing off of this song fairly hard this afternoon... I think I'll keep it near the top of the "kinda like" tier because I know part of me REALLY likes this song, but I can't access that side of my personality right now....

I also feel like I should comment on Janelle appearing on the track because I really should listen to more of her work, but I don't have much reaction to her on this particular track.]

============================

-don't leave Chugs at home-

#547: POLICA - Wedding (3:26):
https://open.spotify.com/track/1YtCuGcJXut87bPrWNlUZL?si=fD_tPSANSkCn06r3e3LbXA

Nominator: Jesse Custer [24/29 Remaining]

Initial Score: 54.60
Revised Score: 58.20
Final Score: 58.20

(First Reaction: I could always use more anti-police brutality songs, but I'm not super into this one. It also falls into the trap of just repeating itself once it runs out of words.)

Honestly, I'm tempted to give this song infinity points because [REDACTED]. I can't quite convince myself to actually do so though... it's a great concept for a song and I'll always pop for songs with this type of message, but I'm not 100% sold on the music itself. In a way, it almost feels too pretty to act as a protest song? It's not tragic enough to properly highlight the travesties of justice, nor angry enough to feel especially cathartic, or even particularly well suited to play at a protest. I appreciate the sentiment, I love the sentiment, I want this to win for the bold statement it would make, but I feel this song doesn't have enough "bite" to it.

I will say I like her voice well enough and have no real complaints about the music itself (apart from it repeating one too many times at the end) and it is pretty, I just don't know that this track is the best way of delivering the message.

[Final Thoughts: Really tempted to move this up a tier for the statement it would make, but I suppose I'm honestly not *that* into the song itself... I mean, I do kinda like it and love the message, but it's not exactly a song I'm dying to hear on constant repeat or anything. It's still a damn fine nomination though.]

#546: Rayman - Oh no! [0:05]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GmV_0K10ro

Nominator: paulg [30/52 Remaining]

Initial Score: 54.11
Revised Score: 54.11
Final Score: 58.2069

(First Reaction: Funnier losing sound effect than The Price is Right horn, but still not something I'd want to give a bunch of points to.)

Not as iconic as The Price is Right's horn, but I'm still going to give "Oh no!" a slight edge in terms of scoring because I personally prefer it. Still, not an awful lot here to comment on and I haven't spent much time playing any of the Rayman series, so there's no nostalgia bonus or random stories I can fill time with.

[Final Thoughts: It's a funny sound effect, but there's still not much to say about it.]

===================

-is it irony to nominate a song named "Journey to the Past" when another version of Journey to the Past was nominated before making this a musical journey to past ranking topics??-

============================

#545: Christy Altomare - Journey to the Past (3:16):
https://open.spotify.com/track/1T0OMgJ1bSqlMDD8cWbvnL?si=dda7b5169e9d40d5

Nominator: CPU [17/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 52.01
Revised Score: 72.15
Final Score: 58.26

(First Reaction: There is no longer a video of a cute dog, 0/100.

...alright, fine, I'll try an actual writeup. It is interesting bringing a Broadway version of a song from last year (or was it two years ago? I didn't have a sense of time to begin with and it's only getting worse lately), but I think I like the film version better? Or perhaps I'm still biased because the film version had a dog & the advantage of being the first version of the song I heard, leaving this as a canine-less retread.

......alright, fine, I'll try to stop being overly harsh. It's a fine performance and I can't complain about her singing, and the lyrics are as good as they ever were; it just doesn't do a lot to really stand out as a unique experience compared to the original and there's nothing to distract me from the feeling that I've already been here. It's good, just not something I'm really looking for at the moment.)

Going back and directly comparing the two versions of the song, I think this one probably is better in retrospect. At least, the audio is much clearer and crisp, which could just be creating the illusion of Christy Altomare being a stronger singer than Liz Callaway... but even if that were true (and I'm not saying it is), this *sounds* better which is all that actually matters.

Lyrics are simple, but effective. I can be pretty easily manipulated by thoughts of love and family, so it doesn't really take much for a song like this to occasionally hit me pretty hard (depending on current emotional state). I like this song a fair amount; it's still not really new, but it is a worthwhile take on an old song with its own charms.

[Final Thoughts: I'm not quite in hte mood for this type of happiness and optimism about finding a home & family right now... it's definitely a track that can hit hard when I'm in the right mood for it, but now's not quite the right time for this song.[
